Indian Express : TWO years ago, the University of Pune held a special function to present Pramod Mahajan a certificate for a journalism course he had done several years ago. When the BJP leader stood up to speak, he could not hide his fondness for Pune. ‘‘As a student I was very shy and would work hard to excel in every field. Even then I aspired to become a politician and I made journalism my launch pad,’’ he said.
In fact, because Mahajan’s ties with Pune were so strong, he accompanied BJP president L K Advani during his Bharat Suraksha Yatra tour of the city two weeks ago. On earlier occasions, his moorings to the city brought him here to campaign for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls and he addressed six public meetings.
A BJP leader close to Mahajan said, ‘‘His association with the city began in ’72 after he graduated from Marathwada University and came to Pune to study journalism. Later, Mahajan worked as a sub-editor in the Pune edition of Tarun Bharat, a Marathi daily with close ties to the Sangh Parivar, in which he wrote a political column.’’
