Security at civic establishments not up to mark

TOI : PUNE: Four unidentified people drove off with a call-centre cab after threatening the driver with a knife on the Pune-Mumbai highway on Thursday night.

The driver, Nemchandra Nandkishore Dhokne (26), a resident of Shinde Vasti, has filed a complaint with the Sangvi police.

Assistant police inspector Sarjerao Gawde, who is investigating the case, said Dhokne was returning home around 9 pm after dropping call-centre employees when a person on a bicycle signalled him to stop at a junction near Wakad phata. When Dhokne stopped, two persons who were hiding nearby came to the car and one of them started beating him. The two suspects got in while threatening Dhokne with a knife. The suspect on the cycle left the scene.

Soon, two others came on a motorcycle with the pillion rider covering the vehicle’s number-plate with his hands. The suspects in the car followed the motorcycle till Aundh Chest Hospital where Dhokne was let off.

Amid more vigil, steps to plug gaps

TOI : PUNE: Citing the drop in cane cultivation Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Friday predicted a sugar crisis next year.

Addressing the annual general body meeting of the Vasantdada Sugar Institute at Manjri, 20 km from here, Pawar said, “with the drop in cane production we might face sugar crisis.”

He added that India would be in position to export only 70,000 tonnes to 1 lakh tonnes of sugar. “There will not be a sugar shortage in the country and there will be enough buffer stock to last for three-four months.”

Pawar appealed to sugar mills to go for co-generation projects to be self sufficient.

Talking about the terror attack in Mumbai, Pawar commented that the attack was not only on Mumbai but on the whole nation.

“We should put a united face to the crisis and combat terrorism,” he stated.

TOI : PUNE: The crime branch on Friday arrested three suspects for allegedly robbing gold ornaments worth Rs 9.59 lakh from a courier near Hadapsar on November 11. Ornaments worth Rs 2.47 lakh were recovered from their possession.

The suspects were identified as Vijay Kamble (29), Sham Kamble (30) and Tukaram Kamble (31), all from Ramtekdi, Hadapsar. The crime branch team led by inspector Ram Pathare, constables Gautam More, Anil Kulkarni, Dhulaji Kolpe and Vijay Sawant nabbed the suspects. Their two accomplices are still at large.

According to Pathare, “Courier Champalal Jain (45) of Dongri, used to deliver gold ornaments manufactured in Mumbai to jewellers in Latur and Udgir . On November 10, he was carrying ornaments worth Rs 9.95 lakh for delivery. He took a state transport bus from Mumbai central to Panvel and caught from there came to Pune in a jeep. The jeep dropped him at Hadapsar around 2.30 am the next day.”

The police added that, “while he was waiting for a bus to Latur, the suspects came in a car and offered him lift till Udgir. However, they took him to Malwadi in Hadapsar and robbed him of the ornaments before fleeing.”

Pathare said: “Acting on a tip on Vijay Kamble, we laid a trap at Ramtekdi and nabbed him on Friday. We recovered ornaments worth Rs 62,000 from his possession.”

“During interrogation he revealed the names of his accomplices Sham and Tukaram. We arrested them and recovered ornaments worth Rs 1.85 lakh from their possession,” the police official added.

Pune police request for better weapons, technology pending

TOI : PUNE: As the terror attacks in Mumbai shook the country, the district administration disaster management cell has planned to include a modules on disasters and critical situations, such as bomb blasts and terror attacks, in their mock drills.

The drills are planned to be organised at over 50 places and more than 100 schools in the district, including the city.

The disaster management cell, as of now, has organised more than 304 mock drills at various places in the district. There are another 50 places on cards. From now on, all these drills will have a separate module on tackling emergency situations like bomb blasts and terror attacks. Some of these drills will be held at public places in city areas to offer a verisimilitude to a possible emergency.

In addition, the cell is also planning to conduct additional drills at the schools in the district. Nearly 100 schools are in the process to undergo the programme soon, which includes training, lectures on awareness about tackling a disaster situation, and selfprotection .

An official from the cell told TOI, “The drills are being conducted to spread awareness among the people about man-made calamities and disaster situations.

The programmes are being conducted in association with other departments , such as home guard, fire brigade, civil defence and district civil administration. The cell, so far, has conducted 304 programmes across the districts. We provide information of basic protection skills and precautionary measures.”

Speaking about the new module to be introduced soon, he said, “The modules will educate people about such situations and how to deal with such calamities. It will help reduce nuisance and spread of rumours. We are also taking the programme to schools for the first time.”

Another official added that the cell has designed a comprehensive programme called ‘SMS blaster’ . This programme, in an emergency situation , will send SMS…More
