indianexpress: THE state government on Friday announced in Mumbai that it would move the High Court with a plea to cancel the bail granted to those who had organised the rave party here. The government said it would also train police personnel in monitoring the Internet to curb drug trade.
Minister of State for Home Siddharam Mhetre, during the discussion in the Assembly on a calling-attention motion moved by Narsaiyya Adam (CPM) and others, said that 14 persons who had organised the party were arrested when the police raided the party at Donje in Haveli tehsil of Pune district on March 4. He said that 280 revellers, mainly college students, were also arrested.
He said there were three foreigners among those arrested for selling drugs and that the party had been organised by contacting people on the Internet. When Sudhir Mungantiwar and Devendra Phadnavis (both from BJP) asked the minister to devise a system to monitor the Internet, especially blogs on Orkut, the minister agreed to do so. “We have a cyber cell for which we have already purchased advanced software 15 days ago. We are planning to train at least 25 police personnel in every district on how to curb cyber crimes and how to monitor the Internet,” he said.
Mhetre said the police were not under any pressure to hush up the case and that action would be taken against the accused.
When NCP member Nawab Malik alleged that former IPS officer Rahul Sur was involved in the drug trade and should be booked, the minister said the officer had left the country 15 years ago and was residing abroad, and the government would explore the possibility of probing his actions.

indianexpress: FIFTEEN months after laying the foundation stone for their second plant in the city, INA Bearings India — it is a Schaeffler group company — on Friday inaugurated their 18,000 sq mt facility at Talegaon. Established at an investment of 40 million euros, the plant will produce precision products for the automotive and industrial sectors.
The 1 lakh sq mt area will encompass manufacturing facilities and an administration building. An engineering and test center is also being set up at the location to tailor-make solutions for the needs of Indian customers. The entire facility is set to be fully operational by 2008.
The Talegaon facility will manufacture over 40 million units of various products for the Indian market. This will include needle cages, drawn cup bearings, engine components such as roller finger follower, chain tensioner, clutch release bearing, water pump bearings as well as welded cage production. The facility currently employs 350 people.
Speaking at a function to mark the inauguration of the facility, managing director of the Schaeffler group, Maria Elisabeth Schaeffler said: “India is of great importance for us and we consider it as an economic area with future and potential. We want to contribute to and participate in the development of the promising market here.”
According to Schaeffler, Pune was the preferred destination to set up the second facility due to its economic potential, qualified and skilled manpower, competitive cost and cooperation by the authorities.

indianexpress: IN THE first step towards modernisation of the field post services of the armed forces, the first-ever field postal order service was launched in the city by Chief of Staff, Southern Command, Lt Gen Ashok Kapur. With a view to reduce hardships faced by troops and provide them with a convenient remittance service, the department of posts launched the service for fixed denomination field postal orders.
Launched in a range from Rs 2,000 to Rs 20,000, the postal orders have a low commission charge and can be enchased instantly at any of the 1.5 lakh civil or army post offices. The facility will come as a big relief for soldiers as armed forces personnel regularly remit money to their families through regular modes of a money order. However, this attracts a high commission and alternate means like bank drafts are adopted. Moreover, in forward areas, banks and financial institutions are not readily available.
Speaking on the future of field post offices, Lt Gen Kapur said that a modernisation plan was in place. “To make them more efficient, modernisation and computeristion is currently on. Soon, new services such as railway reservation, pay and allowance, mutual fund payments and telephone cards would be available through them,”he said.

indianexpress: A FOUR-MARK question, which confused Std X English medium students writing their Marathi paper on Friday, has been declared as a printing error by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. The Board has also clarified that the students will not suffer any loss as a result of this question.
The sixth sub-question of Question 2 in the paper for Marathi as a second language for the English medium was printed as follows: ‘Kasturbanni koni patra lihile va tyaat kay lihile hote?’ This resulted in confusion on whether Kasturba wrote a letter or someone else wrote a letter to Kasturba. According to a principal of a city school, the question ought to have been, ‘Kasturbanni konala patra lihile…’ (To whom did Kasturba write a letter…). The correction was received at some centres, but not all centres, the principal added.
“This was a printing error and we are looking into the matter. But the students will not suffer any loss because of this,” assured State Board chairman Vasant Kalpande. Kalpande said that no specific decision had been taken on whether students would get full marks for the question.

indianexpress: THE ganja that was sold to the revellers of the Donje rave party had been supplied from the drug storage centre-cum-packaging unit at Hadapsar where the Anti Narcotics Cell of Pune police carried out a raid on March 9 recovering 1 ton of ganja. This revelation was made by members of the cartel that operated this unit during interrogation by the ANC.
The police have arrested 13 people including two of the four drug pedlars who had been arrested by the Pune rural police on information provided by rave party organisers Dhruv Pavan Kaushal (22) and Paramjeet Singh Harcharan Singh Brar (27).
ANC in-charge Inspector Sheshrao Suryavanshi said investigations so far have revealed that a former rickshaw driver and a resident of Hadapsar whose son boasts of having political contacts acted as the ringleaders.
Suryavanshi said interrogations of the cartel members have revealed that the ganja would be procured from the North Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. “We are now trying to track down the drug traffickers from Andhra Pradesh who supplied the narcotics to the gang. We will also seek help of the police there,” Suryavanshi said.

