indianexpress: Nearly three months from now, consumers in the Thane-Belapur belt will soon get relief from load shedding with the region set to be the first to follow Pune’s model of roping in private captive power plants (CPPs) to meet the power shortage. Industry representatives have already started the process by meeting senior officials of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) on Monday to chalk out an action plan.
“We are now working out the details and will come up with a proposal within two-three days for implementing the model. We want to proceed as fast as possible,” S L Patil secretary general of the Thane-Belapur Industries’ Association that represents over 3,500 industrial units in the area, said after the meeting in Mumbai. The area requires 170 MW of energy for its industrial units and experts are now working out details of the power shortage that needs to be met through captive power plants.
The region has a large number of industries with captive power plants and also has low transmission and distribution losses, that makes it ideal for the CPP model, experts say. The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), which initiated the no load shedding model in Pune, is providing technical expertise to draw up the plan.
However, experts warn that there is a long road ahead before the model can be implemented fully in the Thane-Belapur belt. “If things move fast, it can be done within three months. The Pune model has debugged everything but a lot of things have to be done before it can be started. The MERC has to put a notice and a public hearing has to be conducted to get suggestions from the public,” architect of the Pune model Pradeep Bhargava said.

indianexpress: With an aim to boost the number of Indian students and securing better international relations through education and research collaborations with Indian institutions, the Education UK Exhibition will be back in Pune on February 21, after a gap of five years, providing students information on higher studies in the UK.
The exhibition will be held at Hotel Le Meridien from 11 am to 7 pm. Aspiring students will have an opportunity to interact with representatives of 45 UK institutions under one roof, and seek information about all aspects related to studying there.
“Indians occupy a significant portion of the international student population in the UK, with over 23,000 Indian students at present. Of the total 19,221 student visas granted to Indians every year, West India alone accounts for 40 per cent, or 7749 visas,” said Suchita Gokarn, head of Education UK (Western India).
Among the biggest draws are subjects like business and management, IT and engineering, law and even upcoming courses like physiotherapy and other paramedical courses. “Students are also attracted by the fact that the courses are of shorter duration,” said Gokarn.
With a growing global market and competition from other countries like France, the UK has introduced various schemes like the Post Graduate Scheme, Fresh Talent in Scotland, and so on, which allows students to stay on and work after completing their course.

indianexpress: Taking stock of the reduction in seats during the recently-concluded Municipal Corporations and Municipal Council elections, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed central observers to oversee the polls to decide 27 zilla parishads and 310 panchayat samitis in the state scheduled to be held on March 11. This is the first time that the Congress is sending observers from Delhi for local elections.
A Congress leader said AICC took the decision to ensure that differences between the local and state leadership did not affect party’s poll prospects.
Till now, the AICC had depended on reports submitted by local party units and Pradesh Congress Committee observers to ascertain responsibility of the party’s performance — good or bad — in local body elections. However, party leaders at various levels indulged in a blame-game prompting the AICC to decide to monitor the poll situation.
Moreover, the AICC has been worried about the differences between the party leadership at the district and state levels which came to the fore during the elections, according to sources.
However, central observer Shakeel-Uz-Zaman Ansari — monitoring the poll process in the Amravati district — asserted that the AICC’s decision of appointing its own observers was because there was little time left to select candidates. “Besides, the zilla parishad and panchayat samiti elections are important in a democratic set-up. The Congress wants to ensure that every section of the society gets proper representation,” he said.

indianexpress: A construction labourer was killed while another was injured when a diesel-operated trolley carrying construction material to the eleventh storey of an under-construction building on Alandi Road came crashing down.
The mishap took place around 11 am at Hariganga township being developed by the Goel-Ganga group on Monday morning. The trolley fell directly onto a truck parked on the ground and injured another labourer who was caught unawares. The deceased was rushed to Sassoon General Hospital by another labourer Kishan Thakur but proclaimed dead before arrival.
The police has identified the deceased as Mallesh Ramlu Dhangar (20), from Andhra Pradesh. The identity of the second labourer could not be ascertained till late in the evening.
According to the police, Dhangar was operating the trolley and standing inside it when it developed a snag and collapsed killing him on the spot. Eyewitnesses said the trolley came hurtling down the moment it reached the eleventh floor because it was overloaded.
Goel-Ganga group general manager (technical) Suresh Moorjani said, “It was an accident. The lever of the load that supported the trolley broke while it was moving upwards resulting in the tragic collapse. Dhangar was wearing safety headgear and had even tied himself with a safety rope but the sheer force with which the trolley came down pushed him to death.”

itwire: Rumours abound that Apple is preparing to launch a new, intermediate-sized MacBook as well as a sub-notebook model.
Apple’s range currently consists of the 13in MacBook (with either a 1.83 or 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo CPU) and the 15 and 17in MacBook Pro (with 2.33 or 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo CPU).
The MacBook Pros also include more memory, higher-performance graphics and (depending on the stock configuration selected) bigger hard disks and faster optical drives.
A 15in MacBook could either replace the existing black MacBook ($2399) or sit between it and the entry-level MacBook Pro ($3199). While there’s a big enough price gap to accommodate another model, it’s not obvious how it could be configured to maintain the separation between the regular and Pro models.
Presumably FireWire 800, ExpressCard/34 and the illuminated keyboard would remain exclusive to the Pro models. But what about the graphics controller? Apple’s use of the Intel GMA 950 controller on the MacBooks has been criticised, but other vendors use it at a 1440 x 900 resolution so we suspect Apple will stick with it for the 15in model. This would retain a very clear distinction between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.
The trick for Apple is to discourage as many potential 15in MacBook Pro buyers as possible from moving down to the cheaper and presumably less profitable 15in MacBook, while at the same time capturing the extra dollars from MacBook buyers that want a larger screen but aren’t prepared to pay for a MacBook Pro. Changing only the screen size would be the best way of achieving these aims.

techtree: According to reports, Microsoft has now released the public beta of its MSN Soapbox video-upload service, which is being seen as a rival to Google’s YouTube service.
Last year, in the month of September, the company had made the beta available on invitation only basis in the US. However, now it is open to all, and those interested can test the service by visiting the site (http://soapbox.msn.com).
Soapbox, a part of Windows Live, allows users to upload, discover, and share personal videos with the Soapbox community, and others around the world. It provides users with a number of benefits such as single-step uploading, background server-side video processing, and acceptance of all major digital video formats; video browsing spanning 15 categories, plus RSS feeds; and participation in the Soapbox community, with the ability to rate, comment on, or tag videos viewed, etc.
Interestingly, Soapbox allows users to simultaneously watch videos and browse for new ones on the same screen. Besides, all users can view Soapbox videos, but those with a Windows Live ID can comment on and upload new videos.
In order to compete with rivals such as Google and Yahoo!, Microsoft has been assembling a raft of Web-based services since November 2005. The company claims to have invested a significant amount of money in its Web efforts.
Though many believe that Live services will replace Microsoft’s MSN branded services, the company continues to maintain MSN as a site, where it offers entertainment content, which may explain why it branded Soapbox with the MSN name rather than Live. The Live moniker refers more to actual services such as Windows Live e-mail, instant messaging, and search.
