With same promises, Congress sets new agenda: Global Pune

indianexpress:  A days after its coalition partner released its manifesto, the Congress on Tuesday came up with its own list of achievements and promises with the focus on making Pune a “global city”. From bringing back McKinsey to prepare an integrated plan for the city to improving public transport, it was almost the same old rhetoric that it dished out five years ago as it released its manifesto at Congress Bhavan.

Perhaps, realising that the party had nothing new to offer, local MP and Congress leader Suresh Kalmadi was on the defensive: “The backlog of unfulfilled promises will be cleared out soon. It takes time to get permissions from the State and Central governments.”

And just to prove it, he also announced the formation of a monitoring committee comprising Vanrai founder Mohan Dharia, former vice-chancellor of Pune University Ram Takawale and scientist Vijay Bhatkar to implement the manifesto.

Not to be left out from the personal attack that was carried out against him by NCP’s Ajit Pawar on Monday, Kalmadi came back strongly. “I do not have any problems with the NCP, but I cannot stand a person like Ajit,” he said.

10-year-old to attempt a glide into record books

indianexpress: The sky is definitely the limit for 10-year-old Shrikanta Pol, who is set to attempt an entry into the Limca Book of Records as the ‘Youngest and Smallest Paraglider in India’. On January 28, Pol will take off from a height of approximately 1500 ft at the Kanifa hill near Dive Ghat and attempt to stay in the air for as long as possible. If she succeeds, she will also be the youngest girl to attempt paragliding.

A long distance swimmer and adventure sports enthusiast, Pol heard about paragliding from a relative who showed her photographs of paragliders in action. “This piqued my interest and I read up about paragliding on the Internet,” said Pol, who studies at the Balbharati Public School, Navi Mumbai, and is in Pune training for the feat.

When she approached paragliding coach Eric Manazes six months ago, he was skeptical. “I felt she was too young, so I asked her to undergo aptitude tests,” said Manazes.

Pol cleared all of them. “She is a very gifted child and has the maturity and calm mindset required for paragliding,” Manazes said.

And so the practice sessions began on weekends and holidays at various locations on the Dive Ghat. The frequency increased and she has been practicing every day for the last fifteen days. While she still needs help during the initial take-off due to lack of physical strength, she can fly on her own and hover in air for nearly an hour and a half.

Walking on the wild side

indianexpress: The Wildscreen Festival — it is being held in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Pune — was inaugurated in the city on Tuesday at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

Highlighting the importance of films in the conservation of wildlife and environment, the Wildscreen Festival began with traditional lighting of the lamp at the hands of series producer, BBC Natural History Unit Mike Salisbury, marketing consultant for wildlife films Pam Beddard, wildlife filmmaker Harriet Nimmo and director of FTII Tripurari Sharan.

Two films were screened at the fest and Salisbury and Nimmo conducted lectures engaging the audience — mostly consisting of young filmmakers — in a discussion about the changing trends of wildlife films, sequence building and story-telling.

Speaking about their interaction with Indian filmmakers at other Wildscreen Festivals, Salisbury said: “India has the potential to make wonderful films on wildlife and environment — there is the talent and the required habitat. But unfortunately, what is lacking is the encouragement — may it be in terms of finance, expertise or even an audience.”

AFMC identifies wild virus causing chicken pox

indianexpress: In a development that may have widespread ramifications on the national immunisation policy, researchers at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) have identified a wild type of virus that causes chicken pox in the country. This is entirely different from the vaccine strain of the virus and hence, explains why the disease still occurs despite vaccination.

Col K K Lahiri, Professor, Department of Microbiology, who embarked on the project a year ago, studied 111 cases where armed services personnel had caught the infection in transit. “These cases represent the entire country,” says Dr K Kaushik, who had taken up the research as part of her thesis on ‘Molecular Characterisation of Wild Indian Strains of Varicella Zoster and Differentiation from the Vaccine Oka Strain’. The paper and its findings were adjudged as the best at the national conference of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists held in Nagpur recently.

In fact, the research clearly highlights that the current vaccine for chicken pox — which is being imported — is not very effective in India, as it has been developed using a Japanese strain of chicken pox. At least 50 gene sequences of the strain have been submitted to GenBank - the US’ National Centre for Biotechnology Information Database — Col Lahiri said

Despite stay order, civic body rips out balcony grille

indianexpress: When sixtyone-year-old Brigadier Asil Singh Ahlawat (Retd) and his wife Vikendri (59) decided to settle in their first floor flat in Alishan Apartments on Salunke Vihar Road in 2002 after their last posting in trouble-torn Kupwara, all they were looking for was peace.

