BJP leader’s hands cut off

indianexpress:  Assailants owing allegiance to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) allegedly chopped off both hands of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Sangvi leader Shashikant Sudam Shitole on Monday morning.

In the backdrop of what the police suspect to be a fallout between NCP and BJP, Shitole lost both his hands after an unidentified group of people accosted him as he was on his way home on amotorcycle.

The 32-year-old resident of Navi Sangvi, on a bike with friend Mithun and daughter, was confronted by the assailants near Sanskrutik Lawn in New Sangavi at about 10 am. They threatened Shitole with dire consequences for working against their political interests and moments later drew out choppers and swords before striking him on the head and shoulders.

In the ensuing melee, Mithun took Shitole’s daughter and fled the spot. A bleeding Shitole was later rushed to Sancheti Hospital where doctors described his condition as critical.

Shitole had contested the elections from PCMC Ward No 91 on a BJP ticket against Prashant Shitole of the NCP and Raghunath Shitole of the Congress party. The NCP won the seat but the bitter rivalry continued resulting in Monday’s incident.

The police have arrested Vijay Jagtap and Dhananjay Dore (both 24 years of age) — both from Sangvi — in connection with the attack. They identified Jagtap and Dore as NCP workers.

Delhi, Bangalore too hosted parties, says website

indianexpress:  Even as the Pune party was busted on Sunday morning, three similar parties in Delhi, Bangalore and Chandigarh organised on the same date went undetected by the local authorities. All three parties, details of which were posted on the popular trance website www.isratrance.com, used the same modus operandi as Pune’s bash to invite youngsters for a night of trance music and more.

But the website forum on Indian trance parties was taken offline at around 9 pm on Monday, removing all details. “Sorry, this section is for moderators only,” the post on the website said.

Earlier postings on the website indicated that the ‘Psychedelic Trance’ movement - the central theme of all parties — will go underground till the heat cools off. The next outdoor ‘Psy’ party — to be held in Mumbai later this month — is also likely to be cancelled in the wake of the arrests.

The ‘Festival of Colours Holi Party’ in Pune was busted, but the ‘Rock On’ party in Delhi, ‘Holi Full Moon’ party in Chandigarh and ‘Star Trekk’ party in Bangalore organised along similar lines went on as planned.

Invites for the Pune party were sent out on February 27, to ‘renew the outdoor scene’ in the city. ‘Psy’ parties are organised either indoors in clubs and discotheques or outdoors at farmhouses where substance abuse is safer. The Delhi party was first notified on February 22 while the Chandigarh party — supposedly a 24-hour affair — was posted on March 1. Details of the Bangalore bash were put up on the portal on February 23.

Invites for all parties were similar — giving just a lineup of DJs performing at the event and no details of the venue or organisers. While none of them explicitly said that drugs will be available, posting on the forums implied the same.

The parties are publicised through the website as well as popular networking portal www.orkut.com, but details of venue and time are only sent through personal email or SMS hours before the event to maintain secrecy. A personal message to the organiser with a phone number and name through the website’s forums is enough to get an invite.

Pvt colleges willing, State pushes for one CET

indianexpress: With a majority of the private and unaided engineering institutions becoming part of the State government-conducted Common Entrance Test (CET) for engineering courses, the State Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has written to the Supreme Court-appointed Pravesh Niyantran Samiti to disallow the Association of Managements of Unaided Engineering Colleges (AMUEC) from conducting their own private CET and instead conduct one CET.

According to a Supreme Court judgement on August 12, 2005, the AMUEC conducts its own CET for engineering —the MH-ENG-ASSO-CET— and the government cannot claim seats or effect admission process in these colleges. However, of the total 162 private engineering colleges in the state, 153 have written to the State government that admission, as well as the selection procedure for their institutes would be conducted as per the CET conducted by the Government.

“When barely ten institutes have registered for the private CET, then it is in the larger interest of the students to have one single entrance test, instead of multiple ones,” said director of technical education NB Pasalkar. The DTE wrote to the Pravesh Niyantran Samiti eight days ago, requesting that AMUEC be barred from conducting its own CET.

