indianexpress: Nationalist Congress Party leader (NCP) Ajit Pawar on Friday asserted his party’s claim over the coveted posts of mayor and standing committee chairperson in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), saying, in an oblique reference to the Congress, that those who cannot accept this were free to sit in the opposition for five years.
Referring to the oft repeated statement by Congressmen that they would sit in the opposition as declared by their party MP Suresh Kalmadi, the NCP leader said: “They keep talking of sitting in the opposition and chasing the independents at the same time”.
“Last time we were in minority and had to be satisfied with the post of deputy mayor. But now we are in majority and other parties will have to accept our condition,” he said. “The main aim is to muster a majority in the PMC. However, the final decision will be taken only after consultations with senior party leaders.”
The Nationalist Congress Party claimed the support of eight independents and Pune Lokshahi Aghadi office-bearers Sachin Taware and Shashikala Kumbhar. Pawar said he is awaiting the notification on proportional party representation on civic panels before deciding on their entry into the NCP.
He said talks were on with prospective coalition partners. “If needed, we will set aside political ideologies and differences in the interest of the city’s development.”

indianexpress: Having already opened a global delivery network with a 1,600-seat capacity in Pune in August last, the $16.5-billion IT behemoth Accenture is now betting on the city to grow its India business. So, when its number two man and chief operating officer Stephen J Rohleder makes a pit stop for the first time in the city on his third visit to the country, it is with a specific intention of checking out its new facility and its employees. “I am really excited about the accelerated growth experienced in Pune,” he says.
With the 1,600-seat capacity being filled up soon, it is the next phase that Accenture is looking forward to. “Pune is specifically special for us and we think it is a tremendous place for growth.” All three of its operating groups — financial services, products (manufacturing, distribution and industrial product clients) and resources (energy, utilities etc.) — have their presence in Pune and it is through these three groups that Accenture hopes to drive its growth momentum.
“Pune allows us to tap into the educational market. It is an attractive place for our management, executives and new staff to work because of its cost of living. It is actually much more reasonable than parts of Mumbai,” Rohleder says.
One of the main criteria of Accenture selecting a location is the cost of living and also the place should have an established and steady stream of talent. “Pune offers both the characteristics,” he says.
What excites Rohleder more is not the availability of resources, but the leadership that is willing to come and settle here. “That is interesting and when I look into the eyes of my people, what I find fundamentally is the excitement and tenacity to give out the best. Everyone wants to be Bill Green (Chairman and CEO of Accenture)… everyone wants to be a CEO,” he laughs

indianexpress: Individual efforts at keeping one’s environment clean would go a long way towards making Pune a better city, eminent scientist Jayant Narlikar said on Friday. He was speaking at the valedictory function for volunteers of the mass river cleaning drive organised under the banner of International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) on September 16 and 30, 2006.
At a programme which had no inaugural lamp lighting ceremony, felicitations, or vote of thanks, Narlikar and Gandhian thinker Naresh Dadhich spoke to the students in an informal session moderated by ornithologist Kiran Purandare.
Citing the example of an initiative undertaken by him along with some colleagues to clean up the garbage at the Pune University, Narlikar urged the students to make an effort to carry out such activities on an individual level. Dadhich said that Puneites should develop a keener “aesthetic sense” so that they would no longer ignore or tolerate the dirt and pollution around them.
Certificates were distributed by Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) President VD Karad to over a thousand volunteers, which included students from various schools and colleges like Bishop’s School, Rewachand Bhojwani Academy, Aksharnandan School, Symbiosis College, Fergusson, ILS Law College, Wadia College and Abeda Inamdar College, as well as working professionals from companies like Vanaz Engineers.

