First car rolls out from Tata-Fiat JV, more on way

indianexpress: The Rs 4,000-crore Tata-Fiat joint venture took off on Monday, with the new Palio Stile being rolled out from the Ranjangaon facility. The JV will generate 4,000 jobs and another 20,000 indirect jobs, with the total investment being made over a five-year period. The facility will be a platform for a slew of new generation Tata cars as also more cars from the Fiat stable — Grande Punto and Linea — by 2008. The plant, with a capacity to manufacture one lakh cars and two lakh engines and transmissions, is a unique venture where two leading car manufacturers are sharing the same facility.

“The Ranjangaon plant is a firm step in the progression of the strategic alliance between the two organisations. The plant will help our products benefit from Fiat’s global manufacturing practices and technology. The production capacity will be shared amicably” said Ravi Kant, Managing Director, Tata Motors.

As for Tata’s Rs 1-lakh car, where Fiat is providing technical assistance, Ravi Kant did not rule out Fiat introducing the car to other markets. “This is within the realm of possibility,” he said.

According to Fiat’s India head Giovanni de Fillipis and Stefan Ketter, senior vice-president, manufacturing, Fiat Group, this was the first step in working together with Tata and there was more to come.

“Our decision to shift our production activity to Ranjangaon is based on the objective of achieving cost efficiencies and building a world-class manufacturing plant. The Ranjangaon project is a crucial milestone in our agenda and its inauguration lays the foundation for a long journey ahead,” Ketter said.

The sales of Fiat cars in India has doubled since Tata Fiat dealer network was set up in March 2006 and is set to double this year, de Fillipis said. The distribution network currently has 63 dealers across the country, which will reach 100 by the year-end. The localisation, now at 70 per cent, was slated to go up later, he added. It was in July 2006 that Tata Motors and the Fiat Group had announced the signing of an MoU to set up the JV.

Deadline for conversion of autos to LPG relaxed

indianexpress: The Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) has relaxed the deadline for conversion of autorickshaws that are older than fifteen years into LPG in the city ‘indefinitely’. The EPCA will consider the situation in a meeting scheduled on April 4 in Mantralaya.

This is the fourth time that the deadline has been extended. Earlier, the EPCA had extended the deadline of December 2006 to March 31 for the conversion of the 9,085-odd autorickshaws. However, till March 31, around 8,328 autos were converted into LPG leaving a total of 757 still to switch over.

In an email sent to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), EPCA member Sunita Narain has blamed the non-availability of LGP in the city for the situation. The email says that the EPCA is aware of the conversion not being completed. “However, based on our assessment, it is also clear that the biggest bottleneck is the supply of LPG. The LPG supplying agencies had been given deadlines for new outlets in January, which was not done leading to the present state. Given this, the EPCA has no alternative but to extend the deadline indefinitely,” the mail mentions.

It further adds that the EPCA will hold discussions with oil supply agencies and see what action needs to be taken against them for non-compliance of the order. The mail has also requested the Pune RTO to not stop registration of the autorickshaws, since as per the earlier deadline of March 31, the RTO would have freezed the process.

Meanwhile, Pradeep Bhalerao, member of the Pune city rickshaw association mentioned other reasons for delay in the conversion process. He said that a number of autorickshaws were held up for conversion since they had to clear the RTO’s pending fines. “Fines amounting to Rs 6,000-7,000 are pending on many autorickshaw owners, which needed to be cleared for the conversion. Moreover, the process of conversion costs around Rs 14,000. Several autorickshaw owners are hesitant as it will burn holes in their pockets,” Bhalerao said.

Pawar for all-party panel on PMC issues

indianexpress: Within hours of the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Bapu Pathare being named chairman of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Standing Committee, Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar announced that his party would take the initiative to create unanimity among all parties on long-term policies pertaining to the city’s development.

