indianexpress: According to PMC sources, the belated entry and the imminent exit of MSRDC has cost the project “not less than six months” vis-a-vis the target completion date of two projects - road & traffic and storm water drains - under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and perhaps in sanctioning of central funds. The consultant for other two projects — slum improvement and water supply — was to be IL&FS.
Speaking to Pune Newsline, Municipal Commissioner Nitin Kareer confirmed that the civic administration received a letter from MSRDC on Tuesday asking it to reconsider the appointment as consultant. “The MSRDC does not wish to carry the work process after getting approval of standing committee and the general body. They have other problems too,” he said adding that a fresh proposal will be tabled in the oncoming standing committee informing the members about MSRDC’s withdrawal, he said.
When contacted, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, MSRDC Ramanath Jha said the authority found it difficult to work in conditions that required prior permission from the civic committees and the civic body to start work. “MSRDC works under a fixed methodology in various cities and it will be difficult to change it here (PMC). We expect to be working as implementing agency, where the responsibilities (bidding, tendering, approval from the government) will be carried out by us directly,” he said. The PMC had imposed fresh responsibilities and conditions that were not there earlier, he added

indianexpress: MONIQUE and Philippe Benat-Aissi have had a dream for years — of having a baby. They could not conceive for a long time and grew tired of waiting for appointments of doctors treating infertility in Europe. That was before they came to Ruby Hall Clinic’s In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) endoscopy centre.
Today, the French couple is looking forward to having twins. Monique, who underwent the IVF procedure has got two healthy embryos and the couple is looking forward to the delivery in China.
The Benat-Aissis are the fifteenth foreign couple to visit Pune for IVF treatment while Ruby Hall, into its fourth year, has conducted over 1,000 such IVF procedures, says chief of the IVF Endoscopy centre Dr Sunita Tandulwadkar.
Monique says she was desperate to have a baby. “I am 38 years old and my husband is 41. It is so tiring to wait for an appointment with a doctor in Europe,” says Monique who is studying international shipping in Germany while staying in France. Phillipe, an automotive engineer with a French company will complete his two-year posting in Pune on Saturday and has been transferred to China.
“The twins could not have come at a more opportune time,” says the couple who were concerned about their advancing age when they learnt about the IVF centre’s significant success rate. “The treatment cost abroad is also nine-ten times more expensive than in India,” says Phillipe.

indianexpress: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police on Thursday began investigations into allegations of online fraud against bid2win, an online bidding portal, nearly three weeks after a complaint was lodged by city businessman Hussain Khajuri who said he was swindled.
Khajuri, a resident of Kondhwa Khurd, had bid for a Compaq Pressario Notebook C 301 on January 15. He claimed to have clocked the lowest and unique bid of 9.51 on the online auction.
The customer care department of bid2win, in response to an email sent by Pune Newsline on Wednesday, said: “Please note that the lowest unique bid among the website bidders was awarded the prize.Since Mr.Hussain Khajuri’s bid was the second lowest unique bid hence he was not awarded the prize”.
However, Khajuri has another story to tell: According to him, on January 1, he made the mandatory advance payment of Rs 550 — for 50 points, at Rs 10 each. Khajuri was surprised to find that the website had announced the lowest unique bid at 13.08 a day after he made what he thought was the lowest bid.
Sensing a goof up ,Khajuri immediately sent mails to the website asking them to clarify the issue. Instead, the website unilaterally reduced the bid figure to as low as 0.4 negating Khajuri’s claim at 9.51 for the Compaq Pressario.
“The website hosted the result at 13.08 on January 25 and after my message changed it to 0.4 on February 2. This is a fraud and needs to be investigated properly as the company takes money from people through an UK-based money transfer service, There must be be many like me who have lost money to this swindle,” said Khajuri

indianexpress: Coming out strongly against increased load shedding proposed by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to meet the power crisis, Prayas Energy Group has said that high-end luxury consumers like shopping malls and multiplexes be asked to reduce consumption by 50 per cent or face a closure for three months.
Speaking at a public hearing of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) on Thursday over increase in planned load-shedding by one hour in urban areas and two hours in rural areas, the NGO said State government offices should also ban the use of air conditioners to tide over the problem.
“Big shopping malls typically consume 2-3 MW of energy everyday. The usage should be regulated by 30-50 per cent failing which power supply may be shut down for three months (the peak shortage period). They can afford to generate their own power for the period,” Prayas member Shantanu Dixit said at the hearing.
Industrial representatives also protested against the five-day week to be enforced due to power shortage. “The industry should get preference for power over lighting up hoardings and advertisements. With only five days of productivity, industry cannot provide wages for six days,” Industries Association (Nagpur) representative, Milind Kekde, said.

