indianexpress: THE State government’s Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) may prove a big disappointment for city slum dwellers who will have to choose between settling for 270 sq ft tenements or get thrown out from the scheme.
In the bargain, ending up the winner may well be the developer, as the scheme provides for a maximum floor space index (FSI) of 3. The cutoff date for rehabilitation has been set for January 1, 1995, as against the demand of slum dwellers for keeping 2000 as the cutoff date.
The participation of slum dwellers/ occupiers in the rehab scheme is obligatory. The guidelines says, “….for the approval of the scheme consent from the slum dwellers shall not be necessary.”
“The CEO (SRA) shall survey slum area and finalise list of eligible beneficiaries on declared rehabilitation area and it shall be obligatory on all listed families to participate in the scheme,” it further adds.
In case a slum dweller does not wish to join the scheme then his hut will be removed and he shall not be eligible for transit tenement nor a reconstructed tenement. Such slum dwellers will be entitled to whatever is available after others have made their choice at the draw of lots.
If the slum dwellers do not join till the building permission to the project is given they will completely lose the right to any built-up tenement which will be taken over by the SRA and used for accommodating pavement dwellers and other slum dwellers.

indianexpress: MORE than 1,500 prostitutes from 13 districts across the State gathered in the city on Monday to showcase their contribution to HIV prevention and plan out a future course of action. As peer educators, these women have played a critical role in HIV prevention in their communities.
Jointly organised by Project Mukta, Pathfinder International and Vaishya Anayaya Mukti Parishad (VAMP) a prostitutes’ collective, the convention facilitates a State-wide process of empowerment and collectivisation among prostitutes.
These women take responsibility for their own health and better access to health facilities in their community. They have also played a critical role in both the prevention and treatment of STDs and HIV prevention.
Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff said at the inauguration of the two-day event: “I am completely humbled by the tremendous work these women are doing to improve their community’s health. Their work demands recognition and applause.” Pathfinder Director Dr Michele Andina said, “What makes this convention particularly pathbreaking is that women themselves have organised it and shaped it.”
The two-day event will give women an opportunity to showcase their contribution to HIV prevention. They will also use the space for collective introspection and brainstorming to chart out their future path. Pathfinder International Community Outreach Director Pramod Nigudkar added that the organisation has been working with the prostitutes through the Mukta (freedom) project

indianexpress: THE visitor’s book at Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) has a blessing. It says, “With my sheer hope that this Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute will grow and proliferate much.” It is signed by the Dalai Lama.
Monday was a day of nostalgia for Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. In 1956, as a 21-year-old leader with the burden of fellow Tibetans on his shoulder, he had visited the country on being invited by the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti. At that time, he had visited Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune where his photographs were taken.
Fifty years after that visit, he was back at BORI, leafing through the albums and looking at rare manuscripts.
Though he could not fully recollect the visit, the photographs revived his memory. The photographs and Tibetan texts he saw at the institute, made him decide that the Sarnath-based Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies would collaborate with BORI. He pitched for it when honorary director of BORI M G Dhadphale expressed the desire to introduce Buddhist studies at the institute.
The Dalai Lama promised all help to the institute.
The spiritual leader also remembered other things about Pune. He spoke about Pune-based scholar of German V V Gokhale, a professor at Fergusson College, who also served as a representative of the British Government at Lhasa.

indianexpress: THE Promoters and Builders Association of Poona (PBAP) recently approved at its general body meeting the setting up of an academy that would train, assist and empower the developer community to bring in greater professionalism and higher standards in the industry. The first session of the academy, to be called READ (Real Estate Academy for Developers), is set to commence in June.
Lalit Kumar Jain, re-elected as the president PBAP said, “We want to create business leaders for the real estate sector. In India, the real estate industry is growing rapidly. But unfortunately we do not have trained professionals to cater to the demands of the industry and handle important aspects such as land assembly, financial management, project management. To that end we wish to launch an institute that will nurture talent and deliver high quality education with a global perspective.”
Jain said there were plans to partner with other institutes across the world to offer proper training and education.
The PBAP will be earmarking funds as interest free loan to the academy.
JP Shroff, in charge READ said, “The academy will offer an 18-month full time post graduate diploma in real estate business management, a 12-month part time advanced diploma for working executives along with a diploma for running a family business.”