Addressing a rally of party workers on Monday evening, Pawar said a committee would be formed for the purpose and will include former mayors and leaders of all parties. “The committee will discuss issues with corporators, pertaining to the development of Pune. It will also consult experts from various fields before forming an opinion. The committee will try to create consensus with regard to long-term policies,” he said.

Pawar minced no words while warning the newly elected NCP corporators and workers that there would be no excuse for failure to develop the city. “People in Pune are smart. They have not given a majority to any party because they want to test us. We will get a majority in the future only if we show them miracles in a short time,” he said.

He advised corporators to be vigilant and maintain decorum of the house, besides insisting on immediate completion of the various ongoing projects.

He blamed the local leadership of the Congress party for forcing the NCP to take help of other parties like the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “It was decided at the state-level that Congress and NCP would help each other in the mayoral elections. The decision was honoured in Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Solapur, Amravati, Akola and Nagpur. Only in Pune, the Congress leadership refused to give mayorship to the NCP though we had more corporators. This forced us to join hands with other parties in view of the development of Pune,” he said.

indianexpress:  When MSc student Mithila Takawnekar logged in on her laptop at Sambhaji Park, she was connected to the Internet. “We can now study in the park,” she said, checking her gmail account. The Pune Municipal Corporation and Chennai-based Microsense, the service provider, have ensured that Pune is the first city in the country to have wireless connectivity.

The Unwire Pune project was inaugurated by Union Minister of Agriculture Sharad Pawar on Monday. “This is one of the easiest ways to provide knowledge. I hope other cities will also imitate Pune,” he said.

The first phase of 25 sq km radius encompassing PMC headquarters, Deccan Gymkhana, Model Colony, Sambhaji Park, Baner and Aundh will be made wireless by July. In the next 16 months, the entire city is expected to go wireless. Citizens can access the net for free at Sambhaji Park in the first few days. “Till we work out the commercial modalities, the connectivity will be free,” said Microsense MD S Kailasnathan.

Users will be given a 13-digit password to access the net at a speed of 256 kbps and will have to pay Rs 250 for 100 hours of usage. Users will also get higher speed up to 2 MB at higher rates. Intel’s South Asia MD R Sivakumar said with high bandwidth speeds, it hopes to reduce the digital divide.

Although IT software professionals, students, office employees and youngsters are expected to make use of the facility, the biggest beneficiaries will be students of 30 civic schools.

Municipal commissioner Nitin Kareer said the project is an attempt to provide good net access at affordable prices and while Pune was an IT destination, the civic body wanted to make it distinct from other cities. “What better way than wireless connectivity. This will be the city’s USP,” he said.

In a paradox, the civic body’s official website www.egovpmc.com could not be accessed even though the PMC building is one of the beneficiaries of the project.

67 autos booked in PCMC areas

indianexpress: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pimpri-Chinchwad has in the last two days booked 67 three-seater autorickshaws for plying without meters. The errant autos have been issued memos and now face prosecution and suspension of their licences. The RTO has, from April 1, launched a drive across Pimpri-Chinchwad to enforce plying by meters.

Assistant Regional Transport Officer S S Pawar said their office has deployed squads to check whether autorickshaws were adhering to the norms. “If they are found plying without meters, the autorickshaws are issued memos on the spot. After seven days, they will face prosecution,” he said. Pawar said the squads consists of six people each with five of them belonging to the traffic department.

On March 23, the Traffic Mobility Committee of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation had decided to enforce compulsory meter system for three-seater autorickshaws and at the same time asked PCMC engineers to remove encroachments from Pimpri Camp. While the RTO has begun its drive in all earnest, the PCMC engineers — who claim that they have drawn up an action plan — are yet to get started.

Pune Unwired!

techtree: Intel India along with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Microsense has launched the deployment of the ‘Unwire Pune’ project.

With this, Pune becomes the first city in the country to have commercial meshed Wi-fi and WiMax deployment.

