indianexpress: TWO days after the debacle in the civic elections, Congressmen in the city who assembled at Congress Bhavan to felicitate the 36 winning candidates, maintained all was not lost and the party will stake its claim to Pune’s mayorship.
Member of Parliament Suresh Kalmadi urged workers on Sunday to prepare themselves for ‘a political battle with renewed vigour and aggression’. “The NCP is behaving as if it has a clear majority. It has only 41 seats. Can it tell us with which party it proposes to form a coalition,” said Kalmadi.
The Congress leadership felt, going by the party strengths (Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena combine — 45, Nationalist Congress Party — 41 and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena — 8), it still stands a good chance to lead a coalition in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) if the 14 independents are taken along. A plan which the other major parties would also be considering.
The Congress believes if it can woo the independents, who do not stand to gain much by themselves. If the party can do that its strength in the 144-member PMC will increase substantially. “If the 14 independents come to our side, our strength will be 50. We can then rightfully claim the post of mayor,” said a senior party leader.
According to the draw for reservations, Pune will get a woman mayor from the open category. For the sixth time since 1996-97, Pune’s first citizen will be a woman.
Congress MLA from the Cantonment Chandrakant Shivarkar has appealed to the leaders to ensure that Pune’s next mayor will be from the party. He, however, refused to divulge the basis for such a political equation. “The equations will be worked out by the party high command later,” he told Pune Newsline.

indianexpress: SIFTING through dusty bulky files at police stations for that little bit of information about a crime that took place a decade ago may soon be a thing of the past. For the Crime Branch of the city police is all set to install a new software that can store data of over 20,000 criminals and carry out a search at the click of a button.
Called the Scientific Criminal Search System (SCSS), the software has been tailor-made for the Modus Operandi Bureau (MOB) of the Crime Branch and will be able to carry out a search on several parametres.
Also, the software can carry out multiple searches and will reduce the MOB’s cumbersome paper work considerably. DCP (Crime) Anil Kumbhare said: “The software will be useful in tracking down criminals. Also, based on the modus operandi of a criminal, we will be able to see if a similar crime has occurred before, which will help us look for patterns, if any. The software has been designed in such a way that it will contain data of all criminals on record.”
SCSS — it will first be introduced across 20 city police stations in the city and allow single field search and advance (multiple) field search — will later be linked to the district and taluka level for easy sharing of information. Detailed information of the Crime Registered (CR), along with the photo of the accused, details of the crime, weapons used, etc. will also be stored in the records and be allowed as search fields

indianexpress: WHEN Rajendra aka Babu Wagaskar, a young leader of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, filed his nomination for the PMC polls from Koregaon Park he had little idea that he was all set to emerge as a giant winner.
But the results changed everything. When Wagaskar walks on the lanes of Koregaon Park people look at him with awe. After all, he is the one who won the election by defeating stalwarts like NCP MLA Kamal Dhole Patil’s son Sagar, sitting corporator Jaydeo Randhave and Bhagvan Vairat of the Congress.
Moreover, the ward has been a domain of the Dhole Patils’. Either Sagar’s father Ulhas Dhole Patil or mother Kamal have been representing the ward in PMC for the last 35 years. Similarly, the mix of slums and elite voters were being considered assets for the Republican Party of India candidate Randhave and also for Vairat.
Wagaskar says he was always confident of his victory. “Although I was contesting the election for the first time, I knew the voters will prefer me because I was the only candidate who could strike a chord with them. The slum dwellers knew me well because I have been active in politics for almost two decades now. The elite voters were impressed because I used a laptop instead of handbills,” he said.

indianexpress: TENSION prevailed in Kondhwa locality for the third consecutive day on Sunday when hundreds of supporters of defeated RPI-A candidate from Ward No 22 Mariam Bangali staged a massive protest at Mithangar Chowk in Kondhwa demanding ouster of sitting Sena corporator from Mithanagar Megha Babar. She is the daughter-in-law of former deputy mayor of the city and sitting NIBM road corporator Mahadeo Babar. Both Megha and Mariam had polled 2,289 votes when a postal ballot in favour of Megha led to her victory.
The irate supporters of the Bangali raised slogans against Babar accusing her of rigging the polls. The supporters raising slogans that they would not allow Babar to step into their ward in the future. Mariam alleged that the postal ballot cast in favour of Megha was invalid and demanded that she should be booked for using false means to obtain victory. The police, sensing trouble, deployed heavy bandobast in the area to avoid further conflict.
Kondhwa has been tense ever since the three municipal wards of NIBM Road, Mithanagar and Kondhwa Khurd went to the polls along with 141 others on Thursday. Supporters of newly elected Sena corporator Mahadeo Babar clashed with those of his Nationalist Congress Party rival Sanjay Lonkar on Friday evening, forcing the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) to lathi-charge a 300-strong mob.

