IndianExpress: BARELY 12 km from Pune, at Matalwadi in Bhugaon village, is a one-teacher school with a difference. Recognised by the Zilla Parishad, it was set up two years ago to teach 54 children orphaned and living with HIV after other schools in Bhugaon and Pirangut refused them admission as villagers feared their own children would be infected.
Even though a legislation to end discrimination against people living with HIV is on cards according to Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, Manavya (humanity in Marathi), a private NGO that plays home to the 54 HIV orphans, had no option but to start an exclusive school to cater to these children

IndianExpress: MAYOR Rajani Tribhuvan, who has been repeatedly expressing satisfaction about the civic administration’s effort to fill potholes, got furious when women corporators from Opposition parties gifted her a pair of spectacles to see the road conditions clearly on Thursday. Angered, she snapped, ‘‘I don’t need the spectacles to see.’’
The protest was staged by corporators Ushatai Kelkar, Hirabai Pawar and Sugandha Kurlekar. A fuming Tribhuvan refused to accept the gift and said that political parties should not protest in such a way just because elections are coming close.

IndianExpress: PUNE’s tryst with the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JN-NURM) project continued with the Centre approving Rs 365.19 crore for its slum rehabilitation. While Pimpri-Chinchwad will get Rs 225.19 crore, Pune’s share will be Rs 140 crore.
Earlier, the Centre had approved Rs 99 crore under the first phase of slum rehabilitation project to be implemented at Hadapsar for constructing 6,000 houses. With the approval of the second phase of the project, Pune is the only city in the country where the slum rehabilitation project has been sanctioned.

IndianExpress: AN irate mob attacked the Ghorpadi Bazar police chowki on Thursday morning following a dispute between two groups over use of loudspeakers. Six people including one policeman suffered minor injuries when the mob stoned the police chowki. Senior police officials on Thursday afternoon said the situation was ‘‘tense, but under control.’’ The police have registered an offence against 13 people.
The injured were discharged after first aid at Sassoon Hospital. A case of rioting has been filed at Wanavdi police station. No arrests have been made so far.

IndianExpress: HE Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the crime branch of the city police on Thursday registered an offence against Indian Institute of Management Training (IIMT), Bhosari for duping 29 of its students to the tune of Rs 67.83 lakh.
The institute had allegedly declared that they would be provided a degree by a Rajasthan-based Institute, instead of the University of Pune which they had been promised at the time of admission.

TechNewsWorld: In a partnership with Sony Ericsson, Fossil on Thursday announced a new line of timepieces that will show who’s calling on your cell phone. The system uses the Bluetooth wireless standard to beam caller ID information from select cell phones made by Sony Ericsson to a tiny display on the watch face
Watches have always done a good job of quickly showing the time and date. However, Fossil (Nasdaq: FOSL) is convinced there’s another piece of information worth displaying on the wrist: caller ID.

TechTree: IBM and Intel Corp, with support from several technology majors, have developed a proposal codenamed “Geneseo” to enhance PCI Express technology to address performance requirements of new usage models, including visualization and extensible markup language (XML).
“Geneseo” outlines enhancements to facilitate faster connectivity between the computer’s brain, namely the processor, and application accelerators, as well as to improve the range of design options available to hardware developers.

TechNewsworld: Time-shifting device maker Sling Media on Thursday launched three new versions of its Slingbox remote TV appliances. The new models boast speeds up to 400 percent faster than earlier versions, with support for high-definition TV as well as a variety of other TV setups.
Sling Media peddles consumer electronics that allow consumers to watch television shows any time, via a concept called “time-shifting,” much like industry leader TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO) . With its new devices, Sling Media takes things one step further by making a way for viewers to place-shift as well. Slingbox owners can view content from any location through laptops, desktop PCs, PDAs and smartphones using an Internet connection.
