Day one of 90-day reservation regime leads to chaos at Pune railway station

indianexpress: Total chaos prevailed at Pune Railway Station on Thursday, the first day for the 90-day advance reservation facility introduced by the Ministry of Railways. Thousands of service personnel and civilians jostled with for space right through the night to confirm their reservations for journey on June 1.

The Railway Police had a tough time dealing with the milling crowds, with fisticuffs and other unruly scenes breaking out as it soon became apparent that confirmed berths disappeared minutes after the computerised reservation counters opened for business at 8 am. The worst to suffer were defence personnel who had turned up to confirm their railway warrants, with only three counters assigned to them.

Fearing the situation may get out of hand, Station Manager J M Laturkar ordered additional reinforcements of railway and military police. As it took time for the reinforcements to arrive, the situation steadily worsened with only four policemen and four general military police personnel to control the mob.

“The reservation facility for 90 days in advance started only today. Hence there is a heavy rush. Even otherwise the counters have long queues this time of the year. We have sought additional Railway Police Force (RPF) men and military police to control the situation. Instructions have been issued to the chief reservation supervisor to monitor the situation,’’ Laturkar said.

In a bid to defuse the building tension, the railway authorities took an unprecedented step by opening all 16 reservation counters — three separate counters for the defence personnel, 12 for civilians and 1 manual counter working two shifts. To beat the rush, the counters will continue to remain open for the next three days, from 8 am to 3 pm and from 3.15 pm to 10 pm.

MNS fumes at city hospital’s 15-yr-long renovation work

indianexpress: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has taken strong exception to the 15-year-long renovation and extension work going on at Kamala Nehru Hospital run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in Mangalwar Peth. The party has also threatened an agitation if the work is not expedited.

“The completion of the renovation and extension work is nowhere in sight and even after 15 years the hospital used by the poor and the needy of the city is a shabby, unclean place where the infrastructure is crumbling and even basic facilities are lacking,” said a press note issued by the MNS on Thursday.

The MNS claimed to have done a surprise check on the hospital premises recently and said there was a woeful lack of basic facilities like a lift, benches, parking lot, canteen and drinking water facilities for patients or their relatives. “There are two lifts, both not in working condition while the water taps have run dry a long time ago,” said the press note.

The survey of the hospital raised a number of other issues like lack of sufficient qualified staff- especially nurses, non-working computer facilities, and the total lack of modern amenities. “All this when the PMC was showing crores of rupees spent on the renovation and modernisation work going on for a decade and a half,” said MNS Kasba area vice president Prahlad Gawali.

Gawli further said, “If the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation can run a quality hospital like KEM, why can not the PMC do the same with Kamala Nehru hospital”. The hospital has enough space to accommodate specialised sections for treatment of heart diseases and kidney ailments, but no efforts have been made by the PMC to introduce these modern facilities.

The MNS feels the PMC could well start by setting up a well-stocked pharmacy and modern blood bank facility within the premsis of the hospital. Private companies and pharmaceuticals would be more than willing to supply medicines while the city had several voluntary organisations supply blood at subsidised rates for the poor if the PMC bothers to put in a request.

Pune’s bird flu virus lab gets Rs 2.5 cr for upgradation

indianexpress:  A year after the bird flu outbreak in the country, the avian influenza diagnostic laboratory at Aundh is all set to be upgraded on the lines of the Bhopal-based High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL) — the only laboratory in the country that can detect the H5N1 virus in birds. According to animal husbandry department principal secretary Leena Mehendale, an allocation of Rs 2.5 crore had been made to upgrade the laboratory in Pune.

At present, this is among the four regional labs — including the ones at Kolkata, Bangalore and Jalandhar — for checking and examining poultry samples for diseases. The laboratory is engaged in collecting samples from migratory birds, poultry and ducks and then testing the serum for antibodies. After the laboratory has been upgraded, scientists will be engaged in isolation of the virus, explained State Commissioner of Animal Husbandry Bijoy Kumar.

The laboratory uses the AIV AB Elisa test for the qualitative detection of antibody to the most common and prevalent avian influenza virus in chicken, turkey, geese or duck serum. The laboratory gets its samples from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Goa, Daman and Diu, and various parts of Maharashtra. “We are in a state of preparedness with a surveillance plan,” says Mehendale.

