indianexpress: Many of the city’s prominent educational institutions, including the National Insurance Academy (NIA), International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), and MIT School of Business, have come under fire from apex regulatory body All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for running courses and foreign collaborations without its prior approval.
As per a notice put up on its website, the AICTE has announced that 169 institutions from across the country have been offering unapproved courses, while 104 institutions have collaborations with foreign universities without seeking prior sanction. Figuring in the two lists are around 35 from Pune and over 70 from the rest of Maharashtra, a majority of them being from Mumbai.
Among other major institutes in Maharashtra mentioned in the list are Mumbai’s Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, Elphinstone College and Kohinoor College of Management.
The AICTE Act, 1987 says that no technical institution can be started without AICTE sanction. Even approved institutions need to apply while starting a new course, or taking up foreign collaborations. Thus, while many institutes may themselves be approved by the AICTE, they can still be hauled up for running specific courses that do not have the apex body’s approval.
The AICTE routinely scans advertisements of various educational institutions and forwards them to its legal cell, which verifies the approvals. As part of this process, 93 management and engineering institutions in Maharashtra had come under the scanner for being “totally unapproved” by the AICTE

indianexpress: For hundreds of Pimpri-Chinchwad residents who relish non-vegetarian food but abhorred the tedium of going into the dingy bylanes to buy their fish and meat, help is finally at hand. With Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation deciding to enforce stricter norms for both meat and fish vendors, it is expected that some of the unauthorised stalls selling stale products will soon be a thing of the past.
For starters, the civic body has made official licence compulsory for the vendors of mutton, chicken, beef and fish. Thus, scores of vendors who had till date been carrying on their business from shanties in dingy bylanes will now be forced to seek licence from the PCMC. In addition, the vendors will also need to procure a ‘no objection certificate from residential colonies in the vicinity.
“From April 1, vendors intending to sell meat and fish will have to obtain licence on payment of a certain fee from the PCMC without which they will not be allowed to operate,” PCMC veterinary chief Dr Satish Gore told Pune Newsline on Tuesday.
The principal objective, Dr Gore said, is to make fresh, healthy and wholesome meat and fish available to consumers. “The vendors should ensure that the shops have proper ventilation, good hygienic condition, fresh cutting material and low bacterial count of the table surface where the flesh is trimmed and processed,” Dr Gore said.
That’s not all. The vendor and all his workers will have to obtain medical certificates from PCMC hospitals about their own health. “Vendors suffering skin ailments or tuberculosis are barred from operating in these shops,” he added.
There are equally strict guidelines to be followed on waste disposal. “Mutton vendors have no problems of waste disposal. But in the case of chicken, there is nearly 35 per cent wastage. Either we will collect such waste or they dump it at a place specified by us,” Dr Gore added.

indianexpress: IN a bid to help professional students from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes to attain employability, the city’s industrialists have come forward to impart soft-skill training to these students for free. Started as a pilot project in January this year, 35 students are being trained in English communication, grooming, manners and etiquette.
The idea: To impart the soft skillsets to these students and make them confident of handling interviews and conveying ideas articulately in a competitive professional environment.
“Due to their social upbringing, these students are usually diffident and have problems while communicating at a professional level. Though they may be academically brilliant, they lose out as they cannot get through interviews and discussions,” says chief initiator of the programme Pradeep Bhargava.
So, the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) in partnership with the English Language Teaching Institute of Symbiosis started a three-month training course to “bridge the gap and polish these students”.
With ‘employability’ being the governing criteria, law and engineering students who were about to graduate and those appearing for MBA exams were shortlisted to undergo the training. “Since these students are on the verge of passing out from college and are about to enter higher educational institutes or jobs, they need to be trained for interviews and group discussions besides English. They need to be assertive, team players and focussed,” says Bhargava, who feels that socially backward students sometimes do not make the cut due to absence of these skills.
To make the programme practical and effective, HR professionals from participating CII members like KPIT, Zensar Technologies, ICICI Bank, Idea Cellular, Praj Industries and Thermax were deployed to give students a 60-hour training spanning 10 weekends. While CII members conducted 30 hours of training, the ELTIS faculty chipped in with the rest. The syllabus was also carefully devised after consultations with different industry members, to get a practical feel of professional communication needs.

indianexpress: SATARA-BASED Cooper Group of Industries, which has been active in the forging business, is planning to start production of Rural Transport Vehicles (RTV). The 85-year-old group having an annual turnover of Rs 400 crore has already entered into an MoU with UltraMotive Limited, UK, for engines of the RTV and has set up a facility on 20 acres of land at Kodoli village on the outskirts of Satara, some 110 kms from here.
To overcome the acute shortage of skilled people willing to work in Satara, the company has adopted a novel Human Resource Development policy — appealing to the emotions of techies hailing from Satara. Looking for recruitment of around 1,200 staff including 45 officers, the company’s appeal line is ‘Step ahead and contribute your bit in developing your own Satara.’
Cooper group spokesperson Jayvant Gujar says the policy is not new for them. “Getting people to work at a place like Satara is a major challenge as giants like Tata Motors are in neighbouring Pune. However, this strategy has been yielding results,” he said.
Gujar said that the company was looking at dedication, skill and commitment. “We are not even considering the age factor. We may recruit even retired people. That way we will get the benefit of their experience,” he added.
The Rural Transport Vehicle will have capacity to carry two tonne load and six passengers. The maximum speed of the vehicle will be around 80 kmph. Gujar said the vehicle is expected to help farmers transport their agricultural produce.
The other big projects that the Cooper Group is undertaking is production of high quality export oriented Diesel Engines. It is collaborating with UK based Ricardo, a leading provider of technology, product innovation, engineering solutions and strategic consulting to the world’s automotive industries

