indianexpress: When it comes to grabbing plots for development, land sharks will stop at nothing, not even a crematorium. In Wadgaon Maval, a village some 40 km from Pune on Mumbai-Pune highway, part of the land where the villagers cremate their dead has been encroached upon, divided into plots, sold and three commercial buildings have come up on it.
Residents moved the Bombay High Court which ordered that the land be cleared but the government machinery, despite the directive, has done nothing. Now, the villagers have formed a Smashan Bhoomi Bachao Samiti and threatened a hunger strike if the High Court’s order is not implemented.
Property number 268 in Wadgaon Maval gram panchayat records, comprises some 30 gunthas on the Mumbai-Pune highway. A Maruti temple, a dharmashala and village crematorium are located on this land. “Gram panchayat records show the existence of the crematorium on the land even before 1922,” said former sarpanch Sopanrao Mhalaskar.
In 1988, 17 gunthas of the land was occupied by a resident of Wadgaon Maval who carved out small plots and sold them. Today, three commercial buildings stand on the land. “As per the current market value, the land is around Rs 34 lakh,” said Mhalaskar.
“The hunger strike is the only way to fight the encroachment on public property. In 2004, when the Bombay High Court ordered the district collector to remove unauthorised constructions on the property, we thought we had won. However, those orders are yet to be implemented, “ said Mhalaskar who is also the chairman of the samiti.

indianexpress: Over three million people in India require revision joint replacement surgery to replace artificial joints that usually last 10-15 years. Technically difficult and more complex than the first time surgery, an expert in the field and founder-president of the Asia Pacific ArthroplastySociety (APAS) Dr W K Chung from the Delta Group, Australia conducted a training programme for Indian surgeons in Pune.
The revision arthroplasty conclave concluded in the city on Tuesday.
This conclave was attended by over 60 renowned orthopaedic surgeons from across the country. The two-day conclave was jointly organised by Dr Sachin Tapasvi, joint replacement and arthroscopy surgeon, Jehangir Hospital and Dr Parag Sancheti, joint replacement surgeon, Sancheti Hospital. The objective of the conclave was to share special techniques of hip and knee revision surgery and promote knowledge and practice of hip and knee revision arthroplasty (joint replacement) with Indian orthopaedics.
Dr Chung conducted the programme for the Indian surgeons and a total of five surgeries were performed during the conclave to help participants understand the techniques. Chung spoke on the Core Principles of Hip and Total Knee Revision and Special Revision Techniques, he also pointed out that India and China would be facing the bulk of such surgeries in the next five years.

indianexpress: If Pune’s bad air has been a cause for concern, here is a new health hazard that has cropped up in this IT and manufacturing hub of Maharashtra: Electronic waste. Preliminary findings of a study — the first-of-its-kind — conducted to assess the electronic waste generated due to obsolete computers, mobile phones, televisions and refrigerators in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad show that the city churns out over 2,500 tonnes of electronic waste every year.
The draft report of the study, funded by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will be released next week.
“The study has been going on for some time and people now appreciate that electronic waste is an important subject. Proper management of the waste is essential,” MPCB regional officer Ajay Deshpande said.
The high quantum of electronic waste generated is a cause for concern as it contains toxic materials and metals like mercury, lead and cadmium that are hazardous to health. After studying the report, MPCB will draw up methods for effective waste management in the region.
However, unlike Mumbai and Delhi, where breaking down and processing of the waste generates hazardous effluents, the city escapes serious harm as most of the waste is packed off to Mumbai. “The model followed in Pune is that the waste is sent to the nearest (processing) market in Mumbai. There is no breaking down or disassembling in the city,” Amit Jain of IRG Systems South Asia Private Limited (IRG-SSA), which conducted the study, said.

indianexpress: The standing committee on Monday approved a tender worth Rs 105 crore submitted by Nagpur-based SMS Infrastructure for two riverside roads—the phase I from Shivne to Mhatre bridge along the Mutha river and the phase II Sangamwadi to Kharadi Road along the Mula river. The tender amounts to 10 per cent of the Rs 1,200 crore annual PMC budget.
Both roads were proposed in the 1987 development plan and have been pending for the past 20 years. The PMC has set June 2008 as the deadline for the completion of the roads. However, in a letter dated February 8, 2007 executive director of SMS Infrastructure Dilip Surana has said it may not be possible to start work immediately. “The deadline of the project will have to be extended,” said Surana.
The reasons: The PMC has not acquired land in several stretches where the roads are to come up. Moreover, one km of the roads’ alignment passes through defence land. “The plant and other machinery will be brought and work will begin only after sufficient stretch is available (for construction),” the letter states. Riverside dumping is also a problem, Surana said. The two monsoons (June 2007 and June 2008) will also take away four months of work, he added.
The 21.60 km-long and 24 mt to 30 mt-wide road will be four-laned with dividers, footpaths, cycle tracks, jogging tracks. It will be the nearest link to the Mumbai-Bangalore national highway, Dehu Road easterly bypass and Nagar Road and the closest route from Ambegaon Khurd, Wadgaon Budruk, Dhayari, Warje, Karvenagar and Kothrud to the eastern side.