Budget irks poultry sector

indianexpress:  The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) has rued the fact that the central government failed to ban ‘forward-trading’ in maize — a crucial ingredient in poultry feed — when the budget was announced on Wednesday. While lauding the ban on forward-trading in wheat and rice, NECC’s chairperson Anuradha Desai reasoned that the trend had been responsible for a cent per cent increase in the domestic market price of maize, mainly due to manipulation by speculative traders and multinational companies.

The input cost for egg and broiler production had gone up by 50 per cent, while the poultry industry had suffered a loss of nearly Rs 10,500 crore — post bird flu, according to Desai. “Thousands of small farmers in India have lost their means of livelihood,” she said before adding that forward-trading was the second major setback.

Desai claimed this phenomenon had not only bled the industry but did not yield the desired benefits to maize-growing farmers. As for poultry farmers and consumers, even they have had no gain.

AMD Integrated Graphics Chipset

techtree: The first product since AMD’s much talked about, $5.4 billion ATI acquisition last year, has been unveiled.

At an event in San Francisco yesterday, AMD announced its new 690 chipset, calling it the company’s first hardware platform to feature an ATI graphics processor integrated into its chipset for Athlon 64 processors.

The AMD 690 chipset incorporates an ATI Radeon X1250 graphics processor to enable demanding graphics in Vista’s Aero UI (user interface) like 3D application switching.

Those users who want high end graphics can still buy a discrete graphics card.

Unveiling the new chipset, Executive Vice President of AMD’s Visual and Media Business, Dave Orton, said the 690 is not just about graphics - but about graphics and high definition video. Orton said the 690 brings to the table decoding of HD stream in real time and displaying it on the screen.

A chipset is a key link in a PC, and connects the processor with memory and input/output ports. Introducing integrated graphics means freeing PC users of the need to buy a separate graphics card.

Traditionally, AMD processors have been using integrated graphics chipsets from partners such as Nvidia. By contrast, arch rival, Intel, has been building chipsets with integrated graphics for several years.

An industry analyst though, was quick to point out that even if 690 is being touted as the first chipset to come out of the AMD-ATI merger, the design work for it had started long before the acquisition - as part of a regular partnership between AMD and ATI.

Verizon Wireless launches live cell TV

msnbc: Verizon Wireless on Thursday launched a broadcast TV service for cell phones in about 20 Midwestern and Western markets, charging $15 to $25 a month for the initial lineup from eight leading networks.

While Verizon had already said it planned to introduce the service this month, the launch provided this country’s first detailed glimpse of the features and pricing for a long-awaited next wave in cellular technology.

Notably, the launch came one day after a demonstration in New York of a planned rival broadcast service called Modeo, as well as an announcement by MobiTV, a forerunner to these new offerings, that it has reached 2 million users.

V Cast Mobile TV, delivered over a separate wireless network operated by Qualcomm Inc., requires a new handset capable of receiving the broadcast signal in addition to the regular cellular signal for phone calls and mobile Internet access.

The eight 24-hour channels are CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN, Fox Mobile, MTV, NBC 2Go, NBC News 2Go and Nickelodeon.

While most of the programming will be identical to that shown by those networks on regular TV, only some shows will be broadcast at the same time.

Japan mixes robotics with tea time

msnbc:  Japan is pretty serious about robotics. If the droids are going to fit in, they probably need to learn the Japanese custom of serving tea.

Fortunately, researchers at the University of Tokyo are exploring just that. In a demonstration this week, a humanoid with camera eyes made by Kawada Industries Inc. poured tea from a bottle into a cup.

Then another robot on wheels delivered the cup of tea in an experimental room that has sensors embedded in the floor and sofa as well as cameras on the ceiling, to simulate life with robot technology

“A human being may be faster, but you’d have to say ‘Thank you,’” said University of Tokyo professor Tomomasa Sato. “That’s the best part about a robot. You don’t have to feel bad about asking it to do things.”

Sato believes Japan, a rapidly aging society where more than a fifth of the population is 65 or older, will lead the world in designing robots to care for the elderly, sick and bedridden.

Already, monitoring technologies, such as sensors that automatically turn on lights when people enter a room, are becoming widespread in Japan. The walking, child-size Asimo from Honda Motor Co. greets people at showrooms. NEC Corp. has developed a smaller companion robot-on-wheels called Papero. A seal robot available since 2004 can entertain the elderly and others in need of fuzzy companionship.

Sato says his experimental room is raising awareness about privacy questions that may arise when electronic devices monitor a person’s movements down to the smallest detail. On the bright side, the tea-pouring humanoid has been programmed to do the dishes.
