INDIAN EXPRESS  WITH the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) receiving the first tranche of funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JN-NURM) for the Rs 97.95-crore sewage and drainage project, the civic body has embarked on a ‘clean city’ mission.

Pune has submitted a Rs 8,500-odd crore project to fix its crumbling infrastructure and the first installment would be utilised for treating sewage and keeping the river pollution in check. The phase I of the project that includes setting up of five sewage treatment plants, two pumping stations and two main lines across the city is expected to be completed by 2007. ‘‘Presently, the PMC can treat only 54 per cent of the total sewage generated in the city. However, with the completion of phase I of the project, we will be able to treat the entire sewage,’’ development engineer (sewage project) P S Nirbhavane said.

INDIAN EXPRESS MUNICIPAL Commissioner Nitin Kareer has submitted a proposal to the civic Standing Committee for construction of public toilets on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis.
