Minor at wheel ends another’s CYG dream

TOI : PUNE: The chances of a national-level cyclist to compete in the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) look bleak as his bicycle was hit by a speeding car, driven by a minor boy, at the Tata Motors officers’ colony in Pimpri on Saturday morning.

Such was the impact that Ronak Sunil Berman (14) was flung about 10 feet high.

He was rushed to a private hospital in Pimpri. Besides severe head injuries, Ronak has been left with a fractured collarbone, said doctors treating him at a private hospital in Pimpri.

The cyclist underwent an emergency surgery and was reportedly out of danger, but kept under observation.

Ronak, a resident of Sant Tukaramnagar, Pimpri, and his friend Sagar Jambhukar (15) were practising for the CYG when the car (MH 14 AE 9736), driven by Nayan Ashok Rathod, hit the bicycle from front. Nayan fled the scene with the car, but was later detained from his home. He has been booked under section 338 of the Indian Penal Code (endangering someone’s life).

Ronak is a class IX student of Vidyaniketan school, Pimpri. The boy’s father too is in hospital as he donated a kidney to his sister on Friday. Speaking to TOI, Chandrashekhar Bhise, maternal uncle of Ronak, claimed that the minor was driving the car along with three girls. “He was driving the vehicle at breakneck speed. I had gone to Dubai to buy Ronak a bicycle for the CYG event. We hope he recovers in time for the CYG,” he said. Print EMail DiscussNew B…More
