indianexpress: It’s been a full 10 years since Jayashree Haridas Dhotare left her village in Indapur taluka, and travelled 130 km in search of a better life in Pune city. Now in her early forties, life is one unending struggle for Dhotare as she puts in about 20 hours spread over two days at a quarry in the city’s outskirts, all for Rs 100. Her job involves crushing stones and putting the load on a tractor. Her dreams of a better life remain just that —dreams.
“We purchase jowar and wheat at Rs 14 a kg from the open market. Whatever we earn is spent on buying food items,” says Dhotare, who has been waiting for the last 18 months for an elusive ration card for her family of three. There are 291 other families working at the stone quarry —none of them have been issued ration cards.
A state government resolution of 2000 clearly specifies that “The pre-condition of any documents for issuing a ration card has been lifted” in case of people who have to keep moving from place to place in search of livelihood. This also applies to unorganised labour and nomads.
As per the resolution, state officials should fill up the forms in prescribed format for such families and conduct inspections before issuing temporary ration cards. When contacted, district collector Prabhakar Deshmukh said the issue was not under his purview and the resident deputy collector (RDC) should be contacted. The RDC said it was the food and civil supplies section at the Haveli tehsildar’s office that should be approached.
According to Haveli tehsildar Sanjeev Deshmukh many quarry workers have ration cards in their native villages. “Issuing them another ration card would mean two cards for one person,” he said, but agreed that ration cards can be issued against a written undertaking from the quarry workers that they do not possess a ration card.

indianexpress: An autorickshaw is not something that you would immediately associate with as an advertising tool, especially when the product being vended is a mobile telephony service. But that is what Idea Cellular Ltd is trying out with 50 auto-rickshaws in Pune. Given the visibility and reach of the auto-rickshaw, it arguably makes quite an impact as an outdoor advertising medium and that was what Idea Cellular was banking on when it recently launched a pilot ad campaign with about 50 autos in Pune.
Given factors like high visibility, low costs and the mobile nature of the advertisement, the marketing idea seemed to appeal to the telecom major. “A small advertisement in a newspaper would cost around Rs 15,000 where as a billboard in Pune would be around Rs 40,000 per month. In comparison to this, an advertisement on a rickshaw would cost Rs 200 per month,” said a company executive associated with the campaign.
Idea Cellular has hired an agency to keep track of the autos and make a monthly payment to only those drivers who keep the advertisements in place. “We are trying to work out this medium as a permanent one. With a regular audit, this system can be very effective,” he said.
With ‘A’ category markets having reached a saturation point, there is a need to reach out to the lower category markets and it is in this context that the autorickshaw as an advertising tool makes an impact. It’s not that Idea Cellular was the first company to think of tapping the marketing potential of the aam admi’s traveling option to market its services.
Mouthshut.com , India’s first person-to-person information exchange website started the trend in Pune towards the end of 2005. “We zeroed in on auto-rickshaws as an advertising medium way back in 2001in cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Apart from being cost effective, autos also provide long-term value. We have even encountered autos that have carried our advertisements for two years or more,” said Faisal Farooqui, founder and CEO.
Another website to cotton on to the concept of using autorickshaw as an advertising tool a month ago was Mh12.com , a Pune-specific website. “Auto rickshaws have a uniform presence in almost every part of the city. In fact, when I decided to advertise, I went to just three places - Swargate, Shivaji Nagar and Pune Station and I could tap 350 auto rickshaws,” said Rafiq Shaikh, proprietor of Mh12.com . Hits on his website have risen by 70 per cent ever since he used autos as an advertisement medium, he added.

indianexpress: The food and civic supplies department under the district collector has identified over 3.30 lakh bogus ration cards and 2.97 lakh ration card holders have been slapped with notices for lack of documents.
The 2.97 lakh ration card holders have been given a deadline of three months for providing proper and complete details and documents. The cards will be cancelled if they fail to provide the documents.
For identifying bogus cards, the supply department undertakes a drive from December to February. Some 11.28 lakh ration card holders were asked to submit proof of residence and family members’ information.
However, only 7.18 lakh ration card holders filled the applications and remaining 3.30 lakh ration card holders could not provide the information despite regular warnings.
City food and civil supplies department officer Apurva Wankhede said, “The card holdres who have failed to fill up applications will be given another chance and to provide information on the same, pamphlets will be put up at the offices of district collector, tehsil and zone office.”
Wankhede added that cards of those who did not submit details even after this would be declared bogus and will be cancelled. She also said that some 5.88 lakh new ration cards will be computerised. “These applications are comprehensive and include residence proof, information of family and photograph of the head of family,” Wankhede said.