indianexpress: The Pune Rural Police on Sunday busted a flesh trade racket in a dance bar in Loni Kalbhor. A crime branch team raided Saraswati Kala Kendra at Urli Devachi Mantarwadi Phata and arrested 21 girls, including minors, 17 workers and 20 customers.
The police also nabbed the manager of the bar Ramesh Parshuram Londhe and recovered Rs 63,685 in cash. However, the owner, Bharat alias Bhau Anna Gagtap, managed to flee.
“Our team posed as customers and we had concrete information that illegal activities was going on under the garb of a kala kendra and hence we decided to raid it. Some of the girls are minors and have been forced into prostitution. We suspect the girls to have been trafficked from the neighbouring Ahmednagar, Solapur, Latur and Osmanabad districts. Investigations in the case are on are being carried out to find out further details in the case,” said Rural SP Vishwas Nangre Patil.
According to crime branch officials, the bar was spread over an area of five acres and catered to raunchy dance performances besides flesh trade. Moreover, it had high walls on all sides so as not to invite any attention from outsiders. All the accused have been booked under the Immoral Trafficking Act.

technewsworld: ”The value-add the new application offers is all around ease of use, ease of customization and integration,” Yankee Group analyst Sheryl Kingstone told CRM Buyer. The tighter integration will be a selling point with resellers of both the front- and back-end products, she said. “The pre-packaged integration points will help them configure applications for their own customers.
Sage Software has introduced SageCRM Version 6, with upgrades that enhance the usability and productivity of the application, as well as new administrative capabilities.
Much of the development that went into this release targeted end-user adoption, said Chris Reich, the group’s director of CRM product management. “We have focused our efforts on delivering a meaningful user experience to our clients.”
Sage also tightened the linkages between its applications in this release, enabling bidirectional front- and back-office integration with Sage Accpac ERP, Sage Pro ERP, Sage MAS 90 ERP and Sage Timberline Office, and other third-party back-office systems.

technewsworld: Blackboard, a leading provider of enterprise technology to the education community, announced on Thursday that it would not use its technology against open-source alternatives, including in-house, “home grown” course management software developed by schools — for example, software that handles tasks such as tracking grades or distributing quizzes.
Facing sharp criticism from academic computing experts, Blackboard announced Thursday what it calls a legally binding promise that it won’t pursue patent lawsuits against users of open source online classroom technology.
An open source group said it welcomed the move but noted a key caveat: The pledge doesn’t apply when users such as universities bundle open source and proprietary code to create their own “mix and match” systems.
The announcement is the latest development in a case that has been closely followed in the information technology and education communities.
A year ago, Blackboard, which has about 60 percent of the market for so-called “e-learning” systems, was awarded a patent that covers some of the basic features of the software used by colleges and universities to run courses over the Internet .
The patents prompted an angry backlash from some members of the academic computing community, who called it an attempt to own the very idea of online learning.

bbc: Microsoft has released tools that should make it much easier for users to share and save text-based files.
Working with three partners Microsoft has released a translation program that converts Word documents into more “open” formats.
Specifically, it lets users save Word documents in the ODF format favoured by the free Open Office application.
More translation add-ons for other applications in Microsoft’s Office package of programs will follow.
Rivalries in the technology world mean that companies develop their own proprietary file formats which do not work together.
This means that moving documents between programs on different machines can be frustrating.
Although it is possible to save files in neutral configurations so they can be moved around easily, these do not preserve all the nuances of style and layout available in proprietary formats.
The translation tool should ease some of the frustration as it lets users open, alter and save files in Word that have been previously saved in the Open Document format (ODF).
Amongst others, ODF is used by the free Open Office program that is becoming a rival to Microsoft’s Office suite of applications.

There is a good chance that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will allow mobile WiMAX to be included in its range of 3G technologies, collectively known as IMT-2000.
itwire:Such a move would bring considerable benefits by allowing WiMAX to operate in globally allocated frequency bands, allow it to be used to complement other 3G technologies, enable global roaming and reduce equipment costs.
According to the WiMAX Forum, in a new White Paper “WiMAX and IMT-2000″ “including IP-OFDMA (mobile WiMAX) within the IMT-2000 family of radio transmission technologies will put mobile WiMAX on a comparable worldwide footing with EV-DO, HSPA, and other recent and planned enhancements to 3G technology. This will offer operators an additional migration path to consider as they strive to add network capabilities to support a larger suite of value-added broadband services.”
The White paper explains: “Supporting IP-OFDMA in the IMT-2000 family enables significant flexibility in network deployment options and service offerings. For example, service providers can provide access in low density environments or enhance access capacity in metropolitan and suburban areas to support value-added services. The inclusion of this additional radio interface would provide added value by giving service providers additional flexibility in selecting an IMT-2000 technology for a more optimal fit to their business model, and a more logical stepping stone to the delivery of Next Generation Mobile Internet services…The WiMAX Forum Global Roaming Working Group expects to announce a specification and business model to assure ‘roaming’ within WiMAX as well as other networks designated in IMT-2000. Service providers also benefit from open global standards that foster vendor interoperability and lower equipment costs.”
