Coming soon: A diploma in chess for wannabe GMs

IndianExpress: After Pune was chosen as the venue for the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, here is another feather that will raise its status as a sports city. Come August-end, and the city will have a full-fledged diploma course in chess. In a first-of-its-kind move, the Symbiosis University has launched the three-year diploma for students who have passed Standard X who, for a change, will not be missing college lectures or bunking them to learn the game.

Here, students can learn how to make the moves from reputed chess players and all that one needs is the inclination and the willingness to learn.

The diploma, which has been endorsed by the Maharashtra Chess Association, according to Thigale, would help players continue with the game despite adverse results in tournaments. Moreover, the expertise will be provided by the Poona District Chess Association (PDCA

Interactive session on aesthetic surgery at AFMC today

IndianExpress: Command Hospital (CH) (Southern Command), Pune is organising an interactive session on aesthetic surgery today which is open to the general public, as part of a two-day national Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery.

Aimed at removing the misconceptions and doubts about the surgical procedures available for cosmetic improvements, the session to be chaired by Farida Kapur will provide a forum for the public to seek information and get their queries solved by the experts in the field. The session will begin at 11 am on Sunday at Bharadwaja auditorium, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC).

No hawker zones on 30 roads

IndianExpress: In a major policy decision taken by the Pune Municipal Corporation 30 roads across the city have been declared as no-hawker zones.

The decision has been under consideration from many years. The policy will be implemented from September 1. The move is expected to affect around 48,000 authorised and unauthorised hawkers in the city.

 Earlier, the civic administration had attempted to declare 12 roads and 22 chowks as no-hawker zones. However, the project failed as the hawkers organisations had moved the court against the decision.

Wet Sunday

IndianExpress: It will be a wet Sunday for Puneites as the Met Department has forecast more rain for the city. After a two-day lull, Pune received 5.4 mm of rain till Saturday afternoon.

‘‘The city will receive frequent spells of rain with one or 2 heavy spells on Sunday,’’ said a Met official. Konkan and Goa, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha will receive widespread rains with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, the deep depression over south Chhattisgarh and Orissa moved northwestwards and weakened into a depression and lies near Nagpur.

Zero garbage project gets under way

IndianExpress: The ‘zero garbage project’ for 74 colleges under the Pune University, began on Saturday. Besides being provided with training on garbage segregation, the students were given information on garbage management and control, vermi-composting and garbage segregation by the officers from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

A team of civic members, including Dr R R Pardeshi, corporator Vandana Chavan, Dr Snehal Padale, Ravi Chowdhary, Manjushi Talwalkar explained the concept of garbage segregation and its management to the students.

 A large scale cleanliness drive will also be undertaken from August 14-15. After undergoing the training, the students will implement vermi-composting and garbage segregation in their college and university premises.
