TOI : PUNE: For seven years now, the Shankarrao Bhoi Smriti Praishthan has been felicitating police officers for the long hours they put in during the Ganesh festival.
This year, a felicitation programme has been organised on September 29. Twenty-two police officers, as well as a few fire brigade officials and lifeguards associated with the Pune Municipal Corporation, will be honoured during the programme.
“We organise this event in memory of police constables Balasaheb Gangurde and Ramesh Jagtap, who lost their lives during the riots in Bhiwandi three years ago,” Milind Bhoi, president of the organisation, said.
The families of the constables have been adopted by the organisation, which has been providing for them for the last three years. “Our aim is to honour the officers for the tiring work they do,” Bhoi added. tnn B…More

TOI : PUNE: In a bid to spread the message of environment conservation, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has come up with an audio compact disc to be distributed free in schools and among citizens in the twin township.
The CD, titled ‘Atatari Jagu Dya Zhadala’ (Let the tree live), has eight songs on various environmental themes, rendered by Bhagyashree Abhyankar, Asavari Godbole, Dattaprasad Ranade, Vitthal Chavan, Omkar Kelkar, and Pandit Raju Sawar, who has also composed the songs.
Sawar has so far released over 150 CDs on various topics related to social and environmental issues. “The songs are based on folk music and we hope people will appreciate then,” Sawar said.
The first song depicts the reality without trees while the second song compares a tree with a saint, and describes how a tree itself is a miracle on earth.
The third song is on the importance of mother earth, and the fourth is about the various benefits of a tree and how we get food, water and shelter from trees.
The remaining songs are about the land, its importance and about how people can live happily if the earth turns green with plants and trees.
“The corporation has planned to distribute the CDs free of cost to senior citizens, schools and colleges, women’s self-help groups, environmentalists and social organisations,” Sawar said. The CD was informally released by district guardian minister Ajit Pawar.
The idea of bringing out the CD was suggested by PCMC’s municipal officer of health K. Nagkumar. B…More

TOI : PUNE: The police have initiated action against those who have given their houses on rent without informing the local police station.
As many as 42 house owners were booked on Wednesday. Following series of bomb blasts last month, the police on August 11 had issued an order making it mandatory for the owners to submit complete information about their tenants with the nearest police station.
However, seeing poor response from the owners, the police initiated strict action on Wednesday.
Faraskhana police station in-charge inspector V.T. Pawar said they will get details regarding the house owners from the registrar’s office. “The house owners should understand the seriousness of the matter in current volatile situation,’’ Pawar said.
The action is taken under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
Meanwhile, the police also booked owners of 71 illegal stalls across the city. The action was undertaken after the commissionerate received complaints of eve-teasing at such stalls. B…More

TOI : PUNE: A year after Abdul Karim Telgi was sentenced to 13 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 251 crore by the special court here, the fake stamp paper scam kingpin has now decided to challenge the fine amount in the Bombay high court.
Former special judge Chitra Bhedi, who was presiding over the special court set up under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), had convicted 43 accused, including Telgi, after they had pleaded guilty on June 30, 2007.
The judge while sentencing Telgi under the relevant sections of MCOCA had slapped the fine — highest-ever imposed by any court in the history of the Indian judiciary. Telgi has instructed his lawyers to move the appropriate forum for reducing the fine amount.
Advocate Milind Pawar confirmed that he recently received instructions from Telgi, who is now presently lodged in a Bangalore jail.
Pawar said, “Telgi has decided to challenge the special court order because the other accused convicted along with him have escaped with lesser punishment and minor fines. For instance, the fines imposed on his accomplices range from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh, and a maximum Rs 5 lakh”.
He said, “Telgi feels that the judge has not specified any criteria or given any reasoning while imposing the whopping fine”.
According to Pawar, Telgi will not be in a position to pay the fine even if he decides to dispose of all the properties owned by him and his family members located at various places.
How can the court order be challenged after a year when Telgi had already pleaded guilty? Pawar said, “The conviction order cannot be challenged because his client had pleaded guilty. We will be only challenging the fine imposed on our client, which we feel is exorbitant and beyond anybody’s capacity to pay.”
