Congress irked as BJP bags opp leader post

indianexpress:  The appointment of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Vikas Mathkari as the leader of opposition in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has infuriated the Congress party leaders who have threatened to move court.

Member of Parliament Suresh Kalmadi said on Saturday that fellow Congress leader Aba Bagul was the right choice considering his party had 36 candidates, while — with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) support of eight candidates — they emerge as the single largest opposition with 44 corporators. “Even the district commissioner has approved the tie-up and the fact that we are the single largest opposition position,” Kalmadi said.

The BJP-Shiv Sena combine emerged as the single largest alliance with 45 seats. However, Kalmadi said the Shiv Sena went ahead with its support to the Nationalist Congress Party to win the deputy mayor post. “The BJP and Shiv Sena should be considered seperate parties, as the Shiv Sena is in rule,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bagul said the NCP had given a ‘return gift’ to the BJP-Sena combine by offering the BJP the leader of opposition post. “There is a provision in the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation act, 1949, that the single largest party after the ruling party becomes the opposition party and their leader is the leader of opposition. However, this does not seem to happen at the PMC,” he said.

PMT chief gets marching orders from State govt

indianexpress: A little over two months after C K Anil took over as Pune Municipal Transport (PMT) general manager and within a month after he brought the transport body out of the red for the first time in 30 years, the State Government issued orders on Saturday to send him back to Bihar.

The faxed order to Pune Municipal Corporation said Anil has been transferred with immediate effect but did not mention his successor. PMC officials said Anil will be asked to hand over the charge to additional municipal commissioner (Special) Mary Kerkatta. When contacted, Anil said, “I am unaware of my transfer.”

In December, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had announced in the Assembly that Anil will be sent back to Bihar after MLAs raised questions over the food poisoning incident on December 5 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex at Balewadi in which 60 children were affected. Anil was the Director of Sports then and was sent to the PMT where he took charge as general manager on December 13.

In January, he picked up the issue of failure of Tata Motors in replacing 15 faulty semi low-floor buses that were purchased in 2004 and demanded a compensation of Rs 1.58 crore as “operational loss”. The PMT committee, on Friday, authorised him to replace the 15 buses and recover compensation of

Rs 28.8 lakh from Tata Motors for non delivery of 10 low floor buses required for BRTS.

On Saturday, one of the three buses of the ten delivered by Tata Motors on Friday broke down while being taken to the regional transport office in Alandi for registration.

Khadakvasla lake wall to be repaired in fortnight

indianexpress: With this year’s monsoons just three months away, the Public Works Department (PWD) has placed the reconstruction of a damaged stretch along the Khadakvasla lake on first priority.

Last year’s rains had washed away 30 metres of the ‘retaining wall’ making travelling on the road to Sinhagad hazardous.

Another reason for the urgency is that the damaged stretch includes the popular Chowpati spot that draws the crowds even during the rains.

But senior PWD officials are so optimistic, they promise reconstruction will be completed in a fortnight.

On the other hand, if it is not finished before the monsoons’ onset in June, the Sinhagad road is likely to sink. The expenditure incurred is likely to clock Rs 15 lakh, according to the officials. The reconstructed portion will be rested on a two-and-a-half feet deep foundation dug into the rocks.

And to prevent the wall from slipping again, holes of 32 milimetres’ diameter will be dug in the foundation while iron bars of 25 milimetres’ diameter will be erected in them to reinforce the wall.

The wall will even have ‘weep’ holes to help rainwater seep through it and percolate in the ground. This will reduce the probability of the wall caving in owing to pressure from the percolated rainwater, they added. The wall was built to stop people from jumping into it, cattle and truck owners from polluting it.

No going back on decision to step down: Mashelkar

indianexpress:  It is the first time in his distinguished career spanning four decades that R A Mashelkar has taken such a step. But having done that, the scientist who retired as the director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) last year, says there is no going back.

Mashelkar resigned as the head of the Technical Experts Group (TEG) that looked into patents amendments on Saturday following the recent controversy over the patents report.

While the issue had been simmering for some time, it was deemed somewhat settled after the government had permitted the expert group to remove certain “technical inaccuracies” in the report and resubmit it for further consideration.

“This was in response to my plea on February 19, asking the government to withdraw the report immediately after I learnt that the sub-committee had unfortunately copied certain paragraphs verbatim, thus amounting to plagiarism. The government responded on this on March 7 saying they were permitting the removal of the objectionable parts and resubmission of the report. I was abroad and returned to Pune just two days ago after a two-week tour. On return I was deeply pained and upset to read reports where certain sections of the society — political parties and industrial houses- had cast aspersions on my integrity and motives,” Mashelkar told Pune Newsline from his office at the National Chemical Laboratory where he is back at work

Sharad Pawar all for city’s growth

indianexpress: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo and Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Saturday said his party’s focus will be on overall development of Pune and he expects every party to participate.

Referring to Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi’s outburst on Friday, he said he expected a more matured role from the Congress. “I understand Kalmadi’s anguish at losing the election but we expect him to work for the city’s welfare. If the Congress joins us, we will be happy and if it does not we will carry on regardless.”