Students appearing for CET this year will have to take a judicious approach while making the choice of colleges. While there will be a total of three rounds plus an additional round for counseling, students will not be allowed to seek admission in the next round, if they have already received the college of their choice.

In the first round, students can give up to 20 options, and will not enter the second round if they get admission into any college from the first nine on the priority list. Similarly, the second round will allow 30 options, and students getting admission into any of the first 15 will not enter the third round, which allows up to 45 options. A student who fails to secure any of the 45 options even in the third round can seek counseling in the fourth round, wherein he is allocated a college.

Optical Smart Card to replace RC book

indianexpress: With the launch of the Optical Smart Card system by the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) on March 7, motorists will no longer need to produce registration papers of the vehicle at a checking drive. The new system will enable the RTO to take a look at the soft copy of the registration certificate book stored in the optical card with the help of a reader.

The RC book and other related documents will be replaced by an e-book saved in the optical chip of the card. The New Delhi based National Informatics Centre (NIC) has designed the software called Vahan, which will help in operation of registration of vehicles.

Earlier, NIC had also designed the smart card software Saarthi incorporated in the licensing system.

Deputy regional transport officer Jeevan Bansod said the optical smart card is a value addition to the original smart card system implemented in Pune. “Whenever an erring driver is caught, the process of checking the papers becomes lengthy. With this system, the documents can be checked in seconds,” he said.

A photograph of the vehicle’s owner along with the form will also be scanned and saved in the card.

“The photograph will help check the identity of the vehicle owner,” Bansod added. The contract of producing the optical smart cards is being awarded to Shankh Technology International Ltd.

Pune under drug menace scanner

indianexpress: Saturday’s trance party raid at the foothills of Sinhagad fort has once again brought Pune under the scanner of various agencies dealing with drug menace.

Hours after the police stormed the venue at a farm near Donje village, Central Excise and Customs officials swooped down as well. All of a sudden, the city was being swamped by various agencies including the Anti Terrorist Squad, Mumbai Police and Thane police — all with a common agenda — finding out why, how and since when has Pune started playing host to such parties?

In the 1990s, ‘techno parties’ were commonly held in Koregaon Park, Wanavdi, Wagholi and Hadapsar. Patrons included foreign tourists, mostly hippies.

When the police turned the heat on, venues were shifted to remote areas on the border of the Pune and Raigad districts, and no reports of such parties were heard of for a decade.

Saturday night’s party indicates they may have returned to Pune. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sunil Phulari, though, Pune was only a last-minute option to hold Saturday’s party. “The plan was to organise the party in some other metro. But the venue was changed to Pune later on,” he said.

Three factors are responsible for the change of plan — availability of secluded areas, availability of party-goers and Pune’s geographical proximity to Mumbai: Home to many party-goers.

Online newspapers have more male readers: Survey

indianexpress: * The proportion of female readers for online edition of newspapers is considerably smaller than male readers of both English and Marathi online editions.

* The readership is more in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

* Cartoons appear to be a less frequented section of the web sites (about 0.44 per cent for English web sites, for Marathi it is zero per cent).

These are a few of the findings of a survey carried out by the Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Pune in regards to readership for online editions of newspapers. The study — conducted by Kiran Thakur, professor and head of the Department and Ujjwala Barve, lecturer — covered 1625 readers in all.

“It is a continuous process. We had done a similar study in 1998 and the reason is to see if there has been any change in the pattern of online readership of newspapers. We approached 114 newspapers for the study,” said Thakur.

The study has also established that the readership of the Marathi and English online editions is spread to over 62 countries, in addition to India.

Among other findings, it was seen that readers are interested in reading about Business and Economy (69 per cent among English readers and 55 per cent Marathi), Politics (60 per cent and 57 per cent) and Science and Technology (60 per cent and 49 per cent).