indianexpress: The Pune Luxury Bus Owners Association and Maharashtra Rajya Truck, Tempo, Tanker, Bus Vahatuk Mahasangh have threatened to keep private buses off the roads if the PMC’s Traffic mobility committee implements its decision to get private buses out of city limits without providing them with basic amenities.
Recently, the committee had issued instructions that private bus owners will not be allowed to operate their buses in the city except from the six points it had specified.
In a press release issued here, the association said that the six spots namely Gunjan Theatre, Yerawada, Jamanalal Bajaj Udyan, Wakadewadi, Aundh old octroi Naka, Rajiv Gandhi Prani Sangrahalay, Katraj, Vanaz Company, Paud Road and Bhairoba Nala, Race Cource had been chosen by the committee without a proper study.
The release specifically mentions that such a move will hamper the business of private owners especially during the holiday season when passengers will have to incur an additional cost on travelling to the pick up points, plus it will also increase the time involved in travelling within the city, causing inconvenience.
Meanwhile, the release mentioned that if the committee was to implement its plan, it must also make arrangements to provide basic facilities such as secure parking space, space for autorickshaws, taxis and a PMT stand, waiting lounge for customers with proper seating arrangements, toilet blocks, snack counters, telephone booths etc.

indianexpress: City activists have demanded that the Pune Municipal Corporation ward offices accept Right To Information (RTI) requisitions. They have also sought that ward officers be appointed as Assistant Public Information Officers (APIOs) under the RTI Act.
RTI activists Vihas Dhurve, Vivek Velankar, Vijay Kumbhar and R R Phondge have written to Municipal Commissioner Nitin Kareer to ensure that the PMC accepts RTI appeals filed by citizens at ward offices. Dhurve said the RTI Act 2005, section 5, indicated that APIOs should be appointed at places for the convenience of citizens. These APIOs should accept RTI applications and appeals and in turn forward it to PIOs and appellate authorities.
Dhurve pointed out that the General Post Office works as APIO for all Central government department offices and accepts RTI requisitions on their behalf and further passes them on to the department concerned.

dailytech: Intel’s quad-core receives a clock speed upgrade to 2.93 GHz
Intel today bumped the clock speeds of its quad-core Core 2 Extreme processors with the addition of the QX6800. The new Core 2 Extreme QX6800 clocks in at 2.93 GHz, matching last summer’s dual-core flagship X6800. Intel’s new Core 2 Extreme QX6800 features 8MB of total L2 cache and an unlocked upper multiplier for overclocking goodness.
As with the previous Core 2 Extreme QX6700 and Core 2 Quad Q6600, the new QX6800 shares the 65nm Kentsfieldcore. Intel expects to introduce 45nm Penryn-based processors in the second half of 2007. The new Core 2 Extreme QX6800 is Intel’s fourth consumer quad-core processor, whereas AMD isn’t set to introduce its upcoming Barcelona quad-core architecture until later this year.
Users wanting 2.93 GHz of smooth quad-core power will have to cough up a pretty penny. Intel prices the Core 2 Extreme QX6800 at $1199, however, aggressive Q3’07 price cuts will drop the QX6800 down to $999.

The drives also feature 2 GB of free online storage to protect the user’s most important data from disaster.

“We’re a company to watch this year,” said Mike Cordano, Fabrik CEO and cofounder. “Our vision is to simplify storing accessing and sharing content whether at home, online or on the road by weaving our Simple Tech products and Myfabrik services into user-friendly, purposeful solutions. The expansion of the SimpleDrive family is the first of many steps we are taking to drive market transformation.”
Designed by Pininfarina, the Italian design firm responsible for the Ferrari’s sleek look, the SimpleDrive desktop line cloaks up to 1 TB of storage beneath a slim and vibrantly-colored exterior. Panininfarina gave the device an ultra-low and sporty profile, featuring a large centrally-located button surrounded by a light ring. Pressing the button initiates a complete computer backup, and the light ring quickly reveals the hard drive’s storage capacity.

zdnet: Apple has launched a Mac Pro with two Intel quad-core processors working in tandem as a single processor, giving the system very fast performance.
The processors are 3GHz Intel Xeons. Users can choose between an eight-core, which uses two quad-core “Clovertown” processors; and a quad-core machine with two dual-core “Woodcrest” processors. Both can run slower at 2GHz, or be stepped up to 3GHz.
The dual quad-core machines offer 8MB of cache on-board as standard, which can be upgraded to 16MB. Along with the cache, the system can accommodate serial ATA (SATA) hard drives that can support up to 3TB (terabytes) of storage.
Apple announced the system quietly on its website on Wednesday, where it gave a price of $3,997 (£2,031).
