Pune police wake up to missing children

Indianexpress: The statistics point to the gravity of the situation. In 2006, as many as 549 boys and 627 girls went missing from Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Of these, 212 boys and 241 girls still remain untraced.

Jolted by the Nithari incident, the top brass of Pune police have directed inspectors in-charge of all the 20 police stations in the city to form special squads to find out the whereabouts of boys and girls who went missing in 2006.

Police Commissioner D N Jadhav on Monday issued orders to all police stations to constitute teams comprising one sub inspector and four constables to search the whereabouts of the girls and boys who are still missing.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Jadhav confirmed that such orders have been issued to inspectors in-charge of all police stations. “This is being done as an exercise to update our database. At times, missing people return home but the police are not informed. As a result, such cases remain unsolved in our records,” he said.

To begin with these teams would visit the residences of the missing children to find out whether they have returned home. The search teams have been asked to file status reports on the investigations in cases related to missing persons reported to the Juvenile Aid Police Unit in their respective police station jurisdiction, by January 15.

Although a number of cases related to missing persons are reported to the police every year, most of the cases remain unsolved due to failure of the police in tracing the whereabouts of those missing.

PCB incentive for catching strays falls flat

IndianExpress: With complaints pouring in from residents and the traffic police about stray animals walking on Cantonment roads and obstructing traffic especially on MG Road, East Street and Pulgate, the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) in July 2006, announced an incentive for citizens who would catch the strays and bring them to its pound at the Cantonment Store Yard in Babajan Chowk.

Six months after the scheme was announced, not a single animal has been brought to the pound by the citizens. The reason: While most Cantonment residents do not know about the scheme, others say the PCB is shirking its responsibility and putting the onus of catching strays on the citizens.

In July 2006, the PCB had advertised the scheme in the newspapers urging Cantonment residents to impound the strays and promised them Rs 200 per animal (buffalo, cow, bull, horse) and Rs 100 for every calf or donkey that was brought. The advertisement drew flak from Cantonment residents who maintained that it was the PCB’s duty to tackle the stray menace instead of putting the onus on them.

PCB Cantonment Executive Officer SK Sardana admitted the scheme had not taken off. “Our motive was not to expect citizens to do all the work . We wanted them to participate and help us in curbing the menace.”

Now, farmers in state g@t SMS on weather predi

Indianexpress: Two months ago, when an unseasonal rain hit Sangli, 55-year-old Subhash Dattatrey Arwe was one of the 200 farmers, mainly grape growers, in the State who was able to save his 40-acre grape plantation. For, a day before the rain, he received an SMS in Marathi, scripted in English, that warned him about it.

Arwe’s monthly investment of Rs 50 to receive the SMS helped him save about Rs 1 lakh that he would have incurred as a loss. Arwe and rest of his fellow farmers receive on an average two-three messages every week that gives them information about the cloud cover and rain predictions for the next couple of days.

For the past month-and-a-half, every week from IIT-Bombay’s Developmental Infomatics Laboratory with the information sourced from Baramati-based Krishi Vigyan Kendra, the “weather-through-SMS” criss-crosses the State giving weather predictions to farmers. “Before this, we sourced our weather information from the Internet through INSAT pictures, but the accuracy was just 40-45 per cent,” says Pimpalgaon farmer Arun More.

But with the SMS, More says, the accuracy level has gone up to 99 per cent. “Our experience with the SMS service has been amazing. We have been able to avoid unnecessary expenditure of Rs 1,000-Rs 2,000 per acre for fungicide spraying,” says the 38-year-old farmer, who cultivates grapes on his 35-acre farm with the produce going the local market, wineries and even abroad.

Agrocom, a spin-off enterprise of IIT-Bombay started by a group of software engineers, started this message revolution in the State to take benefits of technology to the agricultural community. Agrocom already has a portal ‘Almost All Questions Answered’ (AAQA), launched in 2004 that answers farmers’ queries and also runs a training centre that provides web and mobile agri-services to farmers.

On Sunday, 160 students will apply mind over matter for Guinness record

Indianexpress: They did not make it to the IIMs but that will not stop them from making a mark in the world. Over 160 students from a Pune-based management college — who got an average percentile of 40 in the Common Admission Test last year — are vying to create a world record in the feat of memorising objects.

And they plan to do it in style with each of them individually breaking the current record of 225 ‘random objects recalled’ at a marathon event on Sunday.

The feat — called Salam Kalam in honour of President APJ Kalam — will be registered in the Guinness Book of Records if they manage to memorise over 250 random objects in a correct sequence. Officials from the Limca Book of Records will be present during the attempt and international guidelines will be followed to register it as a world record.

The postgraduate management students, part of the 2006-08 PGDM batch at the Sadhana Centre for Management and Leadership Development (SCMLD), have been practicing the past three months for over an hour a day to prepare for the record attempt. With some students already managing to remember over 500 objects — good enough to at least break the existing record — college authorities are confident of success

Apple Unveils New Mobile Phone

NYTimes: Apple Computer (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs confirmed months of speculation Tuesday by unveiling a new mobile phone that plays and downloads music and a set-top box that allows people to stream video from their computers to their televisions.

Jobs said Apple’s iPhone would “reinvent” the telecommunications sector and “leapfrog” past the current generation of hard-to-use smart phones.

“Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything,” he said during his keynote address at the annual Macworld Conference and Expo. “It’s very fortunate if you can work on just one of these in your career. … Apple’s been very fortunate in that it’s introduced a few of these.”

Jobs demonstrated the phone’s music capabilities by playing “Lovely Rita, Meter Maid, ” from the Beatles’ Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

iPhone uses a patented technology Apple is calling “multi-touch,” and is essentially a computer with a blank screen that users configure with easy-to-use software so they can touch the monitor with their fingers.

“We’re going to use a pointing device that we’re all born with,” Jobs said. “It works like magic. … It’s far more accurate than any touch display ever shipped. It ignores unintended touches. It’s super smart.”

The phone automatically synchs your media — movies, movies, photos — through Apple’s iTunes digital content store. The device also synchs e-mail content, Web bookmarks and nearly any type of digital content stored on your computer.
