City college student run over by truck
TOI : Pune: A 19-year-old student of Sinhagad college at Yevalewadi in Kondhwa was run over by a truck at Mohammedwadi on Wednesday morning, sparking tension in the area and leading to a traffic jam for about two hours.
Vikas Dayachand Pokharna of Satyaraj City at Kalepadal was going to college on a motorcycle, which skidded while he was trying to overtake the truck.
According to the Wanowrie police, Vikas fell from his motorcycle and came under the front wheel of the truck at 8.15 am. He died on the spot, the police said.
An irate mob soon gathered at the spot and started throwing stones at the truck before setting it ablaze. The mob, including angry residents of the area, blocked the road for over two hours.
Vikas was a first year commerce student at the college.
News of the incident spread like wildfire, and thousands of people rushed out of their homes and started pelting stones at the truck, forcing the driver to flee. The mob removed diesel from the tank of the truck, poured it on it and set it ablaze.
Officials from the Wanowrie and Hadapsar police stations rushed to the spot after a member of the public alerted the city control room.
Assistant commissioner of police Ramesh Biwal of Wanowrie division appealed to the public to maintain peace and warned them against creating law and order problem. The mob cleared the way for the traffic soon after the police promised action against the driver.
Sub-inspector Pushpalata Mandle of the Mohammedwadi police chowkey said Vikas’s head was crushed under the front wheel of the near lane No. 19 of the road. She said the truck, owned by Shivaji Dhamdhere, was towed to the chowkey.