indianexpress: WHEN 5,000 handpicked soldiers from the armed forces around the world descend upon the country in October, the Indian Army will greet them with open arms. For, the underlying message of the fourth Military World Games (MWG) to be held at Hyderabad in October is simple — Friendship through Sports.
In a bid to promote the second largest sporting event in the world — with athletes from 127 countries, the MWG is dwarfed only by the Olympics — the army is conducting a ‘Run for Fun’ marathon in the city on April 1. Over 10,000 participants, including armed forces personnel, students and enthusiasts, are expected to take part in the run that will start from the racecourse and end at the sub area grounds.
“Most people, including armed forces personnel did not know about the games before we decided to host it. The idea is to raise awareness about the second largest international sporting event in the world,” said Lt Gen Ashok Kapur, Chief of Staff, Southern Command, who also heads the operations and administration organising committee for the games.
The army will put up posters and hoardings besides making a presentation about the games during the marathon. Officials will also give details of the different sporting events like the military pentathlon composed of shooting, swimming, cross-country, grenade throwing and an obstacle course during the event.

Spread over three acres of land, the Rs 150-crore project will have 250 rooms, out of which 175 have been planned for the first phase of the project, while the rest will be added in the second phase.
The hotel will have state-of-the-art facilities such as health club, meeting rooms, business centre, 24-hour restaurants, swimming pool, multi-cuisine and theme restaurants, bar lounge, according to a press release issued by Vascon Engineers on Tuesday.
According to Vascon Engineers chairman R Vasudevan, “We plan to complete construction of Phase I and have the hotel in an operational mode before October 2008. Currently, there is a shortage of 2,000 rooms in Pune and Vascon plans to add at least 1,500 rooms in the next two to three years.”
Pune is hosting Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in 2008 and the increase in investments and large number of companies coming to Pune has shot up the need for more business hotels. Holiday Inn Pune will cater to growing businesses in western Pune.

techtree: Google has always taken pride in its ‘plain jane’ look… All that’s about to change now…
To cater to those tech buffs who want to customize everything from their computers to their home pages, the search giant is reportedly today unveiling a new set of decorations or ’skins’ designed to make customers’ home pages even more homely.
The ’skins’ are panoramic settings programmed to change as per the time of the day and the outside weather.
Google’s Vice President of Search Products and User Experience, Marissa Mayer, said, Google has become the doorway to the Internet for a whole lot of people, so they want to make the site look and feel more like an online living room. She added, they feel they are personalizing things in a very tasteful and useable way.
Mayer said Google wants to jazz up its site, but without making things too busy or commercial.
This is evident from the company’s cautious approach even in case of its first batch of decorations that comprise just six themes revolving mostly around landscapes. The ’skins’ include a beach, a Japanese tea garden, a city skyline, and a bus stop. Google plans to introduce some more themes every month, and might even start accepting outside submissions, Mayer said.
The decorations are programmed to reflect what is happening in the outside world. Upon entering ZIP codes, users’ settings change from day to night or as per the weather outside.
Mayer hinted that the designs will also contain hidden surprises dubbed ‘Easter eggs’ that will open up with a timely click at a particular time of the day.
All said, it’s possible these bells and whistles will go down well with Google users. Already, a whole lot of them have created log-ins that allow them select from a range of features, including stock quotes, local weather, and news headlines

techtree: Scoring one up over Google, Yahoo! reportedly yesterday introduced its new Internet search system for mobile phone users, OneSearch that promises locally relevant search.
Unlike computer Web search that spews raw sets of links, OneSearch throws up a list of actual information, such as news headlines, images from Yahoo’s Flickr site, business listings, local weather, and links to other Web sites.
For instance, instead of popular movies or critical reviews, OneSearch lists local theaters playing a particular movie, user ratings of the movie, and news headlines related to it.
All that users need to do is enter a zip code or the city name for OneSearch to start delivering local search results. The results appear on a single page, and are prioritized into categories based on calculations done by Yahoo! computers.
Besides, Yahoo! promises to help a whole lot of local advertisers reach mobile phone customers - as they search.
Senior Vice President of Yahoo!’s Connected Life Business Unit, Marco Boerries, said they are now putting search on every mobile phone that has a browser, and are delivering results that consumers want with just one search, and not a list of Web links.
Yahoo! said it has begun offering OneSearch on 85 percent of existing US mobile phones with Web browsers, and is going beyond existing deals with Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, and LG Electronics to put Yahoo! on up and coming phones. OneSearch for mobile users will be offered in other international markets later this year, the company said.

bbc: An Italian technology company is pioneering a GPS satellite system that will give blind people greater independence and mobility.
The Easy Walk service has been developed by Il Village, a firm in Turin in northern Italy.
It is currently being tested by a group of 30 people from the Italian Blind Union who are providing feedback. The plan is for Easy Walk to be launched to blind and partially sighted people in Piedmont in the autumn.
Easy Walk uses a mobile phone that runs the Symbian operating system, a small Bluetooth GPS receiver, text to speech software called Talks (though rival products are also compatible) and a call centre that will operate around the clock seven days a week.
It requires just two dedicated keys on the mobile phone - one which, when pressed, tells the user their exact location including the house or building number and the other one alerts the call centre that the person needs assistance with navigation.
An operator will then call the blind person, find out where it is they need to go and stay on the line with them providing step by step instructions.
Easy Walk is the brainchild of Andrea de Paoli, Il Village’s technology officer.
“What is really important is that behind all that stuff there is a call centre with a human being that can help you and who understands your needs,” he said.
