Shaolin training for Pune schoolgirls
TOI : PUNE: Girls from standards V to XI in schools managed by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) will be imparted regular training in various self-defence techniques beginning next month. The first phase of the programme will commence next week under the guidance of Deepak Dubey, India’s only kung fu grandmaster trained at the famed Shaolin temple.
According to S.K. Sardana, PCB’s chief executive officer (CEO), around 1,500 girls studying in high-school standards will undergo the training. It will be implemented in the three cantonment-run high schools, including the Mahadji Shinde high school at Wanowrie Bazaar, the Ghorpadi village high school at Ghorpadigaon and the Dr Ambedkar memorial high school at Solapur Bazaar.
Jabalpur-based Dubey, who has spent a number of years in China to master kung fu at the legendary Shaolin Temple, has given quite a few performances in Pune over the past five months. Last week, the city police department had organised a special session by Dubey for the police personnel at the Shivajinagar parade ground.
According to Sardana, the first session in February would be conducted for four days at the Wanowrie Bazaar football ground. “We are only following an example set by various state education boards and private institutions to train school-children, especially girls, in some art form or the other,” said the CEO. He added that the PCB was spending Rs 15,000 for the first session.
Besides helping the schoolgirls brave any untoward situation, including assault and harassment, this courses in martial arts will help cultivate a skill, which greatly moulds an individual, according to PCB officials.
Asked about the inclusion of kids from the seven PCB-run primary schools and the two Urdu-medium schools at Camp, Sardana stated that Dubey’s session would only mark the initiation of a project which will be long-drawn.

I know Mr Deepak Dubey very closely, I like his style, but for your kind information Mr Deepak Dubey has never been to China forget about Shaolin. Deepak Dubey has no formal training in Martial arts, he has just learnt in some schools in Jabalpur and by watching Bruce Lee movies. For a proof you can see Deepak’s passpport, you will not find a single visa for China.

AHMEDABAD: Gajanand Rajput gives the impression that he wouldn’t hurt a fly. But looks are deceptive. Behind the placid demeanour is a man who can take down bullies twice his size with a single punch.
Rajput (28) is a 35th generation Shaolin Temple warrior disciple, the only Indian at that. He was trained at the Shaolin temple in Henan, China and even bore a Chinese name, Shi Heng Chang, meaning ‘long time relative’, bestowed on him by his Master. The first generation of warrior monks began practising Wushu in the 11th century. The cult was outlawed as Shaolin Kung-Fu gained notoriety after the monks started a revolution in China with their unbelievable fighting skills.
“I began practising Wushu as a hobby 15 years ago but it soon became my occupation and lifelong obsession,” says Rajput, also general secretary of the Martial Arts Authority of India.
Wushu has many disciplines like unarmed combat, sword-play, staff-play and spear-play and Rajput is equally adept at all of them. Wushu is as much a training regimen for the mind as for the body. “Not only am I more confident physically but I am also more focused mentally because of it,” says Rajput.
His obsession opened new avenues for him and he recently worked on the TV serial Prithviraj Chauhan as an action choreographer.
“Not only is Gajanand Sir very accomplished in Wushu but his knowledge about martial arts in general is phenomenal,” says Gaurav Rokade (24), a BPO staffer and disciple of Rajput’s. Rajput has been awarded a doctorate from the International University of Sport and Martial Arts Science, New Jersey because of his proficiency in Wushu. “When I was in China, I saw people of ages 4-80 years practising martial arts. I think we in India too should make martial arts more popular. I dream that one day martial arts will be taught in every school in the country.”
With people like him dedicating their lives to it, that day may not be too far off.