Through this initiative, PMC proposes to make Pune a ‘wireless city’ which will provide fast network access to millions of users from the private, corporate and administrative sectors while projecting the city as the innovative and progressive hub of the information age.

In 2006, PMC selected Intel India as the chief technology and program management consultant to architect the project. Now, the Phase-1 of deployment has started with Microsense. Microsense will roll out the network and offer broadband wireless services.

The Phase-1 is targeted at providing wireless connectivity to an area of 20 sq kms, covering Deccan Gymkhana, Sambhaji Park, Aundh, Baner and Model Colony in the city. It is likely to be completed in 4 to 6 months and the entire project of 250 sq km of PMC will be rolled out in next 12 to 18 months.

According to the company, this will result in round-the-clock seamless (ubiquitous) Internet connectivity, available throughout the city. Starting from today, the people can experience seamless connectivity in Sambhaji Park and the PMC Building.

R. Sivakumar, Managing Director of Intel (South Asia) said, “Intel believes that this endeavour ‘Unwiring Pune’ is a significant leap in making broadband ubiquitous connectivity, accessible to the common man. This is a momentous announcement as we continue to scale and deliver on our vision of World Ahead. We look forward to a continued strong association with PMC.”

Two New Maps For Halo 2

techtree: Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie Studios have confirmed the upcoming release of two new, eagerly awaited downloadable maps for Halo 2.

This move comes as a result of the request from the fans of the original ‘Halo’ for the addition of some favorite maps to multiplayer ‘Halo 2.’ The company believes that these re-creations, developed by Bungie and Certain Affinity are a perfect way to thank fans for their support as they surpass 800 million hours of ‘Halo 2′ gaming on Xbox Live.

According to the company, the two maps will add new life to ancient battlefields and legendary skirmishes as both are new, improved and redesigned remakes of fan favorites from the original Halo: Combat Evolved.

The king of Halo maps, the Hang ‘Em High, arguably the most popular multiplayer map for the original title, has been reimagined for Halo 2 as Tombstone, with all-new graphics, features and a few hidden surprises. It will offer fans dangerous catwalks and trenches which makes it the most requested map ever.

The second map, Desolation, is a symmetrical, Deathmatch-oriented map and a beautiful remake of the original Derelict. With new graphics, effects and a massive gameplay overhaul, the old favorite is now faster-paced and more balanced than ever; perfect for intense Halo 2 combat.

Halo 2 is a sequel to the highly successful and critically acclaimed Halo: Combat Evolved and represents the second chapter in the epic Halo trilogy. Since its launch in fall 2004, Halo 2 has maintained its place as the most popular Xbox Live title ever. Gamers are now eagerly awaiting Halo 3, which is scheduled for release this fall.

Both maps will be available through the Halo 2 in-game content downloader for both Xbox and Xbox 360 at a price of $4 for the pair on April 17.

Everest mobile call effort begins

bbc: A British climber has embarked on an attempt to make the world’s highest phone call.
Rod Baber plans to climb Everest and then establish a world record by making a mobile call from the summit.

Weather permitting, the attempt to reach the peak of Everest is scheduled to take place in late May.

“There’s no reason why it should not work,” said Mr Baber who already holds a world record for reaching the highest point of every European nation.

Making a phone call from the summit of Everest has become possible thanks to a mobile base station installed in China that has line of sight to the north side of the mountain.

Mr Baber was confident that the attempt on the world record would work because the phone he will use has been tested in very low temperatures and the final climb will only happen if weather conditions are good.

The downside is that staying in contact with this base station demands that climbers follow the north ridge to the top - generally regarded as the toughest route.

Mr Baber is travelling in an expedition organised and run by experienced mountain climbing group HimEx which, says Mr Baber, has one of the best records of getting climbers to the top of the mountain.

An experienced climber Mr Baber also holds the world record for climbing more of the world’s highest points than any one else. However, all his climbing has been done on peaks under 7,000 metres high.