“The thrust will be on the overall development of Pune. I am asking all parties to work for the city’s development, improvement of infrastructure and the traffic system,” he said. “Voters were angry this election and new technology to improve the traffic will be introduced,” he added.

Asked whether Pune will go to the NCP during the next Lok Sabha elections he said there is no proposal on a change in seat-sharing agreement during the Lok Sabha or assembly polls. “So far, we do not have a problem with Congress,” he said. On Kalmadi’s comment about a tie-up between NCP and Shiv Sena, Pawar said he has cordial relations with everyone.

Aptera Motor Company Shows Off 200+ MPG Car

dailytech: The Aptera typ-1 can achieve 230MPG thanks to its diesel-electric hybrid system

Loremo AD got a lot of attention last year when they announced its $13,000 Loremo LS coupe. The tiny 2+2 coupe is powered by a 20HP turbo-diesel engine and is capable of achieving 157MPG.

More recently, Venture Vehicles unveiled its VentureOne hybrid 3-wheeler. The two-seater is capable of 100MPH and can get 100MPG thanks to its tiny gasoline motor and 15kW hybrid system.

Today, we’ve learned of another high-mileage vehicle in our midst. The Aptera Motor Company has showed off its Aptera typ-1 which can achieve a remarkable 230MPG while cruising at 55MPH. The Aptera type-1 uses a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain and is able to sprint from 0-60 in under 10 seconds.

Unlike most hybrid automobiles which use Lithium-ion (Li-ion) or Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries, the Aptera typ-1 uses Nickel-zinc (NiZn) batteries.

The Aptera looks nowhere close to being road legal in its current form and its “distinctive” shape is sure to puzzle many onlookers. That being said, the vehicle is expected to retail for around $20,000 although no launch date has been given.

Smart fabrics to take the pulse

bbc: US special forces could soon be wearing smart fabrics that monitor how they cope during combat situations.

The fabric gathers information on heart beat, skin temperature, posture, activity and breathing rate when against the skin.

The textiles were developed by New Zealand firm Zephyr and have been shown off at the hi-tech trade fair, Cebit.

The fabric could also be used by athletes to hone their performance by measuring how they react in training.

At Cebit, Zephyr took the wraps off two of its patented products - a bio-harness and a shoe pod.

The bio-harness (a length of fabric worn around the chest) and the shoe pod (a smart insole) are both made of a patented textile that has the sensors woven into it. Once paired with electronics to store and broadcast data, this fabric can record physiological information.

Steven Small, director of business development for Zephyr, said the company expected the products to find a role in the health, defence and medical markets.

Already, he said, Zephyr had signed a deal with the US Department of Defense to provide some of its special forces with the bioharness.

Mr Small said the device would enable officers to see what physiological state their men were in.

Vehicle warning system trialled

bbc: Vehicles may soon be swapping information about road conditions to warn drivers about jams and dangers.

A German research project on show at hi-tech trade fair Cebit envisions a peer-to-peer network for vehicles on a road passing data back and forth.

Cars or bikes experiencing problems would pass data that would ripple down the chain of vehicles behind them.

Information would be conveyed to drivers via a dashboard screen or through a mobile phone headset.

Dr Anselm Blocher - a researcher at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence who is co-ordinating the project - said the ad hoc communication system could mean that drivers found out about dangers or jams ahead much more quickly than they do now.

For spotting dangers and jams, the system would use data from sensors that were likely to be fitted to cars, bikes and trucks in the future, Dr Blocher added.

When the motorbike comes after to the point of danger, information has been spread out by wireless network and the danger will be propagated to the driver in the motorbike

For example, cars could spot oil on the road by combining temperature readings with wheel traction information, he said.

AMD Claims 5-hour Battery Life for Turion Notebooks in 2007

dailytech: AMD is poised to square its next-generation tech squarely against Intel’s “Santa Rosa”

AMD is set to launch its upcoming K10 architecture with the Barcelona quad-core server processor.  However, since the ATI acquisition last year, AMD has also focused extensively on its mobile roadmap.

This May, Intel’s Centrino platform will enter its fourth revision with Santa Rosa.  Late last year AMD launched the Kite platform — 90nm dual-core Turion processors, DDR2-667 and 802.11g wireless.  Kite will undergo a refresh at about the same time as the Intel Santa Rosa platform launch.

The spearhead of this new initiative is the Hawk-family of mobile CPUs.  The first of these new Turion CPUs, dubbed Tyler, is a 65nm SOI DDR2-800 processor that utilizes Socket S1.  Essentially, this processor is Brisbane for the notebook, and does not incorporate any of the new features of the K10/Greyhound architecture.

Following Tyler, a low cost 65nm SOI revision dubbed Sherman will replace the 90nm Mobile Sempron cores.

Although AMD states its upcoming mobile platform is a collaboration between AMD and ATI, ATI’s contribution has been in the works for almost two years — well before the AMD merger.  Earlier this year, AMD leaked details of its Trevally mobile reference design detailing the exact component breakout for next generation Turion notebooks.
