Credit societies’ staff to get lessons in operations

Indian Express FOR more than 2.18 crore people in the State, Cooperative Credit Societies (CCS) are the only hope when it comes to availing credit. But thanks to their disorganised way of functioning and lack of proper training among its staff, only 21,000 of the 28,000 CCS in Maharashtra continue to function today. However, things might change as the process of setting up a training institute for CCS’ employees in Pune gathers steam.

The proposal for the institute got a boost on Saturday as Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh announced the grant of 10 acres for the training institute at the inauguration ceremony of the national convention of credit cooperative societies at Pune.

Verma and Saxena are not the only ones. There are Jasjeet Singh Chaddha, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and Jaideep Jain, a student of NIT Surat, who were invited by SEDT to present their ideas at Yashada on Saturday morning, with Ashutosh Gowariker and Arun Firodia for audience.

The presentation by Verma and Saxena — about the use of bio energy as a means of empowering rural India — was well received by the panel of dignitaries.

They landed in India to test the project and have been working closely with the Planning Commission and the State governments of Uttaranchal, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Indian Express :  She sat patiently clutching the medallion that proclaimed her ‘woman exemplar’ status. Awarded by none other than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, at the CII awards function in New Delhi, Sangeeta Pardhe cannot hold back her tears.

It was seven years ago when this outstanding contributor was selected as a community worker when the NGO—Institute of Health Management (IHM)— started a health programme to survey 27 slums.

Working zealously since 1998, Sangeeta has been instrumental in the eradication of malnutrition in children under three years of age. She helped people come out of their inhibitions and took several patients to the main public hospitals in Pune and also initiated a self-help group in the locality.

Indian Express : ADAMALI Mujawar, an art teacher from a small village of Arag in Miraj taluka of Sangli district, has made waves by taking the traditional Indian art form of rangoli to the world.
On Tuesday, April 18, he finished a grand creation at Sangli’s sports club complex. The huge rangoli, measuring 131.2 ft in length and 82 ft in width (over an area of 10,762 square feet) depicted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stepping down the stairs of Rajgad fort. “I want to use rangoli as a medium to bring about social change by spreading messages on secularism, justice and truthful behaviour, that were practised by Shivaji Maharaj.”

Mujawar commenced his work at 11.30 am on April 12 and finished it in 144 hours (six hours prior to the stipulated 150 hrs) on April 18, at 11.39 am.

Mujawar, who has displayed his skills in Sangli, Satara, Pune, Kolhapur and Jalgaon, earned his first Guinness record on July 25, 2003.

SHGs to get loans at 8 per cent interest

Indian Express : PUNE’S guardian minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday announced that self help groups (SHGs) would be provided loans at 8 per cent interest rate, while for women from families below poverty line, the rate would be 7 per cent.

He said there was a proposal to reduce the rate to 6 per cent as done for farmers. The SHGs would also get quicker access to loans from district co-operative credit banks for loans up to Rs 50,000.

A life insurance policy of Rs 2.3 crore for women in the unorganised sector has been announced by the State. A pension scheme for anganwadi workers has been initiated, along with an announcement of 12,800 new anganwadis.

Patil announced that a Rs 150-crore project for protecting destitute women, Tejaswini, would be taken up.
