Germany to build maglev railway

bbc: Germany has come up with the funds to launch its first magnetic levitation - or maglev - rail service.
The state of Bavaria is to build the high-speed railway line from Munich city centre to its airport, making it Europe’s first commercial track.

Maglev trains use electric-powered magnets that enable them to float above their tracks, allowing for much faster speeds than traditional rail services.

The 1.85bn-euro ($2.6bn; £1.3bn) project had faced financing problems.

However, the Bavarian state government said it had signed an agreement with rail operator Deutsche Bahn and industrial consortium Transrapid that includes the developers of the train - Siemens and ThyssenKrupp.

Sony to Debut More Affordable VAIO NR Notebooks

beta: Today Sony announced its newest addition to the VAIO line of notebooks: the NR, its cheapest model to date.

Historically, Sony’s VAIO line has been heavy on style while remaining light in your backpack. Though at times some entries in the line do look conspicuously similar to MacBook Pros, they have a design ethic that appeals to many.

The price tag VAIOs typically carry is quite large as well, with some retailing for over $3,000 USD. Today, however, Sony announced its lowest-priced VAIO notebooks to date. They’re still stylish: slim with rounded corners, in a textured chassis that looks and feels - though isn’t - upholstered.

Dubbed the NR series, these entry-level notebooks will include Intel Core 2 Duo processors pre-installed with Vista Home Premium. Standard features include 802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN, 4 USB ports, CD/DVD burning capability, and slots for Expresscards, SD cards and PROTM memory sticks.

The full line of VAIO notebooks and options is available at Sony Style, though the NR will be added in October with a base price of $750 USD.

NVidia Moves Further Into Integrated GPUs

beta: Today’s introduction of a new set of GeForce 7 integrated graphics chips for PC motherboards marks a major push for nVidia towards a segment of the market that Intel has traditionally commanded.

For years, graphics processor manufacturer nVidia has executed a simple strategy: Introduce innovative features on the high-end first, then push yesterday’s high-end features down to the mainstream. By consequence, yesterday’s mainstream GPUs were pushed to the low end, where the company historically maintained it’s a better choice than integrated graphics.

But with more motherboard manufacturers relying upon Intel’s newest chipsets to drive its latest CPUs, value systems started appearing in the market with nVidia’s value-priced cards stacked on top of Intel’s integrated GPUs, which weren’t being used but were there anyway. If it’s a question of which is the easiest to remove, it’s the one that most easily unplugs…so nVidia was faced with a problem. Today it’s answered that problem by unveiling its first a new line of integrated GPUs - essentially modified GeForce 7 series tailored for inclusion on motherboards with both Intel and AMD CPUs.
