Device to turn MP3 player into digital radio

CNet.com: BBC is planning to unveil a gadget that turns an MP3 player into a DAB (digital audio broadcasting) radio.

The device, which is being developed by BBC’s Radio & Music Interactive, will be a clip-on that plugs onto an MP3 player and enables it with digital radio capabilities. According to an article in Stuff Magazine, a BBC representative described a user-friendly experience in which the device will work with a number of different players and won’t be restricted to BBC stations.

The BBC hopes to release the product in time for the holiday-shopping season.

Google Launches New Blogger Beta

BetaNews: Google on Monday took the wraps off a new version of its Blogger service, which adds a number of new features in an attempt to catch up to its rivals. On the list of additions are categorizing posts with labels, controlling who can read a blog, and modifying the design without editing HTML.

While it’s in beta, only a limited number of Blogger users are being offered the ability to migrate their blog to the new service, although those interested can create a new account on the beta. Google hasn’t said when it plans to officially launch the new version, but notes that it will be tied to the company’s Google Accounts system.

AMD Unveils Improved Opteron Processors

TechNewsWorld: Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD)  rolled out new and improved versions of its dual-core Opteron server processors this week, touting better power efficiency and virtualization capabilities.

AMD said its new Rev F chips will carry it through to the end of the year, when it plans to make the transition to quad-core processors. Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) , IBM (NYSE: IBM)  and Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW)  are among a list of vendors that have announced plans to sell servers equipped with the chips.

Trolltech Launches Reprogrammable Mobile Linux Phone

TechNewsWorld: In a move to make mobile Linux applications easier to build, Trolltech on Tuesday launched a reprogrammable phone based on the Linux operating system .

The Qtopia Greenphone lets developers and handset manufacturers create, modify and test Linux-based mobile phone applications on a working GSM/GPRS device.
 
Greenphone is a functioning mobile camera phone that offers developers the ability to reprogram the device’s applications. It is the first in a series of open mobile devices the company plans to make available in cooperation with its partners.

“Developers can create applications to suit the evolving needs of carriers and end users with a dramatically reduced development cycle,” said Eirik Chambe-Eng, co-CEO, Trolltech.
