indianexpress: Unruly Nationalist Congress Party workers attacked Hadapsar police chowki around 12.30 on Monday night leaving four police personnel including an assistant police inspector injured.
The API, Ramchandra Baburao Lonkar, was admitted to a private hospital with a fractured hand while the other three policemen who sustained minor injuries were administered first aid and sent home.
Lonkar, who is in his late 50s, is slated to undergo a surgery on Wednesday. The Hadapsar police arrested 12 persons, six each from the NCP and the Congress and charged them for rioting.
“Before I could realise what was happening, a mob of NCP workers pushed me to the ground. They kicked me and did much of the same with the other three policemen on duty. Now, I have a fractured right hand,” said Lonkar.
According to the police, supporters of victorious NCP candidate Sandip Tupe and his arch rival Amol Tupe of Congress clashed as celebrations took an ugly turn following the announcement of Zilla Parishad election results. The bursting of crackers provoked the supporters of the vanquished leading to raised tempers and soon stone pelting followed.
The Hadapsar police faced a tough time trying to control the situation and the mob could be dispersed only after reinforcements arrived.

indianexpress: The second day of protest against the hike in fees for engineering colleges saw massive protests by students of three engineering colleges. While over 500 students of the Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) and the Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology (VIIT) carried out a joint rally to the District Collector’s office, some 700 students of the Sinhagad College of Engineering (SCOE) went on strike and staged a protest outside their college in Vadgaon Budruk.
As per a notification of the Supreme Court-appointed Shikshan Shulka Samiti (SSS) dated February 9 put up on the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) website, the fee hike was to the tune of Rs 8020 for students in VIT, Rs 15,500 for VIIT students, and Rs 5,600 for SCOE.
Carrying placards and shouting slogans against the fee hike, students of VIT and VIIT started the rally at VIT College in Bibewadi and proceeded to City Pride, where the rally dispersed. Some 15 student representatives then met the deputy collector and they put forth their demands.
In a statement issued by VIT, the students have said that since the SSS was formed in 2003-04, those students who had taken admission prior to 2003 by paying fees of Rs 17,500 for a merit seat should be exempt from paying the revised fees. They have also objected to the exclusion of students admitted through the J&K and GOI quota from paying the revised fees.

indianexpress: High drama prevailed at the PCMC headquarters in Pimpri on Tuesday after photographers and cameramen were prevented from covering the mayoral elections. The PCMC security staff said they were acting on the directions of the presiding officer and the district collector, Prabhakar Deshmukh. After the election process got over, a media delegation tried to meet Deshmukh and PCMC commissioner Dilip Band to register their protest. However, when the delegation reached a hotel in Chinchwad where they were having lunch, Band and Deshmukh allegedly flared up and asked the delegation to leave immediately. Band said since the presiding officer had issued the order, there was no question of allowing them inside the election hall.
State Election Commissioner Nand Lal said it was the discretion of the presiding officer - the district collector or the municipal commissioner - whether to allow photographers and cameramen inside the election hall or not. “It is an internal meeting that elects the mayor. Hence, they were within their rights,” he told Newsline.
Meanwhile, Pimpri-Chinchwad Patrakar Sangh president Nandkumar Saturdekar said they had sent a complaint to principal secretary Jairaj Pathak and will also register their protest against Band and Deshmukh with NCP leader Ajit Pawar.

indianexpress: Sons of two former MLAs were among the eight high-profile candidates who bit the dust in the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls. And with that, the plans of former Shiv Sena MLA Kashinath Khutwad and former Congress MLA Anantrao Thopate to maintain their dominance at the grassroots level, by getting their sons elected, suffered a setback.
Vikram Khutwad, the son of former Shiv Sena MLA from Bhor Kashinath Khutwad lost in Sangamner segment of Velha Panchayat Samiti. Sangram Thopate, the son of former Congress MLA from Bhor Anantrao Thopate, lost to Ranjit Shivtare of NCP by a margin of 2,805 votes. The only consolation for Thopate is that Sangram won the election in Khanapur segment of Bhor Panchayat Samiti.
Other high-profile candidates who suffered defeat, are former Zilla Parishad president Devram Lande of Congress, Shiv Sena leader in Zilla Parishad Namdeo Tambe, NCP’s two-term Zilla Parishad member and party district unit spokesman Pandurang Pawar, sitting Zilla Parishad member of Indapur Vikas Aghadi Amol Bhise, two term Zilla Parishad member Jayashri Palande and co-operatives bigwig in Maval taluka, Sahebrao Satkar’s son Hiraman and former president of Bharatiya Janata Party’s district unit Vasudeo Kale.

techtree: Train journeys may never be the same again… Thanks to the technological advancements introduced by the Indian Railways, the world’s second largest rail network after Russia.
Amongst a slew of initiatives undertaken by the Indian Railways, the one that draws most attention is the issuing of tickets through the Internet. Although this service has been there for the past few years, 2007 onwards, the railways intend to expand the service reach to all parts of the country. As such, e-tickets will be issued through e-seva of state governments, post offices, petrol pumps, and ATMs.
And to make online reservation more accessible to customers, Indian Railways have tied up with Internet service provider, Sify, to enable customers book tickets online against cash payment.
A common Web site integrating more than 50 different Web sites of Indian Railways is also being developed, with built-in facilities like e-payment and e-tendering. A commercial portal will be developed in the next three years for yield management, especially to attract traffic for returning empties and filling up vacant seats.
Then there will be train enquiry call centers, which will start functioning in all four zones of the country from the second half of this year. By dialing the telephone number 139, passengers will be able to obtain information about arrival and departure of trains, seat availability, etc, at local call rates from any part of the country.
A proposal to provide hand held computer terminals to TTEs in reserved coaches is on the anvil. How it will work is that the TTEs will feed in the current vacancy position, coach wise and berth wise in the hand held terminals, which will be directly linked to passenger reservation system (PRS) to enable allotment of vacant berths to wait-listed passengers at ensuing stations

dailytech: Intel Corporation announced today its entry into solid state drives with the Intel Z-U130. Aimed at delivering performance and value, the drives are based on NAND flash memory with standard USB 2.0/1.1 interfaces. Intel says that the advantages of its Z-U130 over hard disk drives and removable USB storage devices are faster boot times, embedded code storage, rapid data access and low-power storage alternatives.
Solid state drives enjoy several advantages over traditional hard disk drives, such as faster start-up, faster read times, lower seek times, less power consumption, silent operation and lower weight. Solid state drives should also be more reliable as there are no moving parts involved in the device’s operation. On the flip side, magnetic-based drives may endure better after a great number of read/write cycles and faster write times. For the foreseeable future, traditional hard disk drives will also enjoy the cost advantage at large capacities.
“Solid state drive technology offers many benefits over traditional hard disk drives including improved performance and reliability,” said Randy Wilhelm, vice president and general manager of Intel’s NAND Products Group. “The Intel solid state drive technology provides robust performance, while offering Intel’s industry leading quality, validation and reliability for a wide variety of embedded applications.”
