Taxmen come calling

IndianExpress:  Pune Municipal Corporation on Tuesday began taking action on tax evaders in the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee at Gultekdi Market Yard. The civic administration recovered pending dues of over Rs 10 lakhs. Attachment warrants were also served to 22 property/stall owners. However, the squad comprising assessor and collector of tax, two tax inspectors and two clerks had a tough time explaining the need for the action.

Rift widens: NCP says it can contest elections alone

IndianExpress: Hitting out at the Congress party, which has been at the receiving end of a lot of flak recently for bad roads, the Nationalist Congress Party on Tuesday assured the public that the roads will be in much better condition if it is elected in the forthcoming civic elections.

After citizen’s ire on bad roads rose to soaring heights, the Congress leaders had blamed the civic administration for the same. Mayor Rajni Tribhuvan had even threatened to resign from her post if the potholes were not filled in four days before Ganeshotsav.

Book fair in city from November 1

IndianExpress: The Pune Book Fair, to be held at the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch, Swargate, from November 1 will, for the first time, have a separate division for literature from Iran.

The five-day fair will exhibit books from over 100 publishers and distributors and cover various subjects like information technology, health, management, business, law, religion, politics and literature.

Fever survey in Mangalwar Peth

IndianExpress: THE civic health authorities have been directed to conduct an entomological and ‘fever’ survey in Mangalwar Peth following the death of 22-year-old Nitesh Devendra due to dengue haemorrhagic fever.

Joint director of health services, Maharashtra, Dr D S Dakhure, said directions were given to Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) health authorities to fumigate and spray the infected areas. ‘‘The department has asked for a report from the PMC regarding the number of fever cases,’’ Dakhure said.

TechTree: Logitech has unveiled its diNovo Edge keyboard, a blend of refined design and breakthrough innovation.

The comfortable new keyboard comes with a high-gloss finish; and is laser cut from a single, semi-translucent piece of black Plexiglas, and set into a brushed-aluminum frame.

HP unveils printing technology for high-end office market

news.com: Hewlett-Packard’s newest ink-based printing technology, HP Edgeline, will be built into printers geared toward the high-end office market, the company announced Tuesday. The technology was first introduced last spring in in-store retail photo-printing kiosks.

“It’s ink-based printing for huge-volume workloads,” said Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president of the HP Imaging and Printing Group, as he introduced the technology at a press conference in downtown San Francisco. The technology is aimed at companies that print hundreds of thousands or even millions of brochures or direct mailings.

Nokia Unveils Wibree Wireless Technology

TechNewsWorld: Nokia this week unveiled its Wibree technology, a wireless alternative to Bluetooth that the Finland-based company says is more energy-efficient, smaller in scale and could be used in small device applications such as intelligent jewelry and clothing.

The new technology, dubbed “Wibree,” uses less power than Bluetooth  and works in smaller devices such as watches and toys.

IBM plans new high-end Xeon server

News.com: IBM has committed to adding a fourth generation to its line of high-end Xeon servers, and the arrival of multicore chips means the system will be a notch smaller than its predecessors.

The company plans to release its X4 chipset when Intel’s next generation of high-end Xeon processors arrives in 2007, said Tom Bradicich, chief technology officer of IBM’s System x division, which sells x86 servers. The new x86 servers with the X4 chipset will continue with IBM’s “expand on demand” strategy, in which smaller server modules can be connected together with high-speed communication cables to form a larger multiprocessor machine.