indianexpress: WITH the government cutting petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2 and Re 1 respectively per litre, the fuel prices in the city will become cheaper by another 25-30 paise. While petrol prices will come down by Rs 2.25 to Rs 2.30 per litre, the diesel prices will be cheaper by around Rs 1.30 per litre.
The new price list is expected to arrive by midnight and it will come into effect from 7 am on Friday, according to Pune Dealers’ Association president Baba Dhumal. “The revised prices will be calculated by adding the sales tax and octroi to the basic price,” he said.
Currently, regular petrol costs Rs 51.66 per litre, while Speed costs Rs 53.03 and diesel Rs 36.95. The fuel cost is higher in Pune as octroi is charged at 4 per cent.
In November, after the petrol dealers’ association threatened to go on a Statewide no-purchase campaign, the state government in December had brought down the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.50 and Rs 1.50 per litre by decreasing sales tax on petrol from 34 per cent to 25 per cent and diesel by 5 per cent, according to Pune Petrol Dealers’ Association treasurer Ali Daruwala.
He said the petrol prices had touched an all-time high of Rs 55.25 in October. Nearly a year-and-a-half ago petrol had dipped below the Rs 50 per litre mark, with the price being Rs 47.95

indianexpress: STRINGENT security arrangements will be made in Pune city and rural outskirts on Friday when lakhs of devotees throng various pilgrim centres like Bheemashankar and Baneshwar in the district as well as Shiv temples in the city to mark Mahashivratri.
For Pune rural police, it is a major security step up as big fairs will be held at atleast four places in the district—Bheemashankar, Baneshwar, Bhuleshwar and Neelkantheshwar. At least two lakh devotees from all over the country are expected to visit Bheemashankar which is one of the 12 jyotirlingas.
The fair at Baneshwar on Satara Road is expected to draw a crowd of at least one lakh while around 50,000 people are expected to visit Neelkantheshwar temple in Mulshi taluka. The same amount are expected to visit Bhuleshwar temple near Yavat too.
Having already learnt their lesson from the stampede at Mandhardevi, the police are planning to make maximum security arrangements at these pilgrim centres to ensure that no untoward incidents takes place.
District Superintendent of Police Vishwas Nangare Patil said in addition to the existing manpower of Pune rural police, plans are also on to deploy some 135 newly recruited policemen who are still undergoing training on security arrangements.
“A total of 14 officers and 80 constables will be deployed at Bheemashankar. Around 50 policemen will be at Baneshwar and 25 each at Neelkantheshwar and Bhuleshwar,” he said.

techtree: At the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco, IBM has revealed a first-of-its-kind, on-chip memory technology that features the fastest access times ever recorded in embedded dynamic random access memory (eDRAM).
The company says that the new eDRAM technology, which is designed using IBM’s Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) for high-performance at low power, vastly improves microprocessor performance in multi-core designs and speeds the movement of graphics in gaming, networking, and other image intensive, multi-media applications.
IBM’s new technology, which is also designed in stress-enabled 65nm (nanometer) SOI using deep trench, improves on-processor memory performance in about one-third the space with one-fifth the standby power of conventional SRAM (static random access memory).
In a statement, Subramanian Iyer, Development Director, IBM, said, “IBM is effectively doubling microprocessor performance beyond what classical scaling alone can achieve. As semiconductor components have reached the atomic scale, design innovation at the chip-level has replaced materials science as a key factor in continuing Moore’s Law. Today’s announcement further demonstrates IBM’s leadership in this critical area of microprocessor design innovation.”
It is learnt that Moore’s Law is a decades-old computer industry principle stating that the power of computer chips doubles every two years.
Iyer also added, “For years, chipmakers have used SRAM on processors, but as chips grow smaller, SRAM is having a hard time keeping up. Problems are cropping up with current leakage and designers would like to use eDRAM, which requires fewer transistors and is less leaky.”

