indianexpress: AN anonymous call to the station master of Mulund railway station on Thursday evening which claimed there was a bomb on the Pune-bound Deccan Queen turned out to be a hoax.
With the recent Samjhauta Express blasts that claimed 68 lives fresh in their minds, the authorities halted the train at Kalyan station at 6 pm.
The railway police, along with the bomb squad and sniffer dogs, searched it. However, it turned out to be a hoax and the train was allowed to leave Kalyan station at 7.30 pm. It arrived at Pune station at 10.15 pm, one hour and 45 minutes late.
“The Mulund station master received an anonymous call claiming there was a bomb on the Deccan Queen. The control room was immediately informed, and it was decided to halt the train at Kalyan. We conducted a thorough check of the train to avoid any possible mishap,” said Srinivas Mudgerikar, chief public relations officer (Central Railways).
“The Government Railway Police, assisted by the Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad and dog squads, searched the train,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Ramrao Pawar (Railways).
Commuters were first asked to alight with their luggage and later asked to board the train with it. “What’s the point of such a search if you are letting people get down with the luggage and allowing them to board the train with it,” said Nitin Arekar, a passenger.

indianexpress: PUNE’s attempts to fix its crumbling infrastructure got a big fillip with the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) agreeing in-principle to provide the Pune Municipal Corporation with Rs 1,000-crore loan at 1.5 per cent interest rate. The proposal that has been caught in local political wrangles for nearly a year-and-a-half, took a step ahead with municipal commissioner Nitin Kareer agreeing to avail the loan at a meeting with JBIC officials in New Delhi on Thursday.
In addition to the Rs 1,000-crore loan, the bank has also agreed to make available funds for improving the water network in the city. A Japanese delegation will soon be visiting the city to work out the modalities and finalise the plans.
The project - Integrated Project for Pune Redevelopment - will include development works in four fields: Transport, river, environment and tourist spots. (See box)
Earlier, the JBIC had proposed to the Centre that it was willing to issue a soft loan to the cities at a low rate of 1.5 per cent for executing environment-friendly projects and Pune was among one of the cities selected under the project.
The JBIC loan proposal has been mired in controversy right from the beginning when the municipal administration sent the proposal to the State government without the consent of the general body. The State in turn forwarded it to the Centre, but the mayor objected to it. It was sent back to the PMC for reconsideration and finally it got the general body approval and in March 2005, the State government also cleared the loan proposal.

indianexpress: TWO-and-a-half-year-old Muskan was too shy to walk up and take the gift from Denise Wilson. Coaxed by her teachers, she took a few steps, accepted her present and a smile broke out on her face.
Muskan is among the 60 children from the slums in Yerawada who will benefit from the community learning centre at Panchshil Nagar which will impart special classes in English, Maths and values. The centre, also called Muskaan, was inaugurated by the UK-based company National Grid in association with Zensar Foundation as part of their corporate social responsibility on Thursday afternoon. The children belong to Akanksha Foundation, an NGO that works to provide better lives to underprivileged children.
The British company, a global utility organisation working in the fields of electricity and gas, has partnerships with its key Indian suppliers—Zensar Technologies, TCS and Wipro. It donated 40,000 pounds for Muskaan raised through two charity dinners held in London.
National Grid, which conducts such initiatives through Global Spirit, plans to help a Bangalore-based school too.
“This is the first time that National Grid is undertaking such a charitable activity in another country, besides the UK and the US. We hope to be a part of many more such social initiatives in India,” said Wilson, National Grid’s director of shared services.