indianexpress: IF last year all eyes were trained on Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Waheeda Prizm who became the first woman in the history of the Armed Forces to command a passing-out-parade at the Armed Forces Medical College, this year the buzz centered around the 110 cadets including 23 lady cadets who were commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) on Monday.
Collectively, they became the largest batch to graduate from the premier college on Monday.
An Army helicopter showered rose petals on the cadets after the Tricolour was unfurled making the day extra special for them and their parents. It was a proud moment for some as their wards bagged 12 out of 16 gold medals awarded by the Maharashtra University for Health Sciences (MUHS) for the current year.
The cadets scored a pass percentage of 100 percent in MBBS
( I ), 96.24 per cent in MBBS (II), 99.21 per cent in MBBS (III) part I and 92.18 per cent in MBBS (III) part II during the recently concluded MUHS examination. Of the 110 medical cadets, 93 were commissioned into the Army,11 into the Air Force and six into the Navy.
The ceremonial parade was reviewed by AFMC Director-General (DGAFMS) Surgeon Vice Admiral VK Singh. The proceedings began with a salute to the Dean and Deputy Commandant Maj Gen P Madhusoodanan followed by ceremonial salutes to AFMC commandant SK Kaul and the DGAFMS.
The parade was commanded by Surgeon Commander Dilip Raghavan and reviewed by the DGAFMS Surgeon Vice Admiral VK Singh. In his address, he urged the cadets to imbibe strong moral values, earn the trust, respect , compassion, empathy, understanding and confidence of the countrymen

itwire: IBM’s announcement of a high-speed optical transceiver chip has more to do with building fast multiprocessor systems than downloading entertainment, at least in the short term.
The transceiver chip being demonstrated this week by IBM scientists at the 2007 Optical Fiber Conference is capable of transferring 160 Gigabits per second, eight times the speed of currently available components.
Although IBM chose to describe the chip’s speed in terms of the amount of data in a high-definition movie, initial applications are apparently likely to be within computing systems rather than in broadband connections to homes.
Data flow between individual CPUs in a supercomputer or blade servers is currently a bottleneck because of the amount of space required and the heat generated. By using IBM’s transceiver in conjunction with densely spaced waveguides in place of copper tracks, designers stand to save valuable real estate on circuit boards as well as reducing power consumption, while simultaneously increasing performance.
Other early applications are likely to include the high-speed routers that control the flow of data across the Internet’s backbone and in high-end corporate and scientific/engineering networks.

techtree: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will reportedly meet this week to decide on whether to approve the ICM Registry’s proposal for .xxx, a virtual red light district for porn Web sites.
While the popular belief is that such a porn domain would enjoy widespread support from the adult entertainment industry, the reality is quite different.
A prominent member of an industry trade group called ‘Free Speech Coalition,’ said, .xxx must have general support among the industry its supposed to serve, but it does not. He said he hasn’t met a single Webmaster or adult video producer yet, who favors creation of .xxx.
The porn industry is apparently concerned that .xxx though voluntary, will make it easier later for governments to interfere in the way it is run/used.
The Free Speech Coalition is instead, all for a separate domain for kids-friendly Web sites. The group feels that .xxx, by virtue of being voluntary, will not have much effect on parents’ ability to block porn sites.
Apart from the porn industry itself, religious groups are against the concept of .xxx, as they feel this will legitimize and expand the number of adults sites.
Special counsel for a Christian law firm expressed the view that people would end up keeping their .com domains as well as buying .xxx, resulting in twice as much pornography on the Internet.
All opposing groups are in agreement over one thing, that .xxx will benefit only the ICM Registry, and no one else.

dailytech: Now if your cell phone dies, just toss some Sweet Tarts in the battery
Researchers at Saint Louis University have developed a fuel cell battery that can run on any type of sugar source. The batteries can run on anything from soft drinks to syrup and are said to last 3 to 4 times longer than lithium ion batteries. The funding for the research was provided by the U.S. Department of Defense.
The sugar battery works by using enzymes to strip sugars of charges which generate electricity. The only byproduct of the fuel cell is water and all materials that compose the battery are biodegradable, states the press release from the American Chemical Society of Society.
“This study shows that renewable fuels can be directly employed in batteries at room temperature to lead to more energy-efficient battery technology than metal-based approaches,” says study leader Shelley Minteer, Ph.D., an electrochemist at Saint Louis University. “It demonstrates that by bridging biology and chemistry, we can build a better battery that’s also cleaner for the environment.”
The only tested sugar products have been flat soda, glucose, sweetened liquids and tree sap which have showed good results. When testing with sweetened carbonated beverages, the results did not turn out so well, says Minteer.
Minteer envisions that the sugar battery will first be used for cell phone rechargers. The hope is that cell phone batteries would, once depleted, use a sugar reserve compartment to refuel the battery.
