TOI : PUNE: An artist’s sketch drawn on the basis of the description provided by a 14-year-old witness, helped the Pune rural police arrest a suspect, Lahu Pawar, who allegedly raped a seven-year-old girl from village Navhara in Shirur taluka near here.
The incident occurred last Saturday following which the rural police had launched an elaborate hunt for the suspected rapist. The investigators had little clue other than the suspect’s description provided by the victim’s 14-year-old brother, who had seen the suspect driving the girl and her two-and-a-half-year-old cousin on a moped.
Police said Lahu Pawar is a habitual offender in sex crimes. Prior to the latest case, Pawar was involved in two offences of rape and one of molestation, registered since 2002. On Monday, a court in Shirur sent Pawar to four days in police custody.
Investigations revealed that Pawar, who hails from village Rahu, also in Shirur taluka, had gone to Navhara on Saturday morning to meet a relative. Around 12 noon, Pawar approached the young victim at her house on the pretext of seeking drinking water, who was alone with her two-and-a-half-year-old cousin. Pawar asked the girl and her cousin to accompany him on his moped to the place where her parents work. The two kids joined him and soon Pawar drove them to a nearby canal.
Pawar took the girl to the canal and sexually assaulted her, police said. He then left the place, leaving the girl in an unconscious state. A passer-by saw the girl lying unconscious and raised an alarm.
The police then hired the services of artist Harish Charwad to draw the sketch of the suspect based on the description provided by the girl’s brother. During a search at Rahu by a police team, some people confirmed having seen the person in the sketch. Pawar was finally was nabbed on…More
