Mr and Mrs Laxmi Kulkarni drag 3 year old Chetan to New Model School for admissions.
The school interviews the parents and has an amiable chat with Pappu. The school decides that Pappu is eligible for admission. Then starts the bargaining. Other than the fees, the school expects a non refundable donation of Rs. 1 lac. The parents negotiate this to Rs. 75,000. This neighbourhood in Pune apparently has quite a bit of Western influence mainly due to the large number of Western tourists attracted here by the (in)famous Osho Meditation Resort. When my coworker PB from Toronto asked if I’ve been there yet, I could only shake my head in ignorance. Then he proceeded to tell me that this is a fancy ashram of a guru whose’s theory of sex leading to spiritual enlightening is quite controversial. More on this on another day. Read more »

Arrived in Mumbai
I started my journey in Toronto’s Pearson Airport terminal 3 yesterday. As prescripted by the doctor, I had a light meal of milk and Dijon chicken sandwich at Brioche Dorée to go with my Malarone before my flight. Brioche Dorée is a popular franchise in France but I didn’t know that we have one in Toronto. The Malarone is STRONG! I was quickly put into a delicious stupor that kept me asleep for the duration of most of the flight. Read more »

Is it brain drain when the best in this country leave for a foreign country?
Or is it ‘that’ when they either stay back or go abroad and do not utilize their intellectual resources?
Let’s debate.