indianexpress: Architects are not well-equipped to deal with various aspects of restoration and conservation of heritage structures, said Sharveya Dhongde architect and member of the Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage (INTACH), Pune. He was speaking at an international symposium on ‘Academic Anatomy of Curriculum for Advanced Studies in Heritage Management’ at the Pune University.
Dhongde said restoration of a heritage building threw up various challenges before, during and after the construction work was completed. “There are many stakeholders and commercial, cultural and religious concerns involved in the conservation of these structures. Architects today are only trained in technical aspects, and cannot handle these diverse elements,” he said, calling for comprehensive education and coordination with experts from related fields like history, archaeology, and so on.
The symposium saw delegates from the University of Halle, and the Technical University, Dessau in Germany, archaeologists Vasant Shinde and Ashok Marathe from Deccan College, as well as Shubhangana Atre and Manjiri Bhalerao of Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth. INTACH members Arati Kirloskar and Sanjay Deshpande were also present.
“The aim of the symposium is to develop an advanced curriculum in heritage management, and eventually, work towards starting a post-graduate course at the University of Pune, run by the BNCA. We will also explore possibilities of academic cooperation between the University of Halle, Technical University Dessau, and Pune University,” said BNCA principal Anurag Kashyap.

indianexpress: Surg Vice Admiral V K Singh, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) has expressed apprehension over doctors quitting the Armed Forces due to lack of incentives while speaking with media persons on the concluding day of the Armed Forces Medical Research conference at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) on Friday.
Surg Vice Admiral Singh was replying to a query on the trend of doctors quitting the Armed Forces for better opportunities in the private sector.
While he refuted the claim that there was an exodus of doctors, Surg Vice Admiral Singh however admitted he was worried that doctors may quit if promotions and additional incentives were not provided. It may be recalled here that the A V Singh committee had created additional vacancies for the post of a full colonel after just 20 years of service. It was also recommended that the second phase of the A V Singh committee should create more vacancies for promoting colonels to the rank of brigadiers and major generals.
Surg Vice Admiral Singh averred that they were getting several applications for admission to the medical colleges. For instance, there are over 1.3 lakh applications for 131 seats for an MBBS degree. He assured that the second phase of the committee’s recommendations will be implemented soon. There is a definite thinking that the retirement age should be increased for doctors and instead of retiring at 58 their services should be extended to 65 years. He pointed out that Chinese army doctors were as old as 85 years.

techtree: Yahoo! has reportedly launched the prototype of a new service called “Yahoo Pipes” that will let regular users mix different RSS and Atom feeds.
Yahoo! Pipes is a hosted visual development tool that enables manipulation of data feeds from Web sites for creating new applications. It is aimed at providing better tools to connect the growing number of structured data sources, and at allowing developers to drag-and-drop multiple Internet data sources such as RSS feeds to create new “mashup” applications.
Reportedly, the technical inspiration for Pipes comes from Unix, an OS using which, programmers can establish a pipeline of connected data sources.
According to Yahoo!, the usefulness of the huge volume of XML feeds available to Web users is limited because users are restricted to feed readers which can access the information from one feed.
However, Pipes allows users to take the data from one or more feeds and use it to build new applications.
Explaining it further, Yahoo! said that Pipes’ initial set of modules lets users assemble personalized information sources out of existing Web services and data feeds. In addition, users can also create pipes that accept user input, and run them on company servers as a kind of miniature Web application.
For example, the company will open up access to the Pipes engine to programmers, and add support for the KML data source, which is used to display geographic data on Google Earth and Google Maps Web sites.
Presently, the service has been designed just to work with RSS and Atom feeds, but the company plans to extend the service to support other data formats, Web services, processing modules, and output renderings.

cnn: Microsoft Corp. plans a launch this spring of its next-generation operating system for wireless devices, Windows Mobile 6, which is important for the company’s efforts to grab market share beyond the desktop.
Microsoft is expected to disclose details of Windows Mobile 6 on Monday at a telecommunications conference in Barcelona, Spain.
The company pledged that the new software would render e-mails and other documents much as they appear on desktop computers. The software also will have deeper connectivity to Microsoft’s “Live” suite of online services, including instant messaging.
Those features are part of a broader effort by Microsoft to use connectivity to its prevalent desktop software as a strategy for catching up with the worldwide leader in mobile operating systems, Symbian Ltd. Symbian says more than 100 million phones with its software have been sold; Microsoft doesn’t give comparable figures but points to a Gartner prediction that 64 million Windows-enabled devices will have been sold by 2009.
