Labour dept acts, six boys rescued from hotels

indianexpress: FOUR months after the ban on child labour came into force in the country, government authorities and two non-governmental organisations in Pune rescued six child labourers, between 7-14 years of age, who were working in four hotels in the Nagar Road-Wadgaonsheri area on Friday.

In a quick 45-minute raid, a task force comprising officials from the labour department, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Labour Welfare Office, and volunteers from two child rights’ groups, rescued the boys from four hotels — Tulsi Fast Food, Rasika Pure Veg, Sainath Tea Stall, and Rupesh Kumar Patel Tea Stall — situated along Nagar Road. The children were later taken to the Ramwadi police chowki for completing the necessary formalities.

The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act that became effective in October prohibits employment of children below 14 years of age in eateries and households and makes them liable to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000.

Many hotels in the city and dhabas in the fringe areas along the highways employ child labour.

Friday’s task force was led by the Assistant Labour Commissioner RM Parshetty, and comprised government labour officers VC Panvelkar and AG Patil, shop inspectors PH Shaikh and MK Bokephode, and Pune Municipal Corporation’s labour welfare officer A Khilari. Volunteers from Action for the Rights of the Child (ARC) and Sathi were also present.

Cong fights to keep flock together in PCMC

indianexpress: AFTER suffering a humiliating defeat in the February 1 PCMC polls, the Congress party’s Pimpri-Chinchwad unit is seemingly struggling to keep its flock together. On Friday, they were forced to go into a huddle in the wake of speculation that 13 of its corporators - out of the 20 elected - were planning a change allegiance to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Azam Pansare, Pimpri-Chinchwad’s NCP chief, claimed that 13 Congress corporators were in talks with the NCP.

“They are in touch with guardian minister Ajit Pawar,” he said.

After a 45-minute meeting at a Chinchwad hotel, Congress leaders put on a brave face insisting that they were united. Unit president Shrirang Barne told Newsline that no corporator was leaving.

“The NCP is trying to create a conducive atmosphere for itself in the polls next month. But I am sure all Congressmen will see through such games,” he said.

“All 20 corporators were present at today’s meeting and have given a signed statement expressing full faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi,” he said.

Another senior Congress corporator Bhausaheb Bhoir - at loggerheads with the local leadership over the post of the unit president - also scotched rumours over the potential split. “This is impossible. It can never happen,” he said

HC turns heat on PMC after rain excuse for bad roads

indianexpress: THE Bombay High Court chastised the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) when it again blamed rain for bad road conditions in the city. Coming down heavily on the civic body, the High Court directed the PMC to prepare an action plan to ensure pothole-free roads before the monsoon.

The PMC has been given time till March 22 - the next date for hearing - to prepare an action plan and present it before the High Court.

The directives were given by a two-judge bench consisting of acting Chief Justice Hemant Gokhale and Justice Vidyasagar Kanade on Thursday during the hearing of a public interest litigation filed by Madhav Ghate.

“Even we have experienced Pune’s roads,” the judges told PMC counsel Rajesh Ketkar. They asked Ketkar as to why the civic body was not finding a concrete solution to the bad road conditions that had become an annual feature in the city.

Ketkar in his defence tried to blame rain and presented the judges with the rainfall figures of Pune. He further tried to defend his case and said potholes surfaced due to heavy rain.

However, the judges immediately reprimanded him for giving these excuses. Pointing to Kerala’s road conditions, they said in spite of heavy rain round the year, the conditions were much better in the southern state.

They said even Mumbai, that receives more rainfall than Pune, had better roads.

No vendors, beggars on walking plaza

indianexpress:  THE Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has finally pulled up its socks on the many problems that had been plaguing the city’s first walking plaza since its inception in January 2006. The plaza, which had been in a neglected state for the past few months with overflowing number of beggars and illegal street side vendors, will get a boost as the PCB is planning to bring in a host of corrective measures.

In a press release on Friday, the PCB has said that it will introduce several environment friendly measures to promote shopping. “With a view to enhance the charm and pleasure of the walking plaza, the board is taking strenuous efforts to remove hawkers from the bylanes, beggars from the footpaths and animals trotting on the roads,” PCB CEO SK Sardana said.

The board will be making special efforts to remove unauthorised vendors and beggars from the walking plaza with the aid of its ‘Nuisance Prevention Squad’ as also the civil police. Animals like camels and horses, used for joyrides, will not be allowed on the plaza.

