Police laxity cause nanny’s ‘torture’

TOI : PUNE: For the past five days, Kalpana Salunke (42) has been waiting anxiously for a positive step from the Pune police. She had filed an application with the Kondhwa police alleging physical torture by her Spain-based Indian origin employer, Nita Tilocani.

The Sahyog Trust, led by advocate Asim Sarode, has threatened to file a private complaint against the police if they fail to register a complaint. Salunke was allegedly tortured by Tilocani and her family members by beating her up, inflicting burns on her body and holding her hostage after she went to work as a nanny on January 5.

DCP Jallinder Supekar (zone IV) on Wednesday said they have received Salunke’s complaint and they are investigating the matter. “We are looking into the matter and appropriate action will be taken.”

Sarode, who helped Salunke register the case, said the crime started in Pune. “We find no reason for not filing a complaint in Pune. She was lured for the job by Tilocani’s brother, N. Sachdeva. The police can start the investigation with Sachdeva,” he said.

Sarode said though bonded labour has been abolished in India, this case clearly indicates that it still rampant. “The response from the police has been slow and insensitive.”

A complaint filed with the Las Palmas police in Spain, where Salunke had reached after escaping from Tilocani’s in-laws’ house, also alleges physical torture. An English translation of the complaint has termed Salunke as victim, providing an idea of her rights like representation by a lawyer, penal action against the accused even if the complainant does not use her rights and compensation for the injury.

Salunke was appointed as a baby-sitter, but asked to work as a house-maid. When she resisted, she was allegedly tortured and her passport and work permit were taken away by the accused. She returned…More
