indianexpress: PUNE’s crumbling infrastructure is the greatest leveller for the citizens, activists, film stars, ministers and visiting foreign dignitaries.
Now, a Marathi film —Raj ka Ran — portrays the big city problems created by bad politics. The film has liberal doses of Pune’s dug-up roads, traffic chaos, wheezing PMT buses and the Pune Municipal Corporation’s general body hall.
Directed by Pramod Joshi and produced by Chandrakant Behere, the Rs 50-lakh film which stars Sachin Khedekar, Mrunal Kulkarni, Vikram Gokhale and Sandeep Kulkarni also has familiar faces from Pune’s political arena. For, acting in important roles are BJP MLA Girish Bapat, Congress spokesperson Dr Satish Desai and former mayor Shantilal Suratwala.
The number game, the politics for getting the mayor’s post and the standing committee chairmanship along with strategies adopted by politicians form the film’s plot. Also thrown in are references to Pune’s development plan, Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) scam and the ULC scam.
BJP’s city unit president Girish Bapat plays chief minister, Desai, who is co-opted member of the Pune Municipal Corporation, is Pune’s Mayor and Congress leader Suratwala plays a dubious corporator who votes against the party and gets killed in the bargain.
Behere wanted the “reality element” and approached the politicians. Desai says it was not difficult to play his rival’s junior. “In the movie, Bapat is the high command and I pictured him as MP Suresh Kalmadi, so my role was easy,” says Desai.

indianexpress: * On January 21, District Superintendent of Police (Pune rural) Vishwas Nangare Patil checked out 35 lodges on Sinhagad road; he found 102 couples who had taken rooms there. Among them were at least eight former bar dancers who had taken up prostitution as their mainline activity following the dance bar ban.
* On January 23, Nangare Patil raided Golden Dream bar at Wadgaon Maval on Mumbai-Pune highway which was operating as an “illegal dance bar-cum pickup joint”. The 11 prostitutes arrested that day were former bar dancers.
* On February 4, the DSP raided a farmhouse in Mantarwadi — this time the target was a tamasha theatre. A total of 21 girls, some of them as young as 12 and 13 years old, were picked up. Clearly, the farmhouse was doubling up as prostitution den.
Post dance bar ban in the state, the police in Pune is facing a new challenge in the form of well-organised flesh trade rackets mushrooming in rural outskirts of Pune.
These rackets have been operating under various garbs — entertainment shows and musical performances in bars and hotel permit rooms; in folk art theatres, they took on the label of tamasha. According to the police, helping this thrive to a large extent is the disposable income that is available with youngsters in Pune.
“Earnings of people in the city have increased considerably with its emergence as an IT destination. Residents of the city go out of the city in search of ‘fun’ as chances of running into acquaintances get minimised. With in the fringe areas increasing due to the emergence of industrial estates and SEZs, farmers too are flush with liquid cash,” he told Pune Newsline.

indianexpress: THE Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) kickstarted its participatory budget exercise for 2007-08. Municipal Commissioner Nitin Kareer on Saturday visited four zonal offices—Dhole Patil ward office, Ghole Road ward office, Kasba Peth ward office and Tilak Road ward office to consider suggestions and objections from citizens.
Kareer said citizens can give written applications suggesting developmental works in their wards to the extent of Rs 15 lakh. The application forms which include space for name, address and other details are available at all 14 ward offices. The form also explains how citizens can make suggestions for development work, based on which they can give their own suggestions. “These applications should be submitted at the ward offices in the next 15 days,” he said.
A meeting will then be conducted between the civic administration and citizens to finalise the suggestions and prioritise the works.
The civic administration will have a temporary budget for four months due to the civic elections. Kareer said efforts will be made to implement citizens’ suggestions through the temporary budget.
To help citizens keep a follow-up on the works suggested by them, Kareer said a time-table of tenders, work order and deadlines will also be released along with the budget.
Meanwhile, the citizens’ demands and suggestions loomed large on adequate and regular water supply, expediency in road widening and laying of storm water drains among others

abcnews: Linkscanner Pro does a superb job of ferreting out sites defaced with dangerous hacker code, but for complete antiphishing protection, you’ll still need a second program, such as the free Netcraft toolbar.
Linkscanner Pro overlays its ratings atop Google, Yahoo, and MSN search results; the only tool we reviewed that worked with Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer; offers some configuration; is a standalone application, not a plug-in, that works with your browser; allows you to view site content without the malicious code installation.
Linkscanner Pro missed some suspected nonexploit-hosting phishing sites in our tests; help and support should be available in the program not just on the Web site.

washingtonpost: Five science satellites blasted off on a single rocket into a golden sunset Saturday on a mission to figure out the source of powerful geomagnetic substorms in the Earth’s atmosphere.
The launch at 6:01 p.m. from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station came a day after it was scrubbed Friday after strong upper winds forced officials to wait 24 hours, said Rani Gran, NASA spokeswoman.

Scientists hope the $200 million Themis mission unravels the mystery behind the storms that can damage communications satellites, disable power grids and shoot high levels of radiation down on spacewalking astronauts and airplane passengers flying over northern latitudes.
Scientists believe they also periodically intensify the spectacular light shows seen in the northern lights, or aurora borealis.
“For 30 years, people have tried to understand what causes the onset of these substorms,” said Vassilis Angelopoulos of the University of California, Berkeley, principal investigator for the Themis mission. “Finding out the origin … has been so elusive.”
It is the most probes NASA has ever launched on a single rocket. However, last year a joint venture of Taiwan and the U.S. National Science Foundation launched six weather microsatellites on one rocket.
