indianexpress: The Yerawada Central Prison, among the biggest jails in the country with over 3,000 prisoners, boasts of an industry which has 12 units where prisoners work.
The industry, which includes handloom and powerloom, dyeing, tailoring, carpentry, smithy, paper manufacturing, vehicle repair workshop, laundry, bakery, leather items and even a car washing centre and earnings from the open jail, has posted an impressive revenue growth by raking in Rs 5.45 crore in 2006-07 as against Rs 5 crore in the previous year.
The in-house prison industry, which supports the jail, is called Udyog Karagruha. More than 70 products are churned out by 400 chosen prisoners —terracotta, cloth, sarees, bedsheets, hospital-related cloth products, painted bedsheets, stitching school, police and home guard uniforms, wooden furniture, notebooks, files, metal racks and furniture, baking bread, biscuits and other bakery products .
Superintendent of Yerawada Prison Rajendra Dhamane attributed the jump in revenue to utilisation of the prisoners’ skills. “We want the abundant time the prisoners have to be used in gainful employment. Their skills are honed and their potential is used to the fullest extent. Work reduces their boredom and rejuvenates them to increase their performance everyday. It also leads to reformation,” Dhamane said.
Senior jailor Dilip Wasnik, who is in-charge of the factory department that oversees the prison industry said, “All government departments including schools and Pune Municipal Transport are our clients. They submit their requirement and we supply the goods. Visitors and the general public too buy goods though on a small scale.”
The prisoners are divided into skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers and get a daily allowance of Rs 25.50, Rs 17 and Rs 12.75 based on their categories. They are encouraged to give their best. In return, they are given benefits like parole for seven days, promotion as night watchmen and convict overseers. “Our endeavour is to encourage and motivate the prisoners, a small step towards changing their lives,” Wasnik said.

indianexpress: Failure on the part of the Pune Municipal Corporation to build a road divider on Sanjay Gandhi Road has led to the traffic police shelving a plan to decongest the Pune Railway Station area.
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) had sought introduction of two-way traffic on Sanjay Gandhi Road from Pune Railway Station to Maldhakka.
Traffic snarls are common in the vicinity of the railway station. To decongest the area, the city traffic branch and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had agreed to the plan for two-way traffic movement. The PMC was asked to construct a road divider and remove the traffic island opposite the railway station.
“We had communicated our suggestion to the PMC during the meeting of traffic mobility committee last year. It was decided that a road divider will be constructed and the traffic island will be removed,” said police inspector Milind Patil, in-charge of Cantonment division of traffic branch.
The traffic plan, designed by College of Engineering, Pune is yet to see the light of the day. “The Kasba Peth ward office, which was to undertake the job, was closed down and the work got stalled,” said a PMC official.
The Sanjay Gandhi Road has been operating as a one-way since 2005. According to the MSRTC, the road had been reduced to a hub of private transport operators with their buses and taxis occupying a major portion of the carriageway.

A decision given by a division bench comprising of Justice Ranjana Desai and DB Bhosale on Thursday issued orders to stop both intra-country and inter-country adoptions for the agency. The court however directed that the 30 adoption applications pending before the Pune district court, processed by Preet Mandir will be expeditiously disposed off by the family courts.
NGO Adwait Foundation had filed a petition in the High Court last year following a sting operation by a news channel that showed alleged malpractices by the adoption agency.

indianexpress: Four youngsters have been sentenced to life imprisonment by Fast Track court Judge L A Borde for their involvement in the murder of the alleged ringleader of a Hadapsar-based drug cartel, Mohiuddin Sayyed.
Incidentally, the room in the Ramoshi Vasti area of Hadapsar from where the Anti Narcotics Cell of Pune police recovered one tonne Ganja in March during the crackdown following the Donje party bust, was owned by Sayyed.
The convicted youth include Satish Dnyaneshwar Jagtap (27), Umesh Shivaji Pawar (25), Ajay Uttam Kamthe (21) and Anant Pandurang Yeole (32). Except for Yeole, who is a resident of Wadaki on Pune-Saswad road, all others are residents of Bhekarainagar near Phursungi. According to the prosecution’s case, the four had hacked Mohiuddin to death in full public view at a bus stop at Bhekarainagar on November 8, 2004.
The four were arrested after Mohiuddin’s friend Rakesh Chandrakant Sanas lodged a First Information Report (FIR). According to the FIR, the four were angry because Mohiuddin had helped one Laxmi Dhavare lodge an FIR of a rape case against them.
Additional Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar examined 16 prosecution witnesses of which 12 turned hostile. Pawar had then argued that the testimonies of the four prosecution witnesses which narrated elaborate details as to how Mohiuddin was ruthlessly murdered, cannot be ruled out.
Mohiuddin, who was a history-sheeter himself, allegedly led a drug cartel having its base in Ramoshi Vasti.
Later, investigations by the ANC revealed that the drug cartel which used the house as a storage space-cum-packaging centre, had supplied narcotics to the rave party revellers. Moreover, the investigations also revealed that Mohiuddin had set up the drug storage centre-cum-packaging unit with the help of a local resident Maruti Jagtap (62).

