Girl’s body found floating in Mutha

TOI : PUNE: The body of a 17-year-old girl was found floating in the Mutha right bank canal in the cantonment water works premises on Tuesday afternoon.

The civic body officials said the body was spotted before it could float in from the main gate.

The deceased has been identified as Sonal Devidas Susgohar of Bhavani Peth, who had been missing since Sunday, after, according to sources, she had stepped out of home in a fit of anger. Her sister had filed a missing complaint at the Centre Street chowky on the same day.

The Cantonment police are trying to ascertain the cause of death — whether the girl drowned or was killed. A complaint of accidental death has been registered at the Solapur Bazaar police chowky.

Meanwhile, Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) water supply department Chief V.G. Kulkarni said the body was spotted before it entered the water works.

“No untoward incident has taken place on the premises of the cantonment water works,” he told TOI.

The security guards saw the body flowing downstream in the canal and immediately alerted the fire-brigade. “There are proper screens at the intake point. No foreign body can enter the water works,” he added.

Slum youths don police cap

TOI : PUNE: In a novel move, the city police have started roping in youths staying in slums to keep a tab on illegal activities of criminals there.

The decision is a result of police commissioner Jayant Umranikar directing police stations to revamp their old project ‘zopadpatti parishad’, which had aimed at garnering local support to keep a watch on criminal activities in slums.

The parishad, with four to five members in each slum, was disbanded after a review revealed that it did not meet the desired results.

The information given by these local youngsters, regarding criminals and illegal activities in their respective areas, will help the police take prompt action. The process of identifying these young informers has begun, wherein their identity will be protected.

This act is expected to help maintain law and order. A pilot project has already been undertaken at the Dattawadi and the Janata vasahat slum in Parvati.

“The pilot project has yielded good results and evoked a positive response from the local youths. Hence, we will undertake a similar project in the Upper Indira Nagar slum in Bibvewadi and Tadiwala road slum, behind the Pune railway station,” deputy commissioner of police (zone II) Satish Khandare told TOI.

Khandare said the main purpose of this plan was to try and understand the slum dwellers and develop an interaction with them.

Moreover, the police will meet the slum dwellers in the slum itself, doing away with the practise of holding such meetings at the police stations.

“These meetings will provide a platform to the people to air their grievances,” he said.

Elaborating on the project, Khandare said that with help from these informers the police have, so far, arrested six absconding criminals. Also, the information supplied has helped launch a crack down against several illicit…More
