IndianExpress: THE city saw its first case of dengue-related death this year when 22-year-old Nitesh Devendra from Mangalwar Peth died of dengue haemorrhagic fever in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Incidentally, an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) student too succumbed to dengue in New Delhi on September 30.

IndianExpress: THE Bombay High Court’s order requiring Pune’s two taxi associations to operate from a single stand has been made functional. Taxis heading for Mumbai from the Pune railway station will be leaving from a single stand, abiding by the High Court’s and Regional Transport Authority’s (RTA) order.
Under the current system as ordered by the High Court, the taxis will leave from a single stand opposite Pune ST stand in a ratio of 2:1. After every two taxis of Mumbai-Pune taxi service, one taxi of Pune-Mumbai taxi service will leave for Mumbai. Traffic policemen have been deputed at the location for noting down the number of the taxi, its departure time and the name of the association.

IndianExpress: THE land commissioned for the international airport at Chakan should now be developed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for biotechnology, MP Suresh Kalmadi said on Sunday, addressing a press conference to announce the national conference on ‘Hi-tech Pune-Maharashtra 2006’ to be held on October 27 and 28.
Kalmadi said he had already submitted a proposal to the State and the MIDC, and expected a decision within a month. ‘‘The land at Chakan is available for development and should be used for IT-BT purposes,’’ he said

IndianExpress: ONCE more, school textbooks are in the spotlight for the wrong reasons: This time it is gender bias.
The issue was raised by the Maharshi Karve Shikshan Sanstha Women’s Study & Research Centre after a detailed study of 51 Marathi medium textbooks of Std I to VII. The study revealed the low representation of women in various aspects including illustrations, content and even the actual production of the books.

IndianExpress: TWO women and their sons from Kothrud were killed in a car accident near Warwangaon on Solapur Road, some 50 km from Pune on Sunday morning. The deceased were identified as Sagar Sitaram Tatkare (12), his mother Sandhya (32), Nikhilesh Ashok Satav (18) and his mother Ranjana Satav (42).
Both the families were neighbours and residents of Kumbre Park in Kothrud. The four had gone to Kurkumbh on a religious tour when the Tata Indigo they were travelling in skid while overtaking another vehicle at about 10 am on Sunday.

IndianExpress: POLICE constable Santosh Lakshman Khamkar (30) took his colleague Pratapsinh Nigde’s service rifle and shot himself dead inside the Bharati Vidyapeeth police chowki around 7 am on Sunday.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The cause behind Khamkar’s suicide is not known, the police said. Senior police officials rushed to chowki on Sunday morning.

News.com: Yahoo is set to allow outsiders to create new services using the world’s most popular consumer e-mail program, in the broadest move the Web has yet seen to enlist independent programmers to build a company’s products for it.
Officials of the world’s largest Internet media company said on Friday it planned to give away the underlying code to Yahoo Mail, one of the crown jewels of its business, in a bid to encourage software developers to build new applications based on e-mail.