Their only problem was the balcony and as a safety precaution they enclosed it with iron grilles in 2003. Promptly, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) served them a notice maintaining that the enclosing of the balcony was illegal because the parapet was broken to increase the construction area, a violation of the floor space index (FSI) norms.

The matter came to a head on January 18, 2007 when some 50 people — policemen from Kondhwa police chowki and the PMC’s demolition squad — reached Ahlawat’s residence and pulled out the iron grille. “This, in spite of a stay order from the PMC court I had obtained on January 17,” Brigadier Ahlawat said.

“The PMC staff ignored the stay order and the police supported them in this illegal act. When my wife pleaded with them she was intimidated and threatened by PSI Jitendra Kadam,” Ahlawat said, adding that the PMC did not give them the mandatory 15 days’ notice. However, PMC development engineer Shantaram Thorat said there was no stay order. “We have done the right thing in demolishing the illegal structure,” he added.

‘Driver 76′ for PSP in March ‘07

TechTree: Ubisoft has announced that it will launch the ‘Driver 76′ video game for the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) system.

The company said that ‘Driver 76′ would feature all-new content with 27 new missions exclusively designed for gaming on the go. ‘Driver 76′ is the first all-new edition of the famed ‘Driver’ series to be released since Ubisoft acquired the franchise in 2006.

‘Driver 76′ is an action driving game that features Hollywood-style car chases, while letting the player experience the open environment on foot. The game thrusts the player into the heart of the 1970s, through 27 missions divided into six main plots. Players can take side jobs, earning cash that can be used to modify their rides.

‘Driver 76′ offers an extensive multiplayer mode and a host of mini-games ranging from Street Racing, Destruction Derby, Pink Slip Racing, and Swap Meet. Players can also download new paintjobs to use on collected vehicles in the garage.

The game is a prequel to ‘Driver: Parallel Lines’ and the year is 1976, two years before ‘Driver: Parallel Lines’. Players can experience open environments in authentic 1970s New York, including all the architecture, music, cars, and clothes of that period. There is also a vehicle modification system, wherein players will collect their favorite vehicles, and complete side job missions to get cash to modify their rides.

‘Driver 76′ provides high-speed Hollywood racing action where high-speed cars race and crash, and players can go even faster by customizing their car with special parts. Besides, the game has an authentic 1970s soundtrack, wherein players can immerse themselves into that era with classic songs from the decade.

InputManager provides route to root for Mac attackers

itwire: The third week of the Month of Apple Bugs has kicked off with a vulnerability that “makes every ‘denial of service issue’ leading to a so-called ‘crash’ usable for escalating privileges.”

The sample exploit installs a InputManager in the user’s Library folder, then causes it to be executed by UserNotificationCenter, a piece of software that runs with ‘wheel’ privileges (roughly equivalent to admin) and provides a mechanism for programs without user interfaces to interact with the user.

The InputManager then replaces installAssistant (part of System Preferences) with a shell wrapper giving root access, then makes it executable again by repairing privileges. The attacker is then able to run this program to operate with root privileges.

The exploit can also be triggered by kernel panics caused by corrupted font or disk image files.

As it stands, this appears to be a local vulnerability, but that’s still an issue in shared environments as it could be used by someone with a ordinary user account to make unauthorised changes to the system or to gain access to other users’ files.

The suggested workaround is to limit user’s access to their InputManagers folder and prevent permissions repair.

Apple plugs QuickTime vulnerability

itwire: Apple has released its first security update for 2007, addressing the QuickTime vulnerability that kicked off the Month of Apple Bugs project.

A flaw in QuickTime for Mac OS X and Windows meant a specially crafted RTSP URL would cause a buffer overflow, potentially leading to the execution of arbitrary (and possibly malicious) code.

The update performs additional validation of such URLs.

Mac users can download and install the update via the Software Update utility, or from Apple Updates.

The Windows version of the update mentioned in Apple’s bulletin did not appear to be available at the time of writing. That said, Windows users can right-click the QuickTime icon in the system tray and select “Check for QuickTime Updates” to fetch and install the latest components.
