High drama in PMC, Kareer locked in his room for 2 hrs

IndianExpress: FOR nearly two hours on Thursday, municipal commissioner Nitin Kareer was gheraoed in his office that was locked from inside by the members of Raj Thackeray’s newly-formed Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. The MNS members were protesting against the Pune Municipal Corporation’s inability to improve the city’s road condition and demanded Kareer should dissolve the civic body.

The incident occurred at around 12.30 pm when Kareer was having discussions regarding garbage disposal with a delegation of Arogya Sena. The MNS workers led by former MLA Deepak Paigude, who had reached his office, demanded he discuss the road condition with them.

Residents lock up Bibvewadi ward officers over water supply

IndianExpress:  WHILE the Municipal Commissioner was locked in his cabin by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena at Shivajinagar, the Bharatiya Janata Party at Bibvewadi locked the civic officers in the Bibvewadi ward office.

Frustrated by the shortage of water over the past few months residents of Bibvewadi locked the Bibvewadi ward office on Thursday for six hours.

Demanding action over water supply, around 300 residents from Upper Indira Nagar, Super Indira Nagar, Ota scheme and Mahesh Society led by corporator Gopal Chintal barged into the Bibvewadi ward office and locked the office from outside at 10.20 am.

Demand for alternative dumping site

IndianExpress: AGITATED over the foul smell and menace due to dumping of city’s garbage at Uruli Devachi, the Aarogya Sena met Municipal Commissioner Nitin Kareer demanding an alternative dumping site.

Kareer said that the Pune Municipal Corporation had already begun the work of scientific disposal at Uruli Devachi under the Airfield project. However, he added that for long-term disposal of garbage, new sites would be needed. ‘‘If the State government provides us with alternate land, the PMC would immediately acquire the land,’’ he assured.

Repair Market Yard Rd

IndianExpress: DEMANDING urgent repairs on Market Yard Road, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday held a rasta roko agitation from Market Yard post office to the bus stop for one hour. Corporator Shrinath Bhimale said that while the Pune Municipal Corporation has made a budgetary allocation of Rs 3 crore, the repair work is being delayed.

Bhimale added that the Market Yard Road is widely used by people from Kondhwa, Lullanagar, Bibvewadi to go to Camp area. ‘‘But due to the bad condition of the road, a number of accidents take place daily, making it difficult to commute for travellers,’’ he said.

Fire at Tata Motors car plant

IndianExpress: A fire broke out at the paint shop of Tata Motors’ car plant here in the wee hours of Thursday. There has been no casualty reported from the fire and company officials said the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage was still being ascertained.

‘‘The fire has been completely brought under control. Daily 750 cars pass through the paint shop at the car plant and we are working out alternative arrangements to minimise the impact,’’ a Tata Motors’ official said.

3D TV ‘could be three years away’

BBCNews: 3D television could be in homes within three years, according to a European research consortium.
Levent Onural, co-ordinator of the multinational 3DTV network, said the technology was already in place for 3D TV and cinema to become commonplace.

Apple Announces Posse of Products

IndianExpress: Apple Computer has announced a posse of products, including the re-designed iPod nano; the new iPod with a brighter 2.5-inch color display; the new iPod shuffle nearly half the size of its predecessor; and the all new 24-inch iMac.

The company has also announced that its complete iMac line, including the newest 24-inch model, will now feature the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors that deliver up to 50 percent faster performance than earlier standards

World’s First Blu-ray Disc Recorders

IndianExpress: Panasonic has unveiled the world’s first Blu-ray Disc (BD) recorders that can play back BD-Video discs.

The two Blu-ray recorders, “DIGA DMR-BW200″ and “DIGA DMR-BR100″ can record high-definition imagery on BD-RE rewritable discs, and dub from the built-in hard-disk drive (HDD) to BD discs at 4x speed, without compromising video or audio quality.

Intel Multi Core University Program

Digital TV to ‘hit 500m by 2011′

BBCNews: More than 500 million homes around the world will have digital TV by 2011, according to a report.
Informa’s Global Digital TV report estimates that 40 million more homes will get digital TV by the end of 2006 with a further 46m in 2007.

“Digital growth will accelerate as the decade progresses, especially outside North America and western Europe,” said Informa’s Adam Thomas.
