CNN Google Inc. has no plans to build its own Web browser software to compete with rival Microsoft Corp., Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said on Wednesday.During a conference call with Wall Street analysts, Schmidt dismissed speculation that the company aimed to tie together its Web search and other services to compete with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, the world’s dominant Web browser.
“It looks like people have some good browser choices already,” Schmidt said. “We would not build a browser for the fun of building a browser,” he added.
Google encourages its customers to use a variety of alternatives to Internet Explorer, particularly the open-source Firefox browser.

news.scotsman THE Arctic was once a balmy subtropical paradise with palm trees, alligators and an average temperature of 74F, scientists revealed yesterday.
Core samples dug from deep beneath the Arctic Ocean floor have shown that an area near the North Pole was much warmer 55 million years ago than first thought.
The research has also given scientists the idea that a simple fern may have helped prevent the Earth from turning into a blazing hothouse and allowed it to develop into the more habitable environment found on most of the planet today.
The plant formed in massive quantities in the Arctic, sucking up huge amounts of carbon dioxide, causing the tropical temperature there to drop.
The dramatic cooling altered wind patterns, ocean currents and land and ocean temperatures, and had a major impact on plant and animal life.

itwire We recently saw a rumour about Microsoft buying Yahoo, started by a conjecture piece in The Wall Street Journal, get quashed by Yahoo. Now a similar rumour about Microsoft buying eBay is doing the rounds as a result of a New York Post article. However, those who may be excited by the prospect are likely to be disappointed. Microsoft probably has enough money in the bank to pay the US$50-60 billion or so to take eBay off the board, without even throwing its shares into the deal. However, there are too many obstacles in the road at present for the deal to happen.
One of those obstacles is Yahoo. It is no secret that the rumours about the Microsoft and Yahoo merger emanated from the fact that Microsoft was interested in Yahoo’s search business, which is bigger than Microsoft’s search business and a major competitor. However, a major part of Yahoo’s business is online content. Microsoft reportedly isn’t interested in owning a content company and Yahoo isn’t interested in selling just its search business.

news.com Apple Computer will now accept old computers–Macs or PCs–for recycling from anyone who purchases a new Mac from one of the company’s retail stores or via its Web site.
The company previously maintained a recycling drop-off in its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, where people could leave their old computer equipment.
Computer recycling has become a hot topic within the tech industry as the amount of electronic waste continues to grow and damage the environment.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has been criticized at shareholder meetings for the company’s environmental record.
As part of the new program, which began Wednesday, Mac purchasers will receive an e-mail with instructions and a label for free shipping and recycling. The old computers will be recycled within the United States, Apple said, and no hazardous materials will be shipped overseas.

Indian Express THE State government has increased the budgetary provision for control of animal diseases to Rs 30 crore this year and has launched a massive drive towards pre-monsoon vaccination of animals. Animal husbandry commissioner Bijay Kumar said there have been outbreaks of several diseases that infect cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats. In fact, last year over 10,000 goats and sheep died in Satara, Ahmednagar, Baramati and Pune. Instead of treatment after the infection, the government has decided to prevent these outbreaks by vaccinating the animals. At least 50-60 lakh animals will be vaccinated, Kumar said.
The vaccination programme will be completed by June 15 though in Pune.