In what will come as a relief for walkers, especially the elderly, the board is also planning to put up temporary seating arrangements on the walking plaza with the help of private sponsors.

While a slew of measures have been announced to bring back the walking plaza to its full glory, it remains to be seen how many of them are seriously implemented by the board. Also, it will be up to the PCB to ensure that breaching of the `no-driving` norm, often by the defence personnel, does not go unpunished. Either way, one will get to see this weekend.

It’s now robot vs robot

indianexpress: THE task of carrying cylinder-shaped blocks across a game field and building a V-shaped formation of ‘islands’— seems to be a mundane activity except that it will not be performed by humans but by teams of remote-controlled robots.

The act that would see teams of robots competing with each other would be a part of the the national round of the international robotics competition Robocon 2007,which will be hosted in Pune on March 2 and 3 by the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT).

The event will see 25 teams of robots vie for the top spot, controlled by their ‘masters’ - students from various colleges and technical institutes across the country, including the IIT’s.

Robocon was initiated internationally in 2002 by the Asia Pacific Broadcasters Union (ABU). The ABU comprises over 100 broadcasters from 50 countries, including Doordarshan (DD) India, which gave rise to the Robocon India event. The event is now co-hosted by MIT and DD. While only seven teams took part in the event in 2003, this number has now risen to 25 in the current year.

The winning teams in the Pune event will get to represent India at the international Robocon event to be held in Vietnam on August 26 this year. The theme for the international event will be the ‘Ha Long Bay Discovery’, based on the Vietnamese legend of the Ha Long Dragons, who landed in Vietnam to protect it from invaders.

According to legend, the dragons sent from their mouths pearls into the sea, which turned into stone islands that blocked the invaders’ boats. The competition is based on this legend, wherein the cylinder-blocks represent the pearls, from which the robots have to build the stone islands to block the “invaders”.

The duration of the game is three minutes.

Indian Brains behind Intel Tera Chip

techtree: Just recently, Intel developed a ‘Tera Research Chip’ to deliver supercomputer-like performance while consuming less electricity.

And, it was a team of Indian engineers at the Intel India Development Center (IIDC) in Bangalore that played a key role in the development of this fingernail-sized chip.

The team comprises 20 members, and was led by Vasantha Erraguntla, an Intel veteran, who contributed almost half of the work that went into the chip in terms of logic, circuit and physical design, while the rest was done at the company’s other lab located at Oregon.

Talking about the achievement, Erraguntla said it feels great to lead and be part of a team that is contributing to Intel’s global innovation and to the future of technology. The capabilities of Indian engineering talent have been established without a doubt.

The 80-core chip is the result of Intel’s “Tera-scale computing” research aimed at delivering Teraflops (trillions of calculations per second) performance for future PCs and servers. It is the world’s first programmable processor from a single, 80-core chip, using only 62 watts of electricity, less than many single-core processors today.

IIDC was set up in 1998, and is Intel’s largest non-manufacturing site outside of the US. Reportedly, Indian engineers at IIDC work on the design of chips and chip sets, reference designs, system software and packaging technologies, and have full ownership of the development of key Intel chips for the server and mobile market.

Now Order Original Software Online!

techtree: Microsoft has announced that consumers and small businesses can now order original software either on the telephone or online.

The company says that this initiative, which is aimed at providing customers with easier access to original software, has been made possible through partnerships with Indiatimes.com and Redington.

Talking about the initiative, Brian Campbell, Director - Genuine Software Initiative, Microsoft India, said, “One of the biggest blocks to using original software is lack of access, especially in a country like India with its geographical spread. The launch of this initiative, will not only provide customers with much needed access to original software, but as a filter down effect, it will also cause customers to ask for, and sellers to be more likely to provide, original Microsoft software.”

“The purchase and use of original software will allow our users to be protected from potential threats such as malware, which arise from the use of pirated software,” added Campbell.

It is learnt that Microsoft’s unique initiative to provide software online and telephonically is an attempt to educate discerning consumers about the value of original software and provide them with new channels to access it.

While buying online, customers can order retail packs of original Microsoft software from the e-shop that can be accessed at www.microsoft.com/india/original, wherein they can pay by credit card, cheque, draft, or wallet365. Moreover, customers buying through a credit card can pay in three months’ equated installments, with no interest.

And as far as buying the software on telephone is concerned, customers can call-in at and get Retail Packs of original Microsoft software delivered to their home/office. This facility is currently available in eight cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. Microsoft has plans to extend this to more cities in the next few months