Sports news is favoured by 37 percent in both the language readers. The other element that seems to indicate the importance of local news is that 58.2 per cent Marathi readers are keen on reading news from their hometown whereas a comparatively less percentage of English newspaper readers (33.8 per cent) read news from their hometown.

Xbox 360 update blocks non-MS software

itwire:  A software update for the Xbox 360 makes it harder for users to install alternative operating systems such as Linux or run other non-Microsoft software.

Like most console manufacturers, Microsoft is believed to sell Xbox 360 consoles below cost, making up the difference on game sales. But this only works if they can be sure that only ‘authorised’ software will run.

Consequently, manufacturers design in various mechanisms to prevent the use of software from other sources. In the case of the Xbox 360, this includes signing all code with Microsoft’s private key.

But enthusiasts discovered a way of tricking the Xbox 360 hypervisor into executing unsigned code with full access to the hardware.

Microsoft’s January update to the Xbox 360 operating system update - delivered via Xbox Live and the Xbox web site - patches the ‘vulnerability’ that let the method work.

No indication was given about the nature of the update.

And so the whack-a-mole game continues.

Apple fixes QuickTime vulnerabilities, eases iTunes/Vista compatibility woes

itwire: An update to Apple’s QuickTime software patches a slew of vulnerabilities affecting Windows 2000, XP and Vista, as well as Mac OS X 10.3.9 and later. The problems it addresses are serious, as they provide opportunities for arbitrary code execution. The company has also delivered a new version of iTunes for Mac and Windows, improving Vista compatibility.

New Gizmo talks to Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger
Several of the QuickTime vulnerabilities are triggered by maliciously crafted files of various kinds. The updated routines in QuickTime 7.5.1 provide additional checking of particular file types to avoid the chance of crashes or arbitrary code execution caused by the following conditions.

Since most Mac applications would use QuickTime to handle these file types,  the update is especially important to Mac OS X users. While iTunes (see below) is the main QuickTime application for Windows, the update may be seen as less critical for users of Microsoft’s operating systems. However, a number of multimedia titles are based on QuickTime, and it is possible for any of the common multimedia file types to be associated with QuickTime player - either by the user’s deliberate action or at an application’s behest.

Verizon Wireless launches live cell TV

msnbc: Verizon Wireless last week launched a broadcast TV service for cell phones in about 20 Midwestern and Western markets, charging $15 to $25 a month for the initial lineup from eight leading networks.

While Verizon had already said it planned to introduce the service this month, the launch provided this country’s first detailed glimpse of the features and pricing for a long-awaited next wave in cellular technology.

Notably, the launch came one day after a demonstration in New York of a planned rival broadcast service called Modeo, as well as an announcement by MobiTV, a forerunner to these new offerings, that it has reached 2 million users.

V Cast Mobile TV, delivered over a separate wireless network operated by Qualcomm Inc., requires a new handset capable of receiving the broadcast signal in addition to the regular cellular signal for phone calls and mobile Internet access.

The eight 24-hour channels are CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN, Fox Mobile, MTV, NBC 2Go, NBC News 2Go and Nickelodeon.

While most of the programming will be identical to that shown by those networks on regular TV, only some shows will be broadcast at the same time.

One-third of Net users go wireless

msnbc: About one-third of Internet users in the U.S. have used a wireless connection to surf the Web or check e-mail, according to a survey released Sunday.

The survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project showed that 34 percent of Internet users have gone online through Wi-Fi service or a cell phone network, including 27 percent who have logged on from somewhere other than their home or workplace.

That’s up from February 2004, when 22 percent of Internet users said they had gone online using a wireless device.

Nineteen percent of Internet users now have a wireless network in their home. That number has nearly doubled since January 2005, when 10 percent said they had a home wireless network.

Three-quarters of the people with both a home wireless network and a laptop computer said they now use their laptop in different parts of the house.

One in four Internet users said they have a cell phone that can access the Internet, and 54 percent of those with the capability said they have used it to get online.
