Indianexpress: The top party leaders’ tactic of pressurising the rebels to back out from the poll scene seems to have worked with the last day of withdrawal of nominations on Friday seeing as many as 785 candidates pulling out from the race. Now, the stage has been set for the February 1 civic elections with 1,134 candidates in fray for the 144 seats of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
A total of 2,084 candidates had filed their nominations, of which 887 had already withdrawn their nominations. Since all parties had rebel factor affecting them, the leaders had to work the phones and write personal letters to force the rebels to withdraw their candidature.
The large number of withdrawal on the last day of withdrawing the nominations is an indicator of “closed door management”, according to political observers.
Prominent candidates who have withdrawn their nominations include corporators who had filed nominations against their own party — Nandlal Dhivar against Anand Chhajed (Congress) from Bopodi ward, Tanaji Nimhan against Bhagwan Tukaram Nimhan from Pashan and Meenakshi Kadgi against Kamal Vyawahare from Ekbote Colony ward.
Congress rebels Chandrakant Sorte contesting against Harish Nikam from Deccan College ward has withdrawn their nominations. Congress rebel Ganesh Andekar contesting against Virendra Kirad, too, has withdrawn from Swami Samarth ward.
BJP rebel Bhagwan Kshirsagar contesting against Vijay Kale from P L Deshpande ward has also withdrawn his nominations and Sahebrao Salunkhe contesting against Shobha Bavthankar from Tingre Nagar Pumping Station ward has also backed out.

IndianExpress: For the second time in the past one and half months, after the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) began operating, the Pune Municipal Transport authorities stopped running the BRTS buses for an hour on the Swargate-Katraj corridor fearing citizens’ reactions after a dumper rammed into two two-wheelers at Padmavati on Friday morning.
The BRTS buses have been running in the dedicated bus lanes on Satara Road since December 4. Friday’s mishap did occur in the BRTS bus lane.
It occurred on the lane meant for other motorised vehicles. Kirti Kanti Lal (36), Dhankawadi resident, died due to the injuries caused by the mishap while three others including her husband have been admitted to a private hospital. The identities of other two victims are yet to be ascertained.
According to the Sahakarnagar police, the dumper was taking a right turn at Chavannagar chowk near Padmavati when it rammed into two motor-bikes that had halted for a traffic signal around 9 am.

Indianexpress: Bird-watchers from the city have reported sighting of at least 100 tawny eagles (also known as garud) near Bhuleshwar temple, some 50 km from Pune on Solapur Road.
According to avid ornithologist Dr Sattyasheel Naik the eagles are huge in size– two and a half feet in height with a wing span of about six feet. They have powerful feet with razor sharp talons with which they kill their prey. The legs of the eagles are covered with feathers up to the feet and their colour is either light or dark brown. Big eyes give them a binocular vision and they can spot a mice from a mile up in the sky.
What has brought them to Bhuleshwar is the chicken waste being dumped in the valley along the ghat. The eagles are found in groups of eight to ten, Dr Naik added.
“They usually hunt small animals like hares, rabbits, birds, hens,” said Naik pointing out that these eagles at Bhuleshwar have migrated from the Himalayas, Nepal, Western Pakistan and other parts of the Northern hemisphere.

Technews: Through 2007 and beyond, almost every organization with a wireless network will experience significant growth in WLAN size and usage, increasing diversity of devices that connect to the network, and greater heterogeneity of network infrastructure. With these new advances, IT organizations will need a strategy that combines the management and security of both wireless and wired network infrastructures.
It also promises, however, a path full of obstacles if enterprises choose to ignore how they will manage their networks.
Two years ago, security was their number one wireless network concern. Currently, many enterprises affirm that they are equally or more concerned about manageability.
Often regarded by the industry as separate and distinct issues, security and management represent two sides of the same coin. While enterprises maintain that it may be possible to define a strong security policy, it is difficult to implement and enforce those policies uniformly.
Management Is Necessary
Truth be told, a wireless network simply cannot be secure without management.
Almost all large organizations — from Fortune 500 corporations to universities and healthcare providers — operate growing WiFi networks for their increasingly mobile employees. Today, many of these employees view the WLAN (wireless local area network) as the primary means of connecting to the enterprise network.
Although companies use WLAN technology for different purposes, three critical trends have emerged across all industries as wireless networks rapidly become more mission critical, much more heavily utilized and significantly more complex. These key trends draw attention to the need for superior wireless network management in 2007 and beyond.

TechTree: Nimbuzz, a Netherlands-based technology firm working on VoIP and telecommunications applications has now launched its voice-enabled mobile and PC clients.
The products have been designed to support more than 500 mobile phone models, and Windows XP/2000 for PC clients.
Therefore, Nimbuzz is now mobile connected to Google Talk and MSN / Windows Live Messenger for chat and voice. This means that mobile Nimbuzz users can make calls to members on these communities on the PC and on mobiles.
Those connected through mobiles will pay the local call charges, while those connected through PC will have to pay nothing. It is made possible by eliminating the high roaming tariffs charged by operators.
Nimbuzz also allows international calls from users’ mobiles to other mobile phones at the cheapest local rate. However, this is possible only if both mobile phones have the Nimbuzz software installed.
Additional features of the new products include: mobile-to-mobile calls also at local cost, free (Group) text messaging, and the ability to place group calls on the fly with up to 5 buddies on Nimbuzz, Google Talk, or MSN Live Messenger.
Evert Jaap Lugt, CEO of Nimbuzz, said, “This release is a major step towards our next goal: connecting all major VoIP-communities on the Internet with the mobile for Chat, Voice, and various Messaging services. Nimbuzz is now testing the Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, and Skype connectivity, wait and see”.

The company said that the Latitude ATG D620 meets military standards for vibration, humidity, and altitude, and is designed to protect against accidental bumps, moisture, and other elements that customers encounter working in the field.
The new notebook features a shock-mounted hard drive, spill-resistant keyboard, port covers, and high durability paint, and is designed to withstand challenging conditions commonly associated with military environments, construction sites and first responders, such as police and emergency organizations.

The LCD display is one and half times brighter than most mainstream corporate notebooks for better viewing in sunlight. Customers working in the military, emergency preparedness, construction, and even the Golf industry say seeing the display in full daylight is an important factor in their notebook computing experience.
Launching this notebook, Jeff Clarke, Senior Vice President, Dell Product Group, said, “The Latitude ATG is a prime example of Dell’s commitment to customer-driven innovation. We have heard from customers loud and clear that a tougher, highly protective notebook with a screen that is easy to see outdoors is necessary in many lines of work. We are glad that we could meet that customer request with a product distinguished by industry-leading features.”
