“A street hawker came in to sell us pots,”says Akula, 37, one of the two Indians to be included last week in Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world.
“She was dressed in a torn saree and she had a son, a boy of my age, who was also dressed in rags,”adds the Hyderabad-born and NY-raised Akula. “As children tend to do, we made eye contact and got connected.”
His aunt bought a few pots from the woman and paid her in the form of rice. “I distinctly remember this woman dropping a few grains of rice on the floor and kneeling down to press her finger into each and every grain and pick up those single grains one-by-one.
It was then that I realised what poverty was.
