IndianExpress: Alarm bells rang at Dr Ambedkar Hospital in Dehu Road when over 200 patients were admitted for treatment of fever and cold in the second week of June. Fearing that the cases of fever were similar to the symptoms of chickungunya, the hospital has sent the samples to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.
District malaria officer Dr Salil Patil has appealed to the people not to panic as the number of cases have declined. He averred that the symptoms were similar to that of chickungunya and other tests have ruled out the possibility of dengue or malaria.
“We found that the patients were complaining of cold, fever with acute joint pains which are the general symptoms of chickungunya,’’ he explained, adding that similar complaints were reported from the patients of Indapur taluka when there was an outbreak.

IndianExpress: After a 16-day haitus, the monsoon, which had arrived early this year, has once again revived and the West Coast — including Konkan, Mumbai, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra that comprises Pune — is likely to get enhanced rainfall.
The India Meteorology Department officials said the prediction for enhanced rainfall depended on the formation of a low pressure in the North-West and adjoining West-Central Bay of Bengal.
The mathematical model shows us that there will be a formation of low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and if it comes true, the West Coast will have enhanced rainfall activity,’’ India Meteorological Department director (Weather Forecasting) R R Lele said. The model suggests formation of the low pressure area around June 29 and 30.