indianexpress: After at least 100 students from Pune were allocated examination centres in far-flung areas like Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Surat and Vadodara, yet another glitch in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) has Hadapsar student Kavita Kodre and her father Trimbak running from pillar to post, as her admit card came with a wrong photograph.
The AIEEE is an entrance examination for engineering colleges nationwide, and is administered centrally by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in Delhi. When Kodre, a student of the RR Shinde College in Hadapsar, failed to receive her admit card by post like her classmates, she downloaded the same from the AIEEE website. “Since the internet version had no photograph, I stuck one on, and got it attested by the college principal,” said Trimbak.
However when they went to the allocated examination centre to verify the admit card, it was found that the admit card available at the centre had a wrong photograph printed on it. “Although the other particulars like name and application number matched, the superintendent said that he could not do anything, and that we would have to take our complaint to the office in Delhi,” said a concerned Trimbak.
Speaking to Pune Newsline, CBSE’s Special Examination Department Head Pitam Singh said, “It is possible that there is a mistake on the CBSE’s part, but I have issued instructions to the Board representatives in each State to allow students in such cases to sit for the examination. It is assured that the child will not be prevented from giving the examination,” Singh, however, added that the student would need to present some photo identification for verification.

bbc: Attempts to understand diseases such as Alzheimers have got a boost from Sony’s PlayStation 3 console.
More than 250,000 PS3 owners have enrolled their console in the Folding@Home project which uses it to study the shapes proteins assume.
So many have signed up that the project has carried out a year’s worth of research in a month.
Proteins that do not fold correctly have been implicated in diseases such as Alzheimers and BSE.
The Folding@Home (F@H) project uses idle machines, be they PCs or game consoles, to simulate how proteins, the building blocks of life, assume the forms that play key roles in living tissue.
A better understanding of these folded forms could help tackle disease or help manipulate or mimic these vital structures.
The project, like many others, tries to solve hugely complicated problems by splitting them up into thousands of much smaller tasks.
By harnessing thousands of idle machines to do hundreds of thousands of these smaller tasks it becomes possible to do analysis that would take years to complete on a single supercomputer.
“Thanks to PS3, we have performed simulations in the first few weeks that would normally take us more than a year to calculate,” said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and leader of the Folding@Home project.

cnet: Adobe Systems plans to open-source Flex, its development framework for building Flash and Apollo-based applications.
The company on Wednesday is expected to announce the move, which will start when it releases a beta of the next version of Flex, code-named Moxie, in June.
By the time Adobe releases the final version of Moxie, which will be called Flex 3, near the end of the year, it expects to have a fully functioning open-source project, company executives said Tuesday. Adobe intends to use the Mozilla Public License.
The company said it will open-source the Flex software development kit, which includes a compiler and libraries designed to speed up development. It plans to continue to sell Flex Builder, an Eclipse-based development tool, and Flex Data Services, server software for accessing corporate databases.
Flex is one of a growing number of alternatives for building so-called rich Internet applications, which sport an interactive front-end interface. Using the development framework, programmers create an application that can run within Adobe’s Flash Player or Apollo, its “player” for desktop applications.
The company chose to create an open-source project for the Flex software to garner good ideas and contributions from developers outside Adobe, said Jeff Whatcott, vice president for product marketing at Adobe’s enterprise and developer business unit.
The move is also meant to appeal to open-source developers who shun closed-source and proprietary products. Adobe already offers the Flex software development kit for free and provides the source code.
“For some people, (open source) is a philosophical requirement, a sign of integrity and trust in a vendor,” Whatcott said. “This will close that gap and address any lingering doubts they have about our openness and commitment to community.”