indianexpress: TO make Maharashtra a premiere investment destination and to push its growth rate into double-digit figures, the State government will roll out a slew of new policies for different sectors within the next six months. While textiles, agro processing and retail policies will be framed for the first time, a separate policy on infrastructure to address concerns of all industries will also be rolled out.
“All policies are in discussion stage and two policies will be announced by June,” industries secretary V K Jairath said on Thursday.
He said the State was looking at textile sector to provide large-scale employment. “Most states do not have a textile policy. If we have a Rs 1,000 crore investment in textiles, over 65,000 jobs can be created,” Jairath said.
The textile policy will focus on creating infrastructure and getting cutting edge technology to the State besides upgrading technical skills of the workers through proper training. “One of the concerns is getting the right people for the right jobs. A major challenge will be getting people ready for jobs that will come in the next 2-3 years,” he said.
The government is also looking at drawing up the agro processing policy in tandem with retail. While the agro policy will deal with providing skill sets and scientific training to the farming community, the retail one is seeking to establish supply chains with huge employment potential and rural marketing

indianexpress: THE Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has demanded explanation on the alleged misuse of the Annabhau Sathe Samaj Mandir being run by former corporator V R Shinde under the name of Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Smarak Kruti Mandal trust. It has been brought to the notice of PMC that the trust charges money from the state government’s Integrated Child Development Scheme which is running an Anganwadi at the community hall.
As per rules, a community hall is available free of cost for organisations and even individuals to run community programmes.
Deputy municipal commissioner (Urban Community Department) Ashok Kalamkar said that he had received complaints about the violation and therefore sought an explanation. “The trust has been allowed to run the community hall and to manage its daily affairs. But it is not supposed to charge money,” he said.
The explanation was asked last week, but Kalamkar said that till now no response has come from the trust’s side. “We will wait for another week and then seek further course of action,” he said. If found guilty, the PMC may discontinue the trust’s hold on the community hall.
When contacted an angry Shinde said that money is being charged for maintenance purpose. “I pay for the light bill and other needs of the anganwadi. The money is taken for cleaning of the room, repairing and painting,” he said.
The anganwadi uses the premises of the community hall from 9 am to 2 pm, after which it remains closed till the next day’s classes.
Meanwhile, the hall also houses Shinde’s family. A staircase has been constructed from the ground floor to the terrace of the community hall, where Shinde’s wife and son stay.
“It is true that part of the community hall is used for my official purpose and part for my family. But there is nothing wrong in it as the property belongs to me,” said Shinde.

indianexpress: STD XII science student Aditi is worried. With no clarity as yet on the rescheduled dates for the written papers of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination slated on March 10 and 12, her carefully timed study plan has been disrupted. “We plan our studies as per the exam dates. As it is there is tension of board exams, now this has been added to our worries,” lamented Aditi.
To make matters worse, students appearing for the Common Entrance Test (CET) for engineering and medical colleges in May will lose out on the extra preparation time.
For many like Aditi, the nail-biting wait for the rescheduled dates has been prolonged. The Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court, hearing a writ petition on the matter, has adjourned the hearing till February 27. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education had earlier announced that it would reschedule the written papers to be held on March 10 and 12, in view of the Zilla Parishad elections, which are slated on March 11.
Meanwhile though, a writ petition was filed by a citizen against the Election Commission demanding that the Zilla Parishad polls be postponed since they clashed with board exams. The Court accordingly issued orders to the Board to present its stance in a hearing at Aurangabad on Thursday.

techtree: According to reports, Google is unveiling a package of communications and productivity software today, which is aimed at businesses that rely on Microsoft products for those functions.
The package, called Google Apps, features e-mail, calendars, instant messaging, and talk applications, as well as a word processor and a spreadsheet.
And unlike Microsoft’s products, which reside on PCs and corporate networks, Google Apps will be delivered as services accessible over the Internet, with Google storing the data, and that will allow businesses to offload some of the cost of managing computers and productivity software.
Speaking on the occasion, Dave Girouard, Vice President and General Manager, Google Enterprise, said that businesses are looking for applications that are simple and intuitive for employees, but that would also offer security, reliability, and manageability. And for corporate technology staff, they think that this will be a very refreshing change.
Google also said that the Google Apps package, which is based on products like Gmail, has been available on free trial since August last year, and is supported by advertising. It has been used by thousands of businesses, educational institutions, and other organizations.
Meanwhile, the company will continue to provide the extended bundle of software free to businesses and educational institutions. However, it will also offer businesses additional e-mail storage and customer support for an annual fee of $50 (Rs 2,250) per user through its fee-based version, called Google Apps Premier Edition.
