Power thieves top Pimpri’s wanted list

TOI : PUNE: Lists of wanted criminals published by the police department usually comprises criminals wanted for murder, robbery, theft, extortion, etc. However, a recently published list of 181 criminals wanted in the jurisdiction of the Pimpri police station by the crime branch comprises as many as 114 criminals who are wanted in cases of power thefts!

Moreover, as the criminals are at large, the Pimpri police have got the highest number of names in the wanted listed with 181 criminals, including 114 suspects of power thefts. Majority of these power thieves hail from the notorious Bhatnagar and Ashoknagar slum pockets in Pimpri. While some cases of power theft date back to 2006, all the 114 booked criminals have simply vanished.

Senior police inspector Sharad Surve of the Pimpri police station told TOI that the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) had conducted a major anti-power theft drive targeting residents of Bhatnagar and Ashoknagar in 2006. “They used to steal power by tampering with the meters or tapping electricity directly from the transformers or overhead wires by putting up hooks,” he revealed.

The MSEDCL had confiscated over two truckloads of hooks and wires used by the residents. “In 2006, MSEDCL had filed more than 150 cases under section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003 with the Pimpri police,” Surve added. As per the provisions in the Electricity Act, many of the residents had paid compounding fee to regularise their connections and the cases against them were waived.

“Those who did not pay the compounding fee have been put in the wanted list. Our team conducted many raids, but all of them have simply vanished without a trace,” Surve said. Print EMail DiscussNew B…More
