Bail for all, only 6 walk free

indianexpress:Only six of the 280 in judicial custody were released from Yerawada central prison on Tuesday evening with the special court asking for surety from local residents. This decision is said to have been imposed on the basis of the Pune rural police intimation that many names and addresses of the accused were fictitious. The court had granted bail to 150 accused on Monday, while the rest were granted bail on Tuesday. The six released included two women.

“Over 50 per cent of the names and addresses given by the accused were fictitious. In the case of the accused from Mumbai, we found on a random check that eight out of 10 addresses were fake. Now, we are verifying the authenticity of more names and addresses and informing the court accordingly,” said Pune rural superintendent of police Vishwas Nangre Patil.

Scores of parents, friends and relatives were seen shuttling from Yerwada Central Prison to Shivajinagar Court arranging for the elusive surety. Most of them were finding it difficult to locate a willing relative or acquaintance in the city to give a surety. “Every single contact of ours expressed fear about coming under the police scanner,” said an anxious parent.

Aftab Khan (name changed), who had come representing a leading city hotelier whose son was in the jail, said: “We have been running from pillar to post ever since he was picked up by the police. Our lawyer has moved application and we hope that he will be released by today evening.” At the end of the day, he was not among the six to be released.

For Donje villagers, whose ancestors fought the Mughals, it’s about lost pride

indianexpress: Donje, a nondescript village, 25 km from Pune, has been driven to shame by the ‘reckless’ behaviour of one of its sons, Ramdas Hagavane who organised the all-night party in his mango orchard. Most villagers feel that one night of indiscretion has cost the village its hard-earned glory of having fought the Mughals.

Hagavane was a “lost cause” said the villagers — elders, housewives, children, and even the police patil (the village guardian). He was not staying in the village after marrying a girl against his family’s wishes. But nobody thought he would organise such a party was the common refrain of the village of around 3,500 people.

“It is a shame people are coming to see the telltale marks of the party at the foothills rather than look up at the imposing fort rising 800 metres above the village,” said Ankush Paigude, the village police patil for Donje and Sinhagad.

The rugged countryside surrounding Donje was the sight of a recapture of the fort by Shivaji’s men from Mughal emperor Aurangazeb’s Rajput garrison in March 1670. The local folklore tells how Maratha general Tanaji used a pet monitor lizard to climb up the wall with a rope, and launched a surprise attack during the night.

It was no different on the night of March 4 when Paigude was woken up at 2.30 am by the Pune rural police wanting to borrow his searchlight. Paigude accompanied the police to bust the party. “It would not have taken place. Sunday afternoon I checked on Hagavane’s suspicious activities at the orchard. He said he was preparing for a ‘havan’ to mark the full moon”.

PMC gets Rs 270-cr for CYG 2008

indianexpress:  Close on the heels of Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram announcing Rs 50 crore to spruce up Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi for the Commonwealth Youth Games, the city got another financial boost with the Centre clearing Rs 270 crore for improving the infrastructure.

The central steering committee under the Urban Development Department sanctioned the funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) on Monday for city development before the Youth Games in 2008.

“The funds will be utilised to improve road connectivity and traffic condition in the city,” municipal commissioner Nitin Kareer said.

The main purpose is to provide connectivity between Lohegaon airport, Balewadi, Nehru Stadium near Swargate and railway station by having road corridors.

“The funds will largely be used for road works for connecting these places.

Besides, it will also fund construction of 11 parking termini for the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project,” Member of Parliament Suresh Kalmadi said.

In addition, subways and footpaths would also be constructed. For smooth flow of traffic, the proposal aims to set up a traffic control system that includes synchronised signals and cameras.

Though the Pune Municipal Corporation has sent Rs 476-crore proposal to the Centre for improving the city’s infrastructure for the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in October 2008, only Rs 270 crore has been sanctioned till now.

Courtesy 90-day advance booking facility, Pune division rakes in Rs 2.3 crore

indianexpress:  On March 1, the Pune Railway Station had witnessed serpentine queues of passengers for booking of tickets for May in accordance with the 90-day advance reservation facility. The day not only trained the Central Railways staff to handle a big crowd but also has given them a reason to cheer.

That important day, the Pune division has been able to collect a revenue of Rs 2.03 crore as against of the usual Rs 60-80 lakh per day. According to the Central Railways spokesperson for Pune Division Y K Singh, “The revenue collected at five Passenger Reservation System (PRS) centres in the city — Pune Cantonment, Raviwar Peth, Shankarsheth Road, Deccan Gymkhana and Pune Railway Station — was around Rs 1.20 crore,” Singh said.

When the revenue collection at the 13 locations in the Pune division was compiled, the figure touched Rs 2.03 crore, Singh said. Apart from the 5 centres, Chinchwad and Khadki also fall in the city limits, which also witnessed a huge crowd.

The railway officials attribute the rise in revenue collection to the advance reservation facility, which came with the advancing summer vacations. “We had already estimated the rush in wake of the extended advance reservation facility. Apart from a few instances of fights, the day was peaceful,” said a railway official. On March 2 and 3, the collection remained as high as Rs 1.35 crore and Rs 98 lakh, respectively. By March 4, the collection returned to its routine figures.

At the Pune Railway Station, almost 16 windows were working from 8 am to 10 pm _ with an extended two hours of work. “The divisional and assistant commercial manager made rounds of the PRS centres to check the situation throughout the three days,” said an official. Around 47,000 people booked tickets on March 1 followed by 36,927 and 28,461 on March 2 and 3, respectively.

Shock over, parents chase legal eagles

indianexpress:  “Was at a party that got busted, but am clean, so don’t worry, will be home soon.”

This SMS woke up public relation executive Indrani Kaushal (name changed) in Pune on Sunday morning.

From digesting the fact that their 19-year-old son, a Bachelor of Business Administration student, had been arrested at a party they were not even aware of, to hiring a lawyer and putting together documents for the bail, the past three days have been harrowing for the Kaushals.

Standing outside the sessions court in Shivajinagar, Indrani says, “From the medical tests to taking them to Yerawada to the bail applications, nothing is clear.”

It is worse for Shukla Nag, working as a project manager at a software firm who came from Mumbai on Tuesday after getting the news of her 21-year-old son’s arrest on Monday. “He had come to Pune for the weekend and probably thought he would get out of this. When things got serious, he called me up,” she says. The shock has now been replaced by frustration at the procedural delay and anger at things not being transparent.

“My daughter did not have any drugs on her nor did she consume any. How can she be locked up? She was misguided, didn’t even know it was a rave party,” says Nagar Road resident Ajit Shelke.

Some parents have alleged that those who were hesitant to enter the party once they arrived at the venue on Saturday were actually encouraged to get in by the plainclothes police personnel there.

Vivek Sehgal, local guardian to one of the students, says his ward was picked up from the road even before he reached the venue. “His parents are in Delhi and I have left my work in Mumbai to process the bail application,” says Sehgal.
