PCMC officials beat retreat as locals oppose STP project

TOI : PUNE: The officials of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had to beat a hasty retreat after a heated exchange of words with the locals, who were opposing the demarcation of land for a sewage treatment plant (STP) in Mamtanagar area of Sangvi on Wednesday.

The residents pointed out that as the PCMC has already constructed an STP at Survey no 6 in Sangvi, they bought land in Sr No 1 and 2 for constructing houses thinking that the new STP will not be built there. “The municipal corporation has provided water, electricity and roads in this area. The PCMC general body (GB) had also approved a resolution for cancelling the proposed STP project at Sangvi,” residents said.

They oppose the STP in the area saying that there is a temple, a mathh’ and a church in the vicinity of the proposed project site in Sr No 1 and 2 of Sangvi. Locals said that a Buddha vihar has also been proposed in the vicinity of the proposed site. “This site is also located near the confluence of Mula and Pavana rivers,” they added.

The residents later held a meeting on Thursday night and decided to intensify their agitation against the proposed STP.

Speaking to TOI on Thursday Prashant Shitole, local NCP corporator said that the PCMC had already built a 15 MLD capacity STP plant at Sangvi. “The civic body now wants to build another 25 MLD plant in Sangvi on some four acres of land. There are around 300 bungalows on this land,” he said, adding that the plant should be constructed some place else in Sangvi.

Clarifying the reason for demarcating land on Sr No 1 and 2, additional city engineer and head of water supply department Vishwas Gaikwad said, “Around 15 to 16 acres of land in Sr No 1 and 2 of Sangvi are reserved for…More

Colleges race to fill vacant posts before inspection

TOI : Pune: The office of the dean of B J Medical College is abuzz with activity as medical officers from various district hospitals are busy filling up forms for the posts of senior residents and tutors.

The haste is explainable as the appointment is almost instant; all an officer has to do is give his approval for a certain department. A simple yes’ to questions like Is anatomy department OK with you or do you want some other department?’ means that the officer will be walking out with his appointment letter in hand.

The reason for the appointment drive gaining so much momentum is quite simple: the institute needs to fill all the vacant posts to conceal the lack of teaching faculty, before a high-level inspection team from the Medical Council of India (MCI) visits the college anytime in the next few days.

“This is a notorious but an accepted exercise which is followed by all the medical colleges in the state. Since most of colleges are strapped of teaching resources, the colleges have to resort to such borrowing’ to avoid derecongnition from the MCI,” said a medical officer of Yerawada Mental Hospital, who had come to the college on deputation as a tutor.

Resenting the whole process of borrowing, another medical officer said “I found my name in the list of medical officers shortlisted for deputation at the college. There are a total of eight medical officers from the Yerawada Mental Hospital who have been appointed temporarily as senior residents or tutors. We feel like shuttles, being tossed from one side to the other,” said another medical officer on condition of anonymity.

“This is exactly what the state government is doing now move medical officers and teachers to colleges lacking the required strength and infrastructure until the inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI) is over,” said an…More