indianexpress: Consider this. There are 634 people working on a daily-wage basis with the Pune Municipal Corporation. And despite having worked for the civic body for over 12 years, all these workers have still not been taken on the rolls.
Worse, civic administration has started issuing notices asking them to accept the facility of a fixed consolidated amount per month within 15 days. The notice was issued to 24 physically challenged workers and will be issued to others soon.
According to the Industrial Act, employees are taken on the roll after working with an organisation for two years. But a directive by the Supreme Court also mentions that it is not mandatory for the municipal corporation to take daily-wage workers on its pay roll.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, an employee said: “We were promised of permanent posts by the civic officials, but no measures have been taken as yet.”
The daily wage workers get paid between Rs 150 to Rs 300 in various civic departments. “If we agree to a lumpsum amount per month, we will be paid just Rs 2,500,” he said.

indianexpress: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s General Body on Tuesday approved the proposal of setting up an English medium school in the building at Daruwala pul where currently an Urdu school is being run by Anjuman-e-Faisal Education Society. The decision was taken after the trust’s contract for rent expired. The building also houses the Prabodhankar Thackeray School.
The existing building will be reconstructed by Thermax company. The students of both schools will be accommodated in other PMC schools.
The Standing committee also approved the proposal of pay and park for four-wheelers at the Fergusson College Road, Jungli Maharaj Road and Tilak Road. The parking will be at Rs 5 per hour.
The committee members also approved a proposal to begin land acquistion at the Taljai hill for the proposed ‘oxygen park’. The acquistion process which began in 2003 came to a halt after objections were raised by politicians.

itwire: Want to run more than one copy of Windows on your PC, or run an older version while Vista happily hums on your new machine? Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2007 has been four years in the making, but it’s finally available as a free download - and new free Vista migration tools have appeared too.
Remember Connectix? Their ‘Connectix’ webcam business was ultimately sold to Logitech, while their Connectix Virtual PC software was sold to Microsoft in February 2003. Not long after that, Microsoft release Virtual PC 2004 – and since then, everyone’s been waiting for an upgrade, while VMware and XEN have since dominated the virtualization space.
Now Microsoft is back with all guns firing, continuing to make Virtual PC 2007 free as they did with the SP1 version of with Virtual PC 2004 last July, with the new version available as a free download from Microsoft’s website to boot.
Microsoft has new Vista migration tools available for free download too, including one for businesses that helps them evaluate their existing PC fleets, another to test application compatibility and yet another to help businesses deal with the management of product keys and product activation for large number of computers many IT departments in large businesses need to manage.

itwire: AMD continues its cold war with Intel, releasing two cooler, low-watt processors along with another dual-core power house.
The single-core, 45-watt Athlon 64 3500+ and 3800+ processors are not new models, but they’ll now be made using the 65-nanometer manufacturing process as part of AMD’s energy efficiency drive. They’re accompanied by the 3GHz dual-core, 125-watt Athlon 64 X2 6000+, made using the older 90-nanometer manufacturing process.
The quieter, cooler chips are specifically targeted at small form factor designs such as lounge room-based Home Theatre PCs. They’re expected to be immediately available in the channel and from OEMs including Alienware, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Systemax and Voodoo.
The announcement follows AMD’s recent release of dual-core Opteron server processors which also offered low-watt options. A recent study cited by AMD found US data centers annually consume the output of five 1000 megawatt power plants.

technewsworld: Microsoft has released a second service pack for its enterprise-level SQL Server 2005 database software, which emphasizes integration with Vista and the company’s upcoming Longhorn server. SP2 advances “the evolution of the data platform vision,” said Francois Ajenstat, director of SQL Server marketing at Microsoft
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has released Service Pack 2 (SP2) for SQL Server 2005, making the software giant’s flagship database system compatible with its newest operating system and Office 2007.
The release is the second major update the company has issued for its enterprise grade database.
In addition to integrating SQL Server with the Vista operating system and with Office 2007, SP2 provides tools for several manageability improvements, including specific customer-requested changes in database maintenance plans and management reports, and a new copy database wizard, according to Francois Ajenstat, director of SQL Server marketing at Microsoft.
SP2 advances “the evolution of the data platform vision,” Ajenstat told TechNewsWorld, “by delivering information to where users want it. We’re bringing BI (business intelligence) to where the users live.”
SP2 has improved data mining for use within Excel 2007 and Visio 2007, the company said. It also provides integration with the Report Center to enable the consumption of SQL Server data within SharePoint. Finally, it includes support for Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) in the database’s Report Builder feature
