indianexpress: With Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, one of the hoardings at Deccan Gymkhana was decorated with pink heart-shaped balloons (see inset). However, a group of youngsters opposed to such celebrations in the city pulled down most of the balloons on Monday evening. Earlier, another group ransacked a card shop on Senapati Bapat Road and set some cards afire. Meanwhile, vice president of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena students’ wing Rupali Patil has said her party will not tolerate harassment of women and girls by anti-social elements on Valentine’s Day. “We have formed special squads which will tour educational institutions and curb harassment of girl students,” she said. The MNS will undertake special drives to spread AIDS and pollution awareness among students on Wednesday, she added.

indianexpress: THE Rs 16 crore project to upgrade the decaying sewage system in the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) will get a boost as the civic body will shortly sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to begin work. The civic bodies are likely to sign the MoU within the next two weeks to demarcate the scope of work and decide on a joint action plan.
According to PCB sources, the MoU will encompass the location of the main sewage line and works on the Manik Nalla that comes under the jurisdiction of both bodies. Other things like locations of pumping stations and setting up a sewage treatment plant will also be resolved.
Earlier, a Rs 16 crore plan for relaying the entire sewage system in the Pune Cantonment area was given the nod by top authorities on a priority basis as the present system had collapsed due to an increasing population.
The existing sewage system, laid nearly 60 years ago to cater to a population of 20,000 residents, has to be entirely re-laid as it frequently gets flooded and causes sanitary problems in the areas. The problem gets aggravated during the monsoon season in low lying areas like Bhimpura lines, Solapur Bazar area and Shivaji market where waste disposal lines from individual properties get clogged.

indianexpress: COME June and the country’s computer prowess will get a further boost with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) installing India’s fastest computer at the National Param Supercomputing Facility on the University of Pune campus. “The new supercomputer will be of 5-7 teraflop,” CDAC director general S Ramakrishnan said.
Currently, the fastest supercomputer — Param — is of one teraflop (a teraflop is a measure of computer’s speed) and CDAC had recently announced that it would soon be coming out with 1.5 teraflop supercomputer specifically for bioinformatics research and development.
“The main purpose of the project is to make computer system useful to users for high-end research. It will be used to carry out researches in oil exploration, space, aircraft and structural designs and will also be used extensively by India Meteorological Department (IMD),” CDAC director Sharad Purohit said.
The project to come out with a faster supercomputer was carried out by CDAC in collaboration with “industrial partners” — Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), drug design firm Jubilant Biosys and Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Agency.
Purohit said the new supercomputer was remotely controlled, but after it is commissioned, it would be integrated into GARUDA. (See box)
“Besides these institutes, the new supercomputer will also be used by Thiruvananthapuram-based Vikram Sarabhai Space Research Centre and Ahmedabad-based Space Application Centre,” he said.

indianexpress: THE Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) now has a new president with Brigadier R J Sharma taking oath to the office on Monday evening. Brig Sharma, who also assumed command of the Pune Sub Area, has taken over after the PCB was without a regular president for over month. The officer, who took a tour of the PCB office and met senior officials, has promised to come out with a road map for the cantonment area within a month to address all issues.
“A priority will be to make the cantonment area cleaner and greener. A lot of environmental activities are already in place and I would follow them up aggressively,” Brig Sharma said, at a media interaction after the swearing in ceremony. He added that improving the civic amenities in the area would also be on his target list while drawing up the action plan.
The officer said that there would be closer interaction between PCB and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to carry out faster and more efficient developmental works. “A roadmap (for PCB) will be prepared within two months with time frames and targets to be achieved,” the Brigadier said. However, he added that ongoing projects and existing civic amenities would be accorded top priority. “Before taking on new projects we must ensure that all current ones are working,” he said.

techtree: Intel has developed a chip dubbed “Tera Research Chip” that promises to deliver supercomputer-like performance and consume less electricity.
Being labeled as the world’s first programmable processor, this 80-core chip is the result of Intel’s “Tera-scale computing” research aimed at delivering Teraflops (trillions of calculations per second) performance for future PCs and servers.
The 80-core research chip achieves teraflops of performance while consuming only 62 watts, which is less than that consumed by many single-core processors today. It offers specific insights into new silicon design methodologies, high-bandwidth interconnects, and energy management approaches.
Intel believes that Tera-scale performance, and the ability to move terabytes of data, will play a pivotal role in future PCs with everywhere access to the Internet by powering new applications for education and collaboration, as well as enabling the rise of HD entertainment on PCs, servers, and handheld devices.
The company has no plans to bring this exact chip designed with floating point cores to market. However, the Tera-scale research is active in investigating new innovations in processor or core functions, the types of chip-to-chip and chip-to-computer interconnects required to best move data. Also, it is active in finding, how software needs to be designed to best leverage multiple processor cores.
The first time Teraflops performance was achieved was in 1996, on the ASCI Red Supercomputer by Intel for the Sandia National Laboratory. Taking more than 2,000 square feet, the computer was powered by nearly 10,000 Pentium Pro processors, and consumed over 500 kilowatts of electricity.
Interestingly, the new research chip achieves the same performance on a multi-core chip.

techtree: Sophos has announced the launch of an anti-virus product for Windows Mobile.
The company claims that ‘Sophos Mobile Security’, as the product is called, will protect organizations against increasing number of malware attacks aimed at Windows Mobile.
Sophos also said that ‘Sophos Mobile Security’ provides immediate protection for Windows Mobile 5.0 based devices against mobile viruses and spyware threats, and enables IT administrators to implement and lock down security policies for PDAs and smart phones.
Moreover, it protects devices against malware attacks via MMS, SMS, e-mail, instant messaging, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, thus ensuring that business communications are kept secure. This anti-virus is also easy to install and configure, and offers on-access, on-demand, or scheduled scanning, and detects and detains any mobile viruses or spyware with minimal impact on device performance. Besides, central policies can be created and deployed to ensure consistent company-wide security.
On this occasion, John Stringer, Product Manager, Sophos, said that there is no doubt that the use of smart phones and PDAs is on the rise, letting employees access the Internet from virtually anywhere with just a click of a button. Unprotected mobiles can be a route for hackers into a seemingly well-defended network. Although the number of mobile threats is small compared to more commonly encountered Windows-specific malware, administrators are looking to defend all points of entry into their organization.