itwire: The GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade organisation for mobile operators, aims to get cellphones being used to make payments at the point of sale, worldwide.
The move follows the GSMA’s program - announced last year - to define a common global approach to enabling near field communications (NFC), the radio technology used to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. “By embedding mobile contactless services such as credit and debit payments in the SIM card the mobile industry will extend the role of mobile phones in customers’ everyday lives,” GSMA says.
Fourteen mobile operators representing more than 900 million mobile users are participating in the ‘Pay-Buy Mobile’ initiative, which seeks to define a common global experience for mobile phone payments on which seamlessly interoperable services will be provided. They are Cingular Wireless, now part of the new AT&T; China Mobile; KALL; KTF; MCI; MTN; NTT DoCoMo; Rogers Wireless; Smart Communications; Telenor, TeliaSonera; Telecom Italia; Turkcell, and Vimpelcom.
GSMA says that, whilst various forms of mobile payment trials and services have been announced, “this is the first truly global approach to facilitate payment by mobile.”
Secure, transparent mobile payments will be made using a SIM/Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) card in mobile phones plus contactless/NFC technology. “The result will be an interoperable and transparent service for mobile customers, financials institutions and the banks,” the organisation says.

bbc: Exquisite colour images of the Martian surface give a tantalising glimpse into the Red Planet’s watery past.
Shots of the deep valley Candor Chasma show light coloured areas of rock where water could have flowed.
These “haloes” surround fractures in the Martian bedrock which provide a promising target in the search for evidence of past life on the planet.
The images, published in Science journal, were taken by a camera aboard Nasa’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
“It lends support to the idea that a substantial body of groundwater existed on Mars in the past and may still persist to the present day,” said Professor Stephen Clifford of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas.
“The fact that there is such persuasive evidence of joints and fractures in the crust also suggests that this groundwater had the ability to flow enormous distances.”
The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRise) camera started its surveys in November 2006, eight months after Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) entered orbit around the Red Planet.
It is best known for capturing stunning images of Nasa’s robot explorers Spirit and Opportunity as they surveyed the planet from the ground.
Clay-like minerals are found in the Red Planet’s Mawrth Vallis region
Nasa has recently admitted that some of the detectors on the camera are starting to fail.
The newly analysed images were taken last year. They show a snapshot of conditions in Candor Chasma, an area of the great Martian rift valley Valles Marineris.
This deep gash, the length of the United States, is up to seven times deeper than the Grand Canyon in places.
The images show a hilly landscape composed of alternating bands of light and dark coloured rock, suggesting the layers were deposited by regular cycles of water, wind or volcanic activity.

tmcnet: As search services on mobile devices take the center stage at the ongoing 3GSM World Congress, Microsoft has decided to add its own color to the show by unveiling three new Windows Live services, including “Live Search for Windows Mobile,” “Live Search for Java” and “Windows Live for Windows Mobile.”
While the first two services offer advanced local search and mapping, “Windows Live for Windows Mobile” can be used for email, messaging, and search.
According to the company, the Live Search client applications facilitate easy and fast searching of local listings and maps for the users. In addition to this, Microsoft - is also introducing some new features in a bid to capture the customers. For example, the category-based search option removes the necessity of keying in the text in the mobile. There is also an option called “map all results” which groups several listings on same map, aerial imagery and local traffic status. This service is currently available only in selected U.S. cities. Live Search for Windows Mobile also includes GPS integration, satellite imagery and a facility to send search results to another device.
Based on location, users can also perform search operations based on categories such as restaurants, hotels and accommodations and shopping. The services provide easy options to find locations that include address and telephone details. Users can also store various search results such as map directions to or from, map all locations, or search nearby. Other services like placing a phone call or save to contacts are also available.
