Pune can still expect zero power cuts

TOI : MUMBAI: Even though the state faces the prospect of additional power cuts to cope with increased demand, thanks to irregular rains, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune can still hope for zero load-shedding. Tata Power Trading Company Ltd (TPTCL), the firm buying costly electricity for these three cities since June 1, would have to get 150 MW more to avoid load-shedding.

MSEB officials said Navi Mumbai, Thane, Mulund, Bhandup and Pune have been getting 325 MW from outside the state at a high cost by paying an additional reliability charge of 35 paise, 43 paise and 48 paise per unit respectively. Now, Tata Power Trading Co would have to get another 150 MW from outside the state if these three cities are to continue with zero load-shedding despite overall shortage crossing 4,000 MW across Maharashtra.

Ajay Bhushan Pandey, managing director of MSEB’s distribution company ‘MahaVitaran’, speaking to TOI on Saturday said Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune would have to undergo an hour of load-shedding in case TPTCL cannot manage the extra 150 MW power. “If TPTCL gets only the originally contracted quantum of 325 MW, then an hour of load-shedding is compulsory. If extra electricity is available, these three cities would have uninterrupted power,” assured Pandey. Print EMail DiscussNew B…More

Now, MNS ransacks MIT office

TOI : PUNE: Playing the ‘Marathi’ card, members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) ransacked the office of Mangesh Karad, executive director of the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) group of institutes, here on Saturday.

Around 50 members of the MNVS entered the institute’s premises in Kothrud at around 11 am. They staged a protest and raised slogans against the pro-north Indian admission policy being implemented by the institute.

The mob then moved towards Karad’s office, intending to ‘adorn’ him with a garland of currency. Realising that he was not in the office, the mob turned violent. The office was ransacked with glass panes, furniture and other equipment bearing the brunt of the wrath. Following this, the miscreants fled the scene.

Roopali Patil, vice president of the city unit of the MNVS said, “The agitation was staged against the institute’s policy of giving preference to north Indian students for admissions to the management quota. Injustice is being done to Marathi students, who are being completely ignored by the institute. As a result, nearly 70 to 80 per cent of the total seats are being grabbed by north Indians.”

Moreover, Patil alleged the institute was violating norms as admissions were being granted on the basis of fake documents being produced by north Indian students. The institute was also collecting heavy donations from these students, she added.

Patil stated categorically that the MNVS would continue its agitation in the near future to ensure that city colleges gave priority to Marathis and kept the local students’ interests in mind.

Reacting to the incident, Rahul Karad, founder-dean, MIT School of Government, said the incident had come as a shock. “The admission procedures for all the courses run by the institute are being conducted within the rules and regulations laid by respective universities.”

He said, “The incident was unexpected. A couple…More