techtree: PC gamers can soon catch popular Xbox Live gaming titles on the Windows platform…
Microsoft is combining its online console game service, Xbox Live, with the Windows platform, which will allow PC gamers compete with those playing on Xbox 360 as well.
The combined service called “Games for Windows - Live” will connect PC gamers to over six million gamers of the Xbox Live community.
According to Microsoft, this marks a major expansion of Xbox Live across multiple platforms, uniting gamers through a single identity, a single gamer tag, a single friends list, and a single list of achievements attainable on the Xbox 360 and a Windows-based PC.
Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division, said, “The benefits of expanding Xbox Live to games for Windows titles is two-fold: we are bringing together two communities that share a passion for playing online games, and we are enhancing the online experience for PC gamers who have long desired seamless game and voice connectivity - it’s a win for everyone.”
“Games for Windows - Live” service starts with the launch of the Windows Vista version of the Xbox blockbuster, ‘Halo 2,’ in May 2007, which will be followed by ‘Shadowrun’ in June, and ‘UNO’ later in 2007.
‘Halo 2′, the highly anticipated title, will enable PC gamers challenge each other in PC-to-PC multiplayer matches, and earn achievements for the first time in the “Halo” franchise, as well as communicate via voice or text with other Xbox Live or “Games for Windows - Live” members. It will be playable with mouse and keyboard or the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows.

dailytech: Dell this week announced that it will be the first manufacturer in the industry to start shipping computers with the first consumer 1 terabyte (TB) hard drive. Using the Deskstar 7K1000 drive from Hitachi, Dell will begin including the new drives in both its own line of XPS gaming systems and under the Alienware brand. Alienware Aurora and Area 51 systems will be receiving the new 1TB drives first.
According to official Hitachi specifications, the new drive is a Serial ATA 3Gbps model with a 7200 RPM spindle rate. Read time comes in at 8.5ms and write times at 9.2ms. With data densities this high, previous studies have found that data integrity may be compromised. Perpendicular hard drives will become more mainstream as capacities increase. Using perpendicular recording methods, data integrity remains high even at record breaking storage capacities.
Along with the new 1TB drive, Dell is launching a service called StudioDell, which the company calls a “video time capsule.” StudioDell will allow subscribers to upload videos, which will be stored at Dell headquarters for 50 years, so that later generations may view them. Dell even indicated that the videos will be stored on the new 1TB drives from Hitachi.
Neil Hand, vice president for Dell’s worldwide consumer marketing division said in a statement that high quality media such as HD video is becoming mainstream, making larger hard drive capacities all the more necessary. “Digital content use is exploding in the consumer market – with this 1TB hard drive, a lifetime of memories, music and other information can be made, stored and shared with others,” said Hand.

bbc: Computer game graphics could soon be much more realistic thanks to research at the University of Saarland, Germany.
At the tech-fair Cebit, a team from the university demonstrated a lighting technique, known as ray-tracing, using relatively low-powered processors.
Before now, many powerful computers were needed to generate the life-like images this technique can produce.
But the scientists have shown they can achieve the effect using custom-made chips or a high-end PC graphics card.
Graphics in computer games are typically rendered via a technique known as rasterisation which involves drawing all the elements of a scene using polygons.
The holy grail for game makers is to use ray-tracing to depict scenes far more realistically because it models the way rays of light bounce around a scene and are reflected off objects.
However the computational power needed to keep track of the light has meant that it can only be done using large numbers of dedicated machines.
You can even do reflections on reflections on reflections
Film studio Pixar uses ray-tracing to produce the images for its cartoons and Peter Jackson used the technique in the Lord of the Rings to make special effects look convincing.

bbc: The system can only route a single digital TV channel over the network
Soon you could be piping digital TV around your home via power sockets.
At the Cebit technology fair, German hi-tech firm Devolo is showing off home networking technology that can handle signals from a set top box.
While many firms are working on ways to route data via the mains power circuits in the home, Devolo is among the first to use it to send TV signals.
Further improvements to the home networking system will help it handle cable and satellite TV signals.
Although many people are connecting up all the digital devices in their home via dedicated computer cables, increasing numbers are choosing networking technology that route data via the same wires that supply electricity to each and every room.
The systems typically work using a specially adapted plug that acts as a mini-hub to route data to devices around the house.
As a data network this system can be used to stream video to devices in other rooms or to route internet-based TV to displays or gadgets.
Now Devolo has found a way to route standard digital TV signals over the same infrastructure.
“It connects to the set-top box and converts that TV signal to an IP signal,” said Andre Jansen, a spokesman for Devolo.
IP, or internet protocol, is a standard for sending data across networks.
