Say cheers! Hotels are kicking off eat-drink-sleep football festival today

INDIAN EXPRESS FROM Friday, Ronaldinho, Zidane and Beckham will be up, close and personal at several city hotels getting ready to ride the FIFA wave. If some will roll down their big screens, others will revamp their menus and dedicate their cocktails to the gods of football.

Check this. Hotel Le Meridien has planned a live telecast in the evening at their Entresol Bar where guests can catch the action on two wide screen plasma televisions. “We will have a sizzler festival alongside to give our guests the perfect combination of a good match and great food,” says restaurant manager Vishi Oberoi.

Also, hotels will screen the really late-night matches (the action starts only at 9.30 pm IST) even though it is much beyond the closing time of the restaurants and bars. Taj Blue Diamond will screen all the late night matches in its bar Casabella, though they won’t be serving liquor beyond the deadline.

Undergraduate survey: iPods more popular than beer

MERCURY NEWS  In a rare instance, Apple Computer Inc.’s iconic iPod music player surpassed beer drinking as the most “in” thing among undergraduate college students, according to the latest biannual market research study by Ridgewood, N.J.-based Student Monitor.

Nearly three quarters, or 73 percent, of 1,200 students surveyed said iPods were “in” - more than any other item in a list that also included text messaging, bar hopping and downloading music. In the year-ago study, only 59 percent of students named the iPod as “in,” putting the gadget well below alcohol-related activities.

This year, drinking beer and Facebook.com, a social networking Web site, were tied for second most popular, with 71 percent of the students identifying them as being “in.”

Kalam breaks sound barrier in SU-30 fighter

INDIA NEWS  Declaring a 50-year-old dream had been fulfilled, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Thursday became the first supreme commander of India’s armed forces - and the country’s oldest citizen - to fly in an Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi SU-30 MKI, with the combat jet going supersonic during the half-hour sortie.

‘It was a long-cherished dream fulfilled and I felt on top of the world’, a beaming and emotional Kalam, clad in blue pressure suit, told reporters on touching down at the IAF’s Lohegaon airbase here.

The IAF had in 1958 rejected Kalam’s application to become a pilot. He went on to become India’s ‘missile man’, scientific advisor to the defence minister and finally the president.

During the flight, the aircraft had flown between 15,000 and 25,000 feet and broke the sound barrier at speeds of Mach 1.25.
