Nothing’s changed. The below article was written in July 2006.
We’re in Dec 2008 now and nothing’s really changed.
We’ve had nearly 200 people killed and around 400 injured. Add loss of property as well.
What we need to do:
1. After the Mumbai blasts in 93, Tiger Memom quickly moved to the Middle East. The Saudis and the other emirates were more than willing to offer him protection.
Dawood Ibrahim has been in Pakistan for sometime now. His daughter is married to Miandad’s son. There’s no way that he would have missed his own daughter’s marriage .. either in Dubai or Pakistan.
India need to go in and take out people like Dawood, if the countries there are in are not going to surrender them. India needs to take action now and also intensify the political pressure on Pakistan. Press the US to cut all aid .. since most of the aid is getting into training terrorists.
India should also get the facts out on this particular situation and place the evidence of Pakistan’s involvement before the global community.
It’s a known fact that the Pakistani govt has little control over the army and the terrorist network.
The ISI and the army are the agencies in Pakistan that need to be dealt with. Also the India agencies need to ensure that we have no trouble coming in from our other neighbors.
Bottomline: Get into Pakistan and Bangladesh and finish of the terror camps.
2. Intensify border patrol. Ensure that illegal immigrants cannot enter in – either through Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal China, Bhutan or Burma.
3. Ensure that Indian police and military personnel are paid better and better equipped.
As citizens we interact more with the police than the military. The police are paid poorly, live in poverty, are over-worked and have obsolete equipment. The men in brown need to be paid better, trained better, and get the latest equipment to deal with such situations.
All police officers who are physically unfit (90% of the force) should be forced to get into shape.
4. The Mumbai terror situation should be better handled. The media was all over the place right next to the Taj. At Nariman House, the people had filled the streets, when the operation was underway.
Commandos, army officers and the police were giving the media regular updates.
Why have a media circus? Keep the media as far away from the situation as possible. Cordon off the people.
5. Outsiders. Yes the terrorists were outsiders. Where were the MNS and Raj Thackeray when these outsiders needed to be removed? We need some serious politicians not some buffoons.
As citizens, there is little we can do. The intelligence and the other agencies need to do the work that they are being paid to do. As citizens we expect these people to do their job and ensure that our life and property is not at risk !! Selfish maybe .. but if these folks cannot do their job why have them on payroll? Before the readers reach out to pelt stones at my phantom, I would make four reasonable statements:
1. I am not a sadist who feels happy that the millions of dollars which people invested in the stock market have vanished into thin air. But I do strongly believe that the millions that we think that the markets have lost were never there in the first place! I always feel happy if what is an illogical phenomena comes to a logical end. To me the ever upward movement of stocks was illogical and bizarre and hence its abrupt end makes me happy. Read more »

Since Pepsi and Coke are now being banned in most states and also in schools and offices, the soft drink companies have started selling the colas to farmers. Farmers are using these colas as pesticides and spraying them indiscriminately in their fields, causing greater concern for environmentalists. Over indulgent mothers are now worried that children will start eating more vegetables and consume coke clandestinely through natural means. Read more »

The slaying of Benazir comes across as a major blow to the millions of people in the sub-continent who have grown sentimentally attached to the four most charismatic and illustrious families in South Asia. The Nehru-Gandhi family, the Bhutto family, the Sheikh Muzib-ur-Rehman and the Kumaratunga- Bhandaranaike family are there, right in the Top bracket, when there is any mention of the political elite of this part of the world. All members of these families were feted and felicitated when alive and mourned collectively by the nation when any of its members met a violent death.
These families have been eulogized in their countries so much that they have become synonymous with their countries to the outside world. Read more »

Didn’t you see my right foot?! In the middle of an argument over a minor accident the rickshaw driver claimed he had poked his right foot out to indicate that he was turning right. Pune has around 60-70 thousand three wheeler rickshaws. They are no doubt a very convenient form of taxi service. To many harried customers, rickshaw drivers are rude and indisciplined, but I don’t really find their behavior on the road to be any different than that of private vehicle owners. This is a country where everyone owns a piece of the road, so rules be damned. Read more »

New Delhi, Asian Games 1982. I have memories of broad, clean avenues and clean air. When I returned after a long gap in 1999, New Delhi was urban hell. My friend pointed out a particularly busy intersection and said, “that’s the most polluted intersection in Asia”. I went back in 2004, and something strange had happened. Something we Indians are not used to. Pollution had reduced dramatically. Air quality was better. The reason experts tell us, was the conversion of almost the entire public transport fleet (15-20 thousand vehicles by various estimates) of rickshaws, taxis and buses from diesel to CNG (Edit: Compressed Natural Gas). Dear Karunanidhi-ji,
I am not a Hindu hardliner, but I am a believer in the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Just like the Christians believe in the concept of “The father, Son and the Holy ghost”, my faith in the trinity of Indian Gods is unshakeable.
I believe that lord Ram was born in Ayodhya, just as followers of other faith believe that their Gods were born in other Holy lands. Read more »

Just got back from seeing Chak De India. And came back with many memories…
My family has always been into sports. I’ve grown up seeing four of my mamas (mother’s brothers) play Table Tennis, of which two played for India. I remember going to the Gymkhana just to see my fave ‘mama’ in action. He was the youngest Junior National Champion during his time…only 13-14 then. And went on to be the National Champion in the Men’s league many years later. He then represented the country in at least 5 World Championships and other international events. He used to play in a very particular style…he would lose the first round and then aggressively zoom and clinch the next two rounds so easily that the opponent never had time to realize what came into this cool, calm player. I used to watch him observe his opponent’s every move with total concentration in that first round. Absolutely cool, nothing would faze him; nothing would break his concentration from his opponent.
